Not very good. The tonal difference between this and the first issue of Absolute Power is night and day. This wouldn't be terrible if this weren't such a serious and gloomy event and this was a standalone story in the middle of some random DC title. But for what Williams is going for in this, it doesn't work. I'm glad this Task Force VII series is all a set of one-shot stories, so I'm hoping we're onto better things.

Fine, but really lacking in that Burton-verse feeling. It's a real joy to see Sam Hamm back to write a Bat-book, but it doesn't automatically imply it's great. Without Tim Burton at Hamm's side, I don't think the title will succeed, and reality is showing that right now, sadly.

The first two stories are hits. The Aquaman story, as much as I wanted to like it for the art alone, I just found it super forgettable. The black-and-white story at the end was just...basic. It doesn't do anything exciting. It's just dull and predictable. The art in the black-and-white story is fantastic in most parts, but there were panels where I had to look back, unsure of what was happening.

Absolutely spot on.

A great re-entry into the Long Halloween/Dark Victory/Haunted Knight universe. Thoroughly enjoyed the heavy focus on Julian Day and the subplot of Two-Face and Gilda (we all know her secret by now, though not necessarily touched upon in this) coming back together, and the underlying theme of two.
The art is reminiscent of the similar art style of Sale's glory days on The Long Halloween, though I feel Sale has degraded quite a bit with this one-shot. Some panels really seemed off, while some were just as elegantly drawn as ever. The writing is still sharp, to the point, and draws us back to Loeb's classic Batman masterpieces. Overall, a really solid one-shot that sends the reader on a nostalgia trip, among most aspects.

"I've lived a life built on someone else's fears. Forever running after someone else's greatness."
This was absolutely phenomenal, one of the best graphic novels I've read this year. The story works as both a psychological character deconstruction and a gripping mystery, along with the perfect blend of horror and unsettling visuals that elevate this book to incredible heights. Ram V's writing is rhythmically riveting and spellbinding; I often found myself reading dialogues over again and also being taken aback by the sheer impactfulness of heavy, short blurbs of dialogue. Anand RK's art style in this book specifically is unnerving, yet beautiful and unique. Much like Ram's writing, my eyes were glued to the page, glaring at the gorgeous and gritty visuals displayed.
This book absolutely rules. Must read.

Solid issue, and nothing much more than that. Wight Witch continues to fascinate me, and I'm looking forward to her story in Batman: Urban Legends soon. Inching closer to Ram V's exit on Catwoman surely disappoints me, but what really makes matters worse is the fact that he closing his run off with Fear State. I really hope to have a strong conclusion from him, without the Tynion fingerprints all over.

I really was conflicted trying to give a rating on this one. I feel like I'm settled on what I have now, though. The first issue breezes by and enthralls you into this medieval world. It does exactly what you'd think it would do just by looking at the cover, and it sticks the landing quite well. Looking forward to more in this title.

Yet another great entry into this miniseries that I REALLY wish should have been ongoing. Kyle Higgins is absolutely nailing this story, and every time an issue comes out, it's in the first three I pick up at the shop. Let's keep up this momentum for the next two.

Unfortunately, this series really fell off for me after issue 6. I really wanted to like the latter half of this title, but ultimately it fell flat. It seems like James Tynion either wrote or had a majority of control over the first arc, then gave it off to someone else, which obviously looks to be the case as Rosenberg also writes this.
Granted, I do enjoy Matthew Rosenberg as a writer, and I have found myself following a few titles of his that I genuinely enjoy. Unfortunately, DC vs. Vampires and Task Force Z were two duds, ironically both in their second arcs for me. The concepts were there, but the execution wasn't.

Both a fantastic main story and backup. Really digging the direction we're going in with Shadows of the Bat with Arkham being rebuilt, Nakano being at a crossroads in his beliefs toward Batman, all of it. One of the strongest DC titles, as it should, and it truly shows that good writing is what makes a strong story, not good art (looking right at you, Tynion and Jiminez).

Ladies and gentlemen, this is my pick of the month. Holy moly was this first issue incredible. Knocks you sideways with the heavy emotions, while still keeping your eyes moving with the vibrant, rough-edged action. I may just have to read this two more times before I put it in its sleeve. What a knock-out book.

I expected this rating to be this much. This, right here, is absolute perfection. When Tom King is put on something obscure, he absolutely RULES. Goes to show with this introductory issue. There were moments that actually made me laugh out loud, the writing never failed to keep me immersed in the storytelling at hand, and the art by Greg Smallwood is absolutely gorgeous. I dearly hope this book keeps the momentum it has currently because if it does, this will be Mister Miracle/Vision-level of a book.

A complete surprise to find out this existed, and it did not disappoint in the slightest. I mean, seriously... Chip Zdarsky writing a detective noir has my name all over it. Full of twists and turns, Chip's pitch-perfect dialogue, and a quick, intriguing backup story that works along with the main story, I can see myself absolutely adoring this title and also see it being right at the top of my pulls every month.

Hell. Yes. This was a phenomenal issue right here. Fantastic backstory, in the form of actual frames of the movie itself, perfectly blending with the current action going on. Unsettling, above most aspects of the issue, rich in development, and artistically brilliant in both art and writing, this is surely in my top five books of the year.

Very nice tie-in we have here from Tom Taylor. What I really enjoyed about this story is the actual use of the theme of fear. This is what I want Fear State to be about. That theme of 'What are our heroes' greatest fears?' that does, in concept, sound formulaic, but when fleshed out and spanning many different titles (Batman, Nightwing, Detective, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and the Secret Files one-shots), I think there can be a really psychological approach to the event, rather than just Scarecrow and an anti-vigilante army taking over Gotham to kill Batman. This issue really brought out the Nightwing/Batgirl relationship and showcased that fear theme very well.

Well, this was quite the letdown. At least this was one of the last of Bore State. Dull, uninspired writing, zero stakes, uninteresting, wonky art (when I was actually a fan of Robbi Rodriguez's two prior Nightwing issues), this really was a heartbreaker. Though the best thing, by far, to come out of this issue, the cliffhanger words saying, "Next: Back to Blüdhaven!"

Now that's how you end an arc as bombastic of a premise as this. I was really waiting for this second arc to make its mark, and lo and behold, after what felt like a not-as-impactful past few issues, it's finally done just that. Can't wait for arc three as things are about to get real wild.

Absolutely tragic, yet still hopeful in tone, this second issue of Primordial isn't as vague and strange compared to the first chapter, which I particularly enjoyed. The one thing that really stuck out to me was the lack of dialogue and mostly visual storytelling. Sorrentino's beautiful, trippy art amazes, while Lemire's focused and careful dialogue placement pulls heartstrings for Laika's character. Absolutely beautifully done second chapter.

An incredible debut solely focusing on the struggles of the rights of creators and how they're treated in the mainstream. Hilarious how Chip jabs at Marvel Studios specifically and their historical treatment of the characters' creators. Obviously, this was the book made in lieu of fairly recent controversy and I'm absolutely here for it.

Now, this was a hell of a surprise. I absolutely ADORED this first issue. Its satirical element is absolutely perfect (one of the only times I've ever extensively laughed out loud while reading a comic), the art is well done, but the cover is absolutely fantastic. I'm not one to praise covers much, but my goodness, I love it. Truly, a phenomenal book that deserves so much more attention.

The ideas here are really profound and fantastic, and so is the art, but the huge downside is how overly verbose Kudranski's narration and dialogue are. It's unfortunate because there's something really great here, but he's boggling it down with uninspired wording that turns out to bore the reader.

Fun start! Surely this story won't be for everyone, and that's okay. I really enjoyed what Mosley is going for with this, and I hope the same energy pulls throughout. P.S., Tom Reilly's art RULES here.

Interesting start! I do feel as though a point needs to get across for it to really stick with me, but I'm enjoying this one so far.

I had fun with this one. Donny's blockbuster story is rightfully loud as can be, the second tale was very solid, and the Norse mythology story at the end was a strange addition, but it was a fun little read.

I think by issue #12 I'll be off of this title. The first six issues were phenomenal; since then, it's been a dip in quality. I love Jorge Corona's art in this, but I do think that DWJ's writing in this second half of his run is nowhere near the heights of his first six issues.

Nothing very substantial happens in this issue, which I appreciated, but for the price you pay on a prestigious title such as this, you'd want something to definitely happen here.

This was fun! I went into this book with extremely low expectations, given the writer's history on Future State: Gotham, which I was lukewarm about, and came out enjoying it. I don't think it's a perfect read, but it's a fun one nonetheless. Of course, this is only judging by the first issue, but I'm cautiously anticipating the next issue.

As per usual, anything by Ram V is just so freaking good, in my opinion. Venom is absolutely no different! Al and Ram craft a really intriguing hell of a first issue and an incredible start to the first arc of what should be an amazing title. Hitch's art really delivers, especially in the splash pages, which look so cinematic, yet classic to the comic book-y look. This title is going to be just fantastic.

Incredibly well told, super fascinating, and a pure breeze of a read. I've always been pretty okay with Matthew Rosenberg's books, but this may just be one of his best books right here. I absolutely cannot wait for more on this book.

After waiting quite a while for the Krakoan era of X-Men to run its course, I decided to give this a shot, and I'm glad I did. I liked the more character-driven route that went with this first issue as the scene is being set for this new (and simpler) status quo. I think the slower pace and tone setting was just what this book needed after a 5-year storytelling initiative. Stegman's art is very good, although Beast does look a little odd. I'm looking forward to seeing more from this new era!
