You Don't Read Comics - David Harth

Pepose, Majado, Delgado, and Petit drop an excellent found footage horror story that works so well because of Marvel additions like the Hulk and the Mole Man. I feel like it shouldn't be a shock to say that found footage doesn't really work in the medium of comics. I mean, the artist probably had fun drawing all those angles you rarely see in comics, but aside from that, it didn't really work. The sneak peak of PKJ's run looked fun. This wasn't bad for what it is. The found footage approach to this title is certainly an interesting idea, but it doesn't translate that well to this medium. There are certain parts of this issue that would just be better if it was actually found footage and not in a book. As for the story, it was a fine gap between the last Hulk run and the new one coming out next month. Speaking of which, the epilogue was intriguing and definitely peaks my interest going into this new horror-based series.

Though I admire the creators' utter commitment to their "Blair Hulk Project" format, it does make it difficult for them to dig deep into their characters or themes. They execute their premise with significant skill--and fail to say anything particularly novel or profound while they do. There is a little world-building going on, much of it (I assume) pointed toward the next volume. I don't like most of these ideas at first glance--Giganto with a gamma connection? Gamma fracking? Gamma fluid (what even is that)? But on the other hand, I really like the idea of Viridian, the gamma ghost town.

The found footage portion of the issue didn't really work for me as it's a gimmick that works a little better on film than on paper. The small peak we got of PKJ's upcoming run was really promising though. You can see some of Mignola's Hellboy influence coming through, which was one of the inspirations PKJ has mentioned in his interviews, and that was really exciting.

It was pretty boring and feels pointless. It's also so damn weird these people are reacting to any Hulk records like this... I recall he conquered New York in his WWH story not that long ago... He isn't some mysterious thing that's hard to find. This "camera" distortion thing also ruined lots of great splash-pages, you know... Not like the art is that cool here, but still, such a waste... It feels like something straight from early 2000's. The art is also more common for some Marvel Adventures/Marvel Age books. Not needed now in 2023 at all. Especially after 2 great runs, probably ones of the best in Hulk's history overall. The new TIH series preview-epilogue was kinda meh too. I already glanced through some issues of that series and more
