I gained a lot of clarity after reading Detective Comics #1053. It took weekly stories (that frequently have a lot going on from start to finish) to us remember what we were reading, what we know, and how cool both these tales are. I highly recommend this issue! Read Full Review

DC Comics News - Matthew Lloyd

As "Shadows of the Bat" is just over the midway point, it's clear that it's a series that has increased in complexity while never losing sight of the importance of the relationships of the characters be it the Party Crashers or the Bat-family. It's a series that's playing the long game and it's working extremely well. Read Full Review

    COMICON - Scott Redmond

Detective Comics' main and backup stories both perfectly work to ramp up the tension as the moments where the characters are close to reaching breaking points or making big choices move closer and closer to reality. Every bit of these stories feels important and emotional and real with such depth on all levels. The art teams are bringing their A-game every time and knocking it out of the park. Read Full Review

This is a setup issue through and through. While that is not the end of the world, until the final few pages we get very few new developments. Dr. Wear is in over his head and the Party Crashers are trouble; that is not news. For the second week in a row, Tamaki has to spread her storyline thin to continue towards the 12-issue finish line. If the plot continues to drag much longer, she'll have to do plenty of heavy lifting to get fans reinvested for the eventual payoff. Read Full Review

While I liked Detective Comics #1053 more than the last few issues, mainly because Nightwing gets something to do, the pacing and inconsistencies from issue to issue are still a huge problem.  Maybe by the end, I'll be able to recommend this story in trade, but I can't as a weekly release. Batman-News - Casper Rudolph

    Feb 15, 2022

Once again, only the bare minimum in plot progression is achieved in this issue's main story. This is a very simple, straight-forward story with an unnecessarily convoluted execution. It's not entertaining. It's not intriguing. The only good stuff here is the backup, but even that good backup can't save this mess. You deserve better. Read Full Review

Very good number. Action, a little investigation and the threads of the plot that connect. I can't wait for the action to be concentrated only in the establishment because that's what we want: to see events rush into this new Arkham. How will Huntress act? How will Nightwing escape the manipulator, what will Dr. Wear do? and the patients? I definitely like this weekly format. Can't wait for the sequel

Poor Dr. Wear. When everyone wants a piece of the action your own sneaky plans just don't go as planned. Psycho Pirate isn't exactly the most reliable or competent of mind manipulators. He's always been more second rate among DC's supervillain population. So it's no surprise he can't keep things under control, and Dr. Wear only brought it on himself for relying on him. The "House of Gotham" saga is also progressing well. Bane sees something in this youth as well. He may believe he could one day be the one to destroy Batman if he can't.

We actually saw Nightwing doing some detective work and investigating, which is a huge plus, but too many pages are used for exposition until something really happens.

Nightwing gets a glimpse of attention here but he'll probably need rescuing the next issue from Huntress or Batwoman, don't worry about it, he's not supposed to be important. The first story is decent but the second one shines again. If that kid is Nero, as some fans have started guessing, I do understand how he could have lost his mind like that. The concept is interesting, let's see what happens if a kid just has the bad luck to spend some time with every lunatic in Gotham, he'll probably grow up to be an upstanding citizen.

Imagine reading a comic full of a whole cast of characters, one of which is a woman who has been frequently abused by the story beats (Huntress) and getting ass-mad that one character doesn't have enough to do because *obviously* the writer hates men. Merlyn is having a real one. This issue is better than last but we really need to pick up the pace here. I'm so sick of Dr. Wear's scheming and this fucking Arkham Tower. Dr. Wear could be a very fun, slimy villain but he's just boring. I just want this title to move on, fuck the resolution. The backup is the main reason to read this book. It's really well done. Rosenberg knows how to write, and apparently, knows how to pace a lot better than the main team does.

I'm too lazy to look back and see who wrote "why is this weekly?!" but they are absolutely right. The pacing of this book does not dictate weekly issues. It's boring. I thought the fake Harley Quinn jab was funny: "That doesn't even look like her!" Lol Amen.
