Batgirls #1
December 14, 2021

This is a book that has some growing pains, but is ultimately a fun experience that promises a lot, and I think it's gonna deliver. I look forward to see how this team irons things out as months go by, and I can't wait to see this come into it's own. As a longstanding fan of these characters, it gets a pass from me. Good work.

This issue has some problems with exposition dumping right up front, but is still a fun ride you can read for a quick superhero sitcom adventure with some stellar artwork to really bring it home.

A book that feels both fresh and nostalgic, not just for the cartoon it's succeeding, but also for the modern Batman tales it's bringing into its legacy.

A good conclusion to the previous story with character development for the supporting cast. Tamaki continues to show her strong understanding of Batman's core appeal as a character with some great artwork and a solid backup story as a bonus.

A great start that hits the ground running, sucking you into the panic of the moment and giving you little time to sit and contemplate what just happened -- in a good way!

A good issue that really puts the "detective" back into "Detective Comics", even if we as readers already know the answers, helping build anticipation.

In the end, this was a good final issue, to a fun story, but boy, am I glad that it's over. It was fun, but it's definitely time to move on to something new, and that Riddler tease at the end really got me excited for a change of pace. But as it stands, "Shadows of the Bat" was a fun romp that showed you don't need Batman around to tell a fun Batman story, but he's certainly never unwelcome to show back up and help with the cleanup. It had some good intrigue, good art, fun character writing... just overall, pretty darn good I'd say.

Radiant Black #3 |

Radiant Black continues to be a book that's got my interest piqued. Indie superhero stories are a dime a dozen, and it's not easy to stand out in such a sea of talented creators putting their own spin on the genre. But what Higgins and Costa really manage to do is grab you, and make this world feel fresh and exciting. I can't wait for more to come.

You can tell the creative team wanted this issue in particular to feel like you were playing a level right out of the games, with great action and thrilling artwork all throughout. These are people who know what they're working with, and run (ha) with it. This issue is fully dedicated to the thrill ride, and I can't think of anything more Sonic than that.

The book zigs where it set up a zag, and sidesteps a potentially more interesting premise or internal conflict for the arc's central character. What's there works on the surface, but could easily be so much more.

An issue that hits the ground running and never stops. Confirming an openly bisexual character alone is enough to give it praise, but it goes above and beyond from there to really make it feel like we can only go up from here.

Transformers: Halloween Special #1
September 29, 2021
|
|
Transformers: Halloween Special isbrief but well characterized, and offers a unique little story where you can just explore a character and watch them go on a bite-sized journey. I actually miss when comics did things like this more often, and in the primary titles at that. It's not the first thing I think of when Halloween comes to mind, sure, but you can't say it isn't unique, and very Transformers.
