"His hold is breaking!" That's the message written in blood across the minds of Arkham Tower's inhabitants, after a nightmare melee is unleashed! With Gotham's deadliest criminals reverting to their former, murderous selves in one horrific night, Dr. Wear has a lot of explaining to do...and a lot of covering up to perform. Can Nightwing get to the bottom of this mystery before the people of Arkham Tower are put in peril again? DC Comics News - Matthew Lloyd

    Feb 08, 2022

Detective Comics #1052 continues to build, utilizing character and an engaging dynamic for the Bat-family told in a unique narrative style. Both "Shadows of the Bat" and "House of Gotham" hit with surprises to keep the plot rolling. With the Penguin making appearances in both storylines, one can't help but wonder if Cobblepot will end up being the lynchpin to tie them together. Read Full Review

Artist Fernando Blanco elicits convincing emotion out of the characters as the intensity heats up. Jordie Bellaire's color work continues to be flawless especially on the final few pages cast in mostly red. House of Gotham has overtaken The Tower as the stronger of the two stories, but it's a win for Detective Comics readers given the quality of both stories now. Read Full Review

Aside from a few scenes, this story hasn't gotten most of its excitement from traditional Gotham action. Instead, it's a slow-burn mystery relying on psychological horror and great visuals, like the one we see in this issue's cliffhanger. Read Full Review

We're at the halfway point now, and I hope the Family saves the day and doesn't need to be bailed out by Batman's return, as DC loves to rewind the clock. Let Bats be a global hero. Leave Gotham for Batwoman and the Fam. Read Full Review

    COMICON - Scott Redmond

Detective Comics is the perfect place to truly explore the whole of the Bat-family and Gotham itself, and Shadows of the Bat has shown that fantastically. There is a fun but dark energy through this book but its ensemble nature and shuffling character spotlight help to make this one of the best runs of this book. Read Full Review

Mariko Tamaki has made the most of the Dark Knight's absence from Detective Comics since issue Batman #118, crafting a can't-miss story starring his extended cast. This issue does not do much more than move the story of The Tower forward, but the talent of its creators, the story that has led up to it, and the promise of things to come make it a must-read all the same. The Batman Universe - Ian Miller

Shadows of the Bat reaches its midpoint with the chaos of the opening just about to break loose, as Psycho Pirate and Dr. Wear's confrontation with the villains they have mind-controlled for weeks looms ever closer, and the Bat-Family closes in. Mariko Tamaki, Max Raynor, Matthew Rosenberg, and Fernando Blanco provide another really excellent package for weekly buyers of Detective Comics this issue. Read Full Review

    Weird Science - Jim Werner

    Feb 08, 2022

Detective Comics #1052 recaps a large portion of the last issue and tries to make up for it by forcing the overall story forward with a brunch of nonsense.  But, unfortunately, Mariko Tamaki doesn't seem to want to let the Bat-Family do their own work, so (convoluted) clues are just handed to them, and away we go.  I'm left wondering why this needed to be a weekly story or anything at all. Seriously. Don't bother with this. The only good content in this issue is "House of Gotham," but I don't think it's worth paying all this money just for the backup story. You deserve better, and there certainly are much better (and cheaper) comics on stands this week. Read Full Review

So far the Tower saga is keeping my interest. It would be more fun if Batman were here, but Batman comics these days are like Anime shows. The others do all the work till all seems lost, then the main hero shows up to save the day. Still, I'd give the story 7 so far. It's holding together better than the usual extra long saga. Then again being weekly helps too. If this was monthly we'd have enough halfway through, no matter what. Writers really need to get that and shorten their stories some. The Backup story on the other hand seems to be the most exciting part, and it seems the other reviewers tend to agree. It reminds me of the mini-series "Turning points" that highlighted certain times in Batman's relationship with Jim Gordon. Here we more

Backup is better than the main story I think. Like how the plots are moved forward. But remember this is an ongoing series on a weekly basis and the price might not be completely worth it.

It was an okay issue, but while the solicitations suggest that Nightwing is investigating a mystery in this issue, he was completely sidelined and didn't do a thing in this issue.

It is not the first time that the backup story is better than the main one, many hits, no content. However, the second story is good, Rosenberg expresses on the last page what many of us think about Batman and his child soldiers, nothing far from the infant recruiters, well, if I know, the excuse here is that at least He gives them shelter and decent food, it cannot be said that he does not train them to break karma, however the purpose is to protect the citizen.

Ah, I got a little bored with this problem which I found redundant compared to the previous one. It lacked 'juice'. Not essential to see in detail all the brainstormings of the Bat family. Or the point of view of the psychiatrist. It is a weekly by a monthly. You have to support the ryhtme with each time of action and suspense but not of "standing still". Small 7 therefore. In addition, there were not enough neither Huntress nor Nightwing. Outside they are the ones who are in the belly of the beast no? it is they that we must see act!

The first story was filler and really did nothing that we already hadn't seen or read in the last issue. The score is markedly increased due to the second story. The second story was very well written and had a nice gut puncher of an ending.

It's not bad, however we're halfway there and nothing is going on. Plus, Nightwing barely shows up.

To all the people complaining that Nightwing isn't having a bigger role: you're reading a book written by a declared feminist, if you thought Nightwing was going to be the main character, it's honestly just your fault. Just demand better in the future from the writers if you're bothered by it. The first story is bad. The second one is very good. That kid is just having one bad luck after another. Jason really screwed him up here just by listening to Elliot's lies. Now I have one problem with the story: Hush is the same age as Batman, so Elliot being the same age as Jason just can't be possible. I really like the story, it's very good but I just can't ignore that continuity error.

PSA: Feminism isn't misandry. Only a misogynist like Merlyn would think that. This comic feels like wheel spinning. The idea of a 12 issue weekly run quickly loses its luster when some issues are basically just filler like this one. The only thing holding this one up is the backup, which is markedly better this time around.
