May 05, 2021Pichetshote and Tefenkgi have crafted a smart and tightly-paced Chinatown noir that takes on the model minority theory head-on. In The Good Asian,actual working class Asian Americans are featured, and it isn't exactly glamorous. Tefenkgi's pencils are a surprising fit for this gritty 1930s noir tale, and Loughridge's use of colors makes each section of the story pop. The Good Asian is an evocative title, and, thankfully, it delivers. And like any good mystery, itkeeps you on your toes and eagerly flipping pages. It has an authenticity about it that feels like it props up its main story. It's a hard comic to read at times with the racism thrown around, but that adds to the authenticity. Nothing much is given about the main plot(only pieces of it) but the events and atmosphere sets up for something dark and intriguing.

This isn't Charlie Chan, but it borrows alot from it's noir predecessor. Still, "The Good Asian" separates itself as it combs through the effects of code switching, interment camps, and even a dead body that would make Ennis blush gets thrown in there too. It had times that felt like you missed something but, by the end it all makes sense of whats going on and its actually pretty solid. I live noir stuff so it has that going for it and the art really fits the story. I do think this could turn out to be a really good series.

Right Now, we don't know much about the plot, but it can evolve into something great. Good astmosphere. Good social commentary. One of the highlights is the deduction thing going on, reminds me of Sherlock. The art could have been way better, it's not beautiful, at all. And the colours are as bland and lame as they could be.
