Captain America #9

Is Captain America #9 a must-read? This issue is a solid start to a new arc, packed with suspense and raising interesting questions. However, the introduction of the penguin throws a curveball that might not sit well with everyone. If youre looking for a classic Captain America slugfest, this might not be it. The pacing of this issue was a the biggest problem for me. There was some heavy dialogue involving lore dumps that were interesting, but seemed to bog down the story. Steve Rodgers is so interesting in this though. He tries his best to relate to the residents of The Front Door, but he just comes off like the weird one and it's a lot fun. Skinz was a fantastic addition to group of mutants with some wild abilities, and the penguin in the desert was a very surprising part of the story. Read Full Review

Captain America is weird, surreal, and dull. You'd think a Cap adventure that puts him in the middle of a war between Life and Death would be more energetic, but Straczynski is overly focused on dialog with hidden meanings, strange plot occurrences, and subdued pacing. Read Full Review

Plot Lyra gives Steve Rogers a list of possible candidates to protect the Front Door Cabaret, the first is named Carlos Alvarex Garcia and is trapped in South America because his power messed with a tyrannical government. Along the way Steve finds a penguin in the desert...mysterious and it seems to be waiting for him. Carlos calls himself SKINZ, his power consists of releasing a toxin that allows him to separate his skin and release toxins that make him regenerate and create new skin that in turn serves to shed himself, it is an impressive power. Captain America and Skinz fight together in an amazing action sequence! This second story arc continues with a paranormal story that seems to surpass Steve's physical abilities, so he needs a team with powers to match the situation. Art It is a hyperrealistic art that will leave you stunned. Body language successfully expresses emotions and situations. Summary Steve recruits Skinz, a powerful mutant perfect for Lyra's army. more

This heads back in some sort of direction but still a weird direction for a Cap story. Jesus Saiz helps a lot in delivering some nice art to help the story hit the notes Straczynski is going for but this is way off for me still.
