In the post-Crisis era Luthor was Metropolis's big hero till Superman arrived. That's why he resented Superman so much in that continuity.. It seems they're going back to that kind of root in their rivalry which has been unused since Infinite Crisis reshaped their history. Frankly I enjoy seeing Luthor the businessman again rather than Luthor the mad scientist or wannabe Supervillain. He's more resourceful and dangerous that way-even when in jail.

The Comicbook Dispatch - StoryBabbler
May 17, 2023Superman #4 kicks off a new story as Silver Banshee gets roped into the schemes of Dr. Pharm and Graft to combat the Man of Steel. The story and writing by Joshua Williamson continues to be great, particularly with the handling of Superman and Lex Luthor's new dynamic with each other which has a give and take nature to it. Jamal Campbell's art is just as great whether it's illustrating Silver Banshee and her new powers or just Superman, Luthor, and the rest of Metropolis. One downside is that the fight between Superman and Silver Banshee is pretty short. However, the comic does provide a spicy reveal that I'm confident the creative team can handle and expand on in the next issue. Read Full Review

Supergirl Comic Box Commentary - Anj
May 22, 2023I like the cliffhanger. Jimmy knows Siobhan was the Banshee and he loves her. Nice they have an honest relationship with no secrets! Whew! Even though the issue felt like a quick read, there is a lot to digest there. Lex's dreams and the timing of the Pharm/Graft revenge are things I still want to learn more about. But overall, this was a meaty, fun, and beautiful issue. Read Full Review

The Fandom Post - Chris Beveridge
Jun 12, 2024There's a lot to like in this issue overall though some of the core things that bother me are still here. We do get a bit more breathing space when it comes to Lex and Superman which is a plus but there's a death of quality Clark time. Perhaps that happens more in a different title. I do like what we get of Lex and Superman but I was more intrigued by Silver Banshee's home life, the reveal at the end, and the truth of what Lex's first days in Metropolis are like. Most villains see themselves as the hero and there's likely some truth to what happened but you get the sense that it's a lot darker than what we got. It is, at least, an interesting way to re-introduce the purple and green designs in a pre-Superman era. Not that I pay much mind to timelines and continuity anymore. Read Full Review

Major Spoilers - Jonathan Cadotte
May 20, 2023Superman #4 spends too much time beating the dead horse that Superman doesn't really trust Lex, and Lex is not being truthful. Not much happens in this issue, which makes the irritating tone that much worse. Read Full Review

I love this book. In some ways, it reminds me of All-Star Superman and the modern age segments of Supreme (particularly the Chris Sprouse illustrated stories). It takes the most fantastical elements of Silver Age Superman and somehow makes them not-goofy. Also, the retcon of Luthor as a Pre-Supes Science Hero was great. I used to think Johns was the master of the retcon but Williamson is not only taking what's old and making it feel new again... he's making it feel batshit. And I dig it. Superman is the flagship Dawn of DC book, hands-down.

Another great issue. Last page is a bit of a shock (you might like it or hate it), but this still feels real fresh, like the plot and the direction it is going. Still has me excited every week it comes out.

This continues to be a great run, especially the Superman/Luthor dynamic. Great art from Campbell and a nice flashback segment from Nick Dragotta, too. This has become one of the books I most look forward to every month.

Funniest part of this comic is Lex Luthor flicking an almond into a prisoner's mouth because he's talking shit about how Superman is lame and has nothing on Batman. I liked this little detail because even though this is Lex Luthor and Superman has been his enemy forever, hearing Superman being called nothing is also a hit on Lex's ego. If Superman is lame what would that make his enemy? Besides that the story progresses more, Supes and Lex catch up and we learn that once Lex tried to do some good things on the streets of Metropolis when he was young. This is how he ran into the new villains of this series Graft and Pharm, but we don't really learn yet on why these guys got a bone to pick with Lex. I mean yeah he interrupted their operat more

The dynamics between Clark and Lex are perfect here, this element of Lex trying to be a hero in the past only adds to his jealousy of Superman too, great stuff

Possibly my favorite part of this issue is Clark and Lex's conversation about Lex trying to be a hero in the past. As Most pointed out in their review, Lex's previous attempt(s) at being a superhero only adds to his jealousy of Clark. Campbell's art is, once again, awesome here. Plus, Dragotta's art during the flashback is nice as well. The last time I read something with his art was Issue 10 of Zeb Wells's current Amazing Spider-Man series, and I wasn't the biggest fan of it there. Here, I think it works a lot better. Overall, this series continues to provide an interesting story along with great art.

The lex's past pages are bad, eighty years of superman comics and NO ONE in metropolis have said that Lex was a hero before superman? And the last page is weird. Beside that, I liked the rest of the issue.

The plot and dynamics between Lex and Supes are great. The backstory Lex tells not so much. Now I get Lex could be lying but if not it's really just out there. I like that Williamson goes for it though. It doesn't drag the book down but in the end it is rather a miss. Overall though it's nice to have a good Superman title.

My biggest problem with this book is its price. $4.99 for 22 pages is extremely steep and though the book might be decent, it's not great. We start out with the wheelchair prof turning Silver Banshee into her old self. Battle with Superman ensues and Jimmy Olsen jumps into the middle proclaiming his love. This is interesting, but is it enough to keep me coming back at $5.00? If DC wants everyone to get back into Superman, then they should be lowering the price not inflating it.
