Absolute Batman Annual: 2025
October 29, 2025

Absolute Batman 2025 Annual #1 is made up of three separate stories, though the third one is more of a fun companion piece to the other two. The first story is from the ever-talented team of Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Clayton Cowles, and while I was incredibly hyped for what this team could do on something like Absolute Batman, they surpassed every expectation and left me with a final few pages that I won't forget anytime soon.

When things do hit the fan, the action is stunning, with even this early version of Superman looking like a powerhouse. Despite that, he's all too human, once again showcasing the core of who Superman has always been. This version is perhaps even more so in some regards, and as the issue closes with some of the most powerful moments, there's also a welcome bit of intrigue thrown into the pot, teasing more powerful moments to come.

There's a genuine weight on Kal's shoulders that comes through the page, and amid all the grey is someone who just wants to help people. It's a compelling conflict that doesn't have any easy answers, and as we see in this issue in particular, it's incredibly easy to lose hope. At the center of it is a man who simply refuses to, and hopefully those who need him most will finally stop pushing him away. This is all part of what makes Absolute Superman one of the best in the comics, and Absolute Superman #9 is no exception.

Granted, I would have loved a bit more Cassandra in this story, as I just adore the character, and it is her book after all. That said, this still feels incredibly important to the previous arc that set a new understanding for Cassandra about who her mother really is, and as that looks to be a continuing part of the series, this all feels important and worthwhile as well. I didn't necessarily expect to be as captivated by The Book of Shiva as I was, but I'm glad to be wrong about that assumption, and I'm pretty much completely invested from here on out.

While the larger plot still has yet to unfold, the series has set a stellar foundation while also picking up the various pieces from previous runs. It's certainly a visual tour de force, but it also presents a more reltable and vulnerable Batman without losing the hallmarks of the character, all wrapped up in an issue that serves as the perfect starting point for lapsed or new fans. Simply put, Batman #1 knocks it out of the park, and this era is off to a truly grand start.

Now, while this issue is excellent unto itself, it's also setting up a much bigger story, and the seeds of that story are compelling. Unfortunately, there's only a page and a half of that to cling onto, so while the setup is great, it won't be until issue #2 that this story truly kicks into gear. Even with that caveat, the issue is entertaining unto itself, and how it sets up Grodd to be a major figure in this crossover is critical, so it's still a big win and an easy recommendation.

At times certain characters, namely Cyclops and War Machine, look just a little off, but otherwise, the artwork is solid and especially stellar when a fight kicks into gear. I couldn't be more excited to see where this goes, and it's a perfect time for a Captain Marvel and X-Men adventure.

One of the biggest changes in Captain Marvel's new series is the comic book's supporting cast, and it's always a bit dicey to switch up something that works to try something untested. The premise of DC K.O. is, on the surface, structured more like a typical comics event, but Scott Snyder effortlessly weaves in meaningful tethers to the Absolute Universe that automatically make this feel far more important. DC K.O.: Green Lantern Galactic Slam
January 21, 2026

The team of Jeremy Adams, Cian Tormey, Pat Boutin, Romulo Fajardo Jr, and Buddy Beaudoin has created something absurdly fun with Green Lantern Galactic Slam, and while it's largely self-contained, I'm hopeful this leads to even more adventures with the duo at the center of it. That would be Kyle Rayner and the baddest wrestler on the planet, Omega-Bam-Man, with the latter making his debut in an earlier adventure with The Flash. That said, this adventure ramps things up to 11 with a story of twists and turns that also never forgets not to take itself so seriously, and that tongue-in-cheek nature is what puts it over the top.

Videos by ComicBook.comThis issue benefits from timing, as towards the beginning, we get the thrilling final fight between Batman and Grayson's Batman before segueing to the confrontation between Batman and Jason Todd's Batman. The reds, blacks, and greys of the Red Hood's world are a stark contrast to the cool blues, pinks, and greens of Grayson's world, and it keeps things visually fresh and conveys a real sense of isolation that plays a major part in Todd's story.

One of my favorite aspects of the issue is a conversation that dives into assumptions made about a power switch and the unfortunate realities of why it's not as easy to deal with as it might seem. Then there's a wild twist at the end that changes up your perspective on a key character and how the story will revolve around them moving forward, once again shaking up any preconceived notions of what this series will ultimately be. That's a hallmark of the Massive-Verse, Power Rangers, and Superman as well, so it shouldn't really be a surprise that it works so well here as well. If you're looking for something that captures the imagination and mixes in concepts from some of your favorite franchises, look no further than Immortal Legend Batman.

Iron Man #1 |

Iron Man wastes no time in establishing its premise, and it reverberates throughout the rest of the issue in compelling ways. While A.I.M. has targeted Tony Stark at various times over the years, Madame Masque's leadership brings a different perspective, and she shifts their goalposts from copying Stark's inventions to finding a Stark to call their own. It's a pivot from simply trying to catch up and react to proactively finding someone who can innovate and set the standard for decades, and for an organization like A.I.M., it makes all the sense in the world. Those sorts of meaningful character shifts are what make Williamson's Superman run so rewarding over time, and that's already starting to happen with Iron Man in the very first issue.

Darkest Hour #1
July 31, 2024
|
|
After an 8-year journey that set a quite high bar for what Power Rangers could be and the stories it could tell, it's finally time to bring that larger-than-life saga to an end. That conclusion occurs in the much anticipated Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1, and it was never going to be easy landing this eight-year flight in a truly satisfying way. That said, the team of Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, Ed Dukeshire, and editors Allyson Gronowitz and Kenzie Rzonca managed to somehow make that happen while also delivering a few unexpected moments that will undoubtedly stay with you, especially if you've been here since the beginning.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #103
December 21, 2022

The Rangers find themselves in a whirlwind of change, and while returning foes and powerful new ones are certainly putting them on their heels, the most captivating battles are happening amongst themselves. That's where Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has always shined brightest, and writer Melissa Flores continues that tradition here, exploring the fractures that have started developing within the team but also within how the team views Zordon's overall approach.

That's why it might be easy to assume that there's not as much left to explore with the character, but Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #104 wastes no time in putting that theory to bed.

I won't call it filler because I did enjoy aspects of the issue, especially Peter and Silk's relationship, and the artwork by Mark Bagley, Edgar Delgado, John Dell, and Joe Caramagna is perfect for the spin on this vintage adventure. As part five of an ongoing story though, the fact that there's so little movement is disappointing.

Dan Slott and Mark Bagley's Spider-Man has succeeded in capturing the tone of a classic Spider-Man adventure, with the artwork dialogue, and premise coming together beautifully at times. There are other times however where the book's tone and dialogue shift from classic to dated, and while Spider-Man #9 has plenty of stellar moments, the ever shifting balance of those two tones can't help but take you out of the story.

There's a lot going on in the world of Sympathy For No Devils, and that can be a double-edged sword. When the dysfunctional friendship of Winston and Raleigh is front and center, the book shines, and thankfully there's quite a bit of that dynamic on display in issue #4.

Videos by ComicBook.comOne of the earliest standout elements of this grand collision is how well the two franchises fit together from a lore and mythology perspective, which is a credit to writer Tim Seeley. Seeley quickly establishes a premise for this collision that reaches back into the Turtles franchise lore in a way that feels like it fits into an open pocket of time rather than trying to reconstruct history. Two pages in, and you've got yourself the foundation on which everything else is built, and the speed of that establishment is quite impressive.

At times the lyrics felt a bit out of place, though at other points they did help to establish mood and tone and even enhance them. I understood why they were there, but if they weren't, I'm not sure if I would have missed them. More often than not though they didn't really detract from how immersed I was in Michael's tale of loneliness, fear, anger, displacement, and ultimately hope, so if you're looking for something unlike anything else out there, you've come to the right place.

It's not that the critical parts of this story won't be important, but between the redundancy of the dialogue and the lack of tangible connection to what's happening later, those parts of the story just aren't connecting like they should.
