I'm not much of a Skrull or Kree fan, nor am I a history buff on either, but after reading this book, I'm far more interested in their storied histories. Even if you plan to skip Empyre, I highly recommend every Marvel fan read this so they can bathe in the glory of comics visual storytelling at its peak. Read Full Review

Amazing prologue issue for Empyre. Thompson returns to his creation, the Warner family. By the way, the art by Iulis and Rodriguez is simply astounding. I don't think there's been better art in a comic all year. Thompson does a great job of simplifying the complex history of the Kree and Skrulls. My expectations were admittedly low for Empyre, but Marvel might be on to something here

Great summation of what is leading up to Empyre and also a good character based piece about the suffering that continual conflict brings. I haven't read almost any other event lead-in's that work this well. Writing, art, pacing - all pretty danged great. Also, it got me excited for what comes next.

Great intro that's very well put together. I liked the Warners a lot and they deserve a bigger role. I really don't care about the Empyre event but I will check out the next issue....in ahhh June? The art was outstanding and worked so well. Rodriguez is great as usual but de Lulis is killing it here!

Prelude: Empyre is coming and as such, it's time for me to prepare myself. Especially as I have zero knowledge about any of the areas the event will be tackling. The Good: Even though I haven't read it, I like that they used the characters from Meet the Skrulls here. Really good way of catching up on past events for Empyre. I love the chaotic story, how we're never quite sure what is happening which leaves for the perfect cliffhanger to kick Empyre off with. The Bad: The art whiplash was a bit much for me. I understand why they did it, but it just messed with me too much. Conclusion: A very good introduction to Empyre. It lays the foundations well and drives the plot forward to prepare readers for the event.

Do yourself a favor and read Meet the Skrulls before you read this because it is fantastic and it becomes very exciting to catch up with the Warner family again. I found the recap pages fit nicely into the narrative and they're useful as well since I'm not interested in digging up all of these other stories for context. As a result, this is one of the few 'Road to' books that I actually like.

This is a recap issue summarizing the stories important for the Empyre event from all of Marvel history (Kree/Skrull war, Mar-Vell, Celestial Madonna stuff, Wiccan and Hulkling from Young Avengers etc.) for that it's awesome, don't expect much more though. But if you aren't particularly interested it's hell of a lot cheaper than getting the relevant trades.

Even though the info-dumps were nicely written and beautifully illustrated, they still felt like unwanted interruptions to what would otherwise be a fantastic bonus issue of "Meet the Skrulls."
