Feb 26, 2020Avengers #31 stands nicely on its' own echoing the origin of Iron Man and reminding readers of the complexity and flaws of Tony as both a human and hero. Readers not following Aaron's run deserve to pick this issue up as a character exploration. Readers keeping track of Aaron's connections will find more threads and future story arcs to enjoy. Good stuff, but the art mix is distracting. Would be better if it was just Zaffino, as he's the best of the bunch.

Aaron gives a great issue of Tony struggling to survive in 1 million BC and continues to do a great job of building up one of his main villains: Mephisto. Unfortunately, it's not vintage Jason Aaron without a major retcon. Howard Stark being a devil worshiper all along and him promising Mephisto his son Tony is such an idiotic retcon and keeps this issue from a much higher rating. I hope Aaron retcons this retcon.

It was interesting for sure as an exploration of who Tony Stark is and where Iron-Man fits in there but three things stand out and don't really work well. One, Tony Stark believes in THE devil (as Mephisto likes to claim) but not God makes no sense to me (But maybe his ego keeps him in denial). Two, How in the world are you gonna drop such a big retcon like that where it just don't fit especially that Bendis recently blew up the whole thing to pieces for no reason. Three, obviously the fatherhood claims by Mephisto are him completely F-ing with Tony's mind but combined with the other retcon becomes too much. Yes some of these threads will be resolved but too much was crammed here. The art didn't help as way too many jarring changes took awa more

Its had some good parts and looked good throughout but theres just something about how Aaron writes Tony that I really dont like. A lot of it comes off corny and the humor just doesn't click for me.

Jason Aaron's Avengers are so divorced from other Marvel titles that they're practically in an alternate universe. And this is another comic that absolutely did not need to take a spin on the artist carousel.

Jason Aaron loses his way badly. The Devil and Howard Stark. Really? The ludicrous BC Whatever Avengers don't help. Also, Aaron seems to be ripping off the Immortal Hulk Devil Dad storyline. Awful.
