If there is anywhere that the book falters, its in the writing of America herself. Typically portrayed as a badass neer-do-well, she mostly just coasts through the proceedings, displaying little of her trademark personality. It may be more of an introspective portrayal, but it seems an odd choice considering how much the story focuses on her. There are moments where her personality comes out, particularly during an interaction with special guest star Spider-Man. Vazquez also dispenses with any real exposition, making no mention of the Young Avengers and only hinting at Americas power-set. Despite the lack of accessibility, its a refreshing change that puts trust in the reader to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the characters. Read Full Review

Bottom Line: This first issue excels at giving previously unaware readers a refresher course in America Chavez 101 while still delivering the kind of fun superhero action Marvel readers sign up for. Although I did my best, I personally don't feel I did the creative team of Vazquez, Gomez and Aburtov justice on their fantastic first issue. I've been a long time DC reader and finally decided to pick up a Marvel book for the first time. Without any advice or knowledge of what to pick I grabbed America Chavez because of the cover and boy was I surprised! THIS is how you do a #1! As someone who doesn't know the universe at all beyond the movies it felt incredible to not only get to know the character, her origin and her current struggles, but it was fun to see other Marvel characters in action in a way that didn't feel like I was confused! Now I'm actually fascinated to learn more about her team, The Young Avengers, and I might just pick up another Marvel title or two. Because of how INCREDIBLY this #1 was written in now excited to finish this series as well as explore more Marve l content! This is how you do it! Keep it friendly for new readers while keeping it interesting! more

I actually really liked the book. Art was well done and I liked the bits of humor. The flow and pacing of the story is spot on, you are left hanging with a mysterious figure. I'll grab the second issue for sure.

I was kinda dreading reading this, mostly because the 2017 solo series America Chavez had was abysmal. I know that's a bit unfair to the new creative team, but we've all got stigmas. Luckily, this was actually good! It's not my favorite thing in the world, but it's solid and I'm actually looking forward to seeing how this series reconciles all the retcons the character has been through, and hopefully streamlines her a bit.

Hola, mi gente! It's been a while since we've had an America solo comic! Guess what? It's BUENO! Well, it's a good comic compared to the basura that was Gabby Rivera's comic! Just kidding, it's actually a good comic -- and right off the bat it goes and retcons America's origin story as depicted by Gabby's trash comic. The lineart by Carlos Gomez is great! I was familiar with his stuff rom the Red Sonja series from some years ago (written by Amy Chu) -- however, the colors are just not as crisp, so the art ends up looking a bit muddy, but that's not Gomez' fault I'm actually hopeful this will be a good America Chavez comic by the time this wraps up.

America's powers are on the fritz, and a Mystery Antagonist is taking a run at her heretofore-unseen adoptive family in Washington Heights. The art is great and the writing is satisfactory so far. This script has captured my attention, but future issues will need to work a little harder to get me truly engaged.

This has good and bad things. The Good: the cities are greatly drawn and feel very real, Kate and America have a really nice friendship, America's brother is very cute and the ending left me wanting more. The Bad: Kate and America fight giant moles (as if there were not actual villains in the Marvel Universe that could make the fight interesting), in this scene there is also a fangirl that interviews America while she fight because apparently it is a very smart thing to do (I bet she is the villain), there is a useless Spider-Man cameo (It's not as if he was there to make the book sell more because he is not on the cover. He just shows up, talks and does crowd control), America is not a smart character and I am sure that she would be dead i f she was a powerless hero and the dialogue is very bad. It is as unnatural as it could be. more
