Flashpoint: Beyond #5

I've been a strong believer that a great story makes the reader truly think. If a story can drum up some solid water cooler talk, forum discussions, imaginative theories, speculative discussions, inquisitive responses, and unending questions then it deserves some outstanding praise. The writing team has created their own Secret Crisis that explains what happens in the Omniverse vs. Hypertime, making the Devine Continuum very interesting. I can't wait to discover more of it, but we still have the world of Flashpoint to survive through. Read Full Review

Flashpoint Beyond #5 starkly spells out everything wrong with DC continuity and confirms why this title hasn't justified returning to the Flashpoint timeline. I had quite a bit of fun writing this review, but at the end of it I find myself feeling a little sad. I don't know why I thought this would end any other way hell, I began my issue #0 review with the proviso of why I felt this comic was creatively bankrupt. I suppose for a moment, I was hoping the story could perhaps escape the endless ouroboros of DC events, and do something that doesn't try to suck me back into the same old tired comic book tropes. The art is just great, throughout the series it has been maintained at a high level and it is something that stands out in the works in which Johns participates. On the other hand, I am a big fan of Johns' works, he seems to me to be a writer of great quality who has made a good name for himself in the American comic industry, I really do not know and cannot imagine what relevance or impact this comic will have in the future of the DC Universe (especially when, unlike in the past, the "events" actually meant something and their consequences played out over time) but the mere fact of returning to the Flashpoint Universe (which I think can be exploited even more) with a story like this, of great quality, is justification enough to read th is series. Something that is not completely clear to me is the situation of Martha Wayne, her body was not buried somewhere in the desert, according to King's run in the Batman series...or she was the Martha of the "main" earth... In any case, the reading is great and I hope a great closing. By the way, the relationship between this penguin and Thomas Wayne is 10 and for some reason, if Thomas survives I would like a particular character to become his Robin, it would be interesting in my opinion. more

I am loving this! Great art and great concepts. The fuck you to Dark Crisis right out the gate was hilarious, and reminds me of Blackstars #2 by Morrison. The page with Thomas descending as the shards of glass reflecting a moment with a fallen Robin was spectacular. Just a beautiful book period. Very excited to see how this ends.

I like seeing Thomas Wayne Batman, which is really the main reason I am picking this series up. But the credibility of this plot is not in good shape. I am rooting for this series, but the past 2 issues keep raising WTF flags, Geoff Johns. You need to really work hard to get me to make me agree with Nicholas Finch. I am big fan interested in hearing the tragic tale of Thomas Wayne. But last issue, the big reveal of Martha Wayne, as the Clockwork Killer was just unbelievable. Also the reveal of Martha Wayne as a time traveler is unbelievable. Martha Wayne "building a time machine." OK, I can only hope that Geoff Johns has some alternate explanation for this totally unbelievable plot in the next issue. I am really only rating thi s out of sympathy for Thomas Wayne. I do hope it improves. more

DC Fan of Sorts - regarding "At this stage, Johns isn't actually writing it" - I have suspected that, and also expect there is goal to force Flashpoint:Beyond to fit with other storylines, DCEU goals, editorial vision, etc. Not sure of what that is or how much I really care either. If wasn't for Thomas Wayne tragic story, I wouldn't be giving any $$/time of my own on this.

This issue took a turn for the worst. It starts with a very strange interview that's confrontational and nonsensical. The woman declares that she's the smartest woman in the world and why is the time bureau even a thing here? Woman-splaning the omniverse or whatever. It felt like a big lecture or training seminar. Not a fan of this whole scene. Then the Martha-Joker knows all about time travel and met the other Joker, who they threw a name onto. Oswald begs Batman to help the kid and he's so sure that the timeline is going to be rebooted that he refuses. It was all just weird and I wasn't a fan of this issue at all.

So if I wasn't fascinated by the tragic story of Thomas Wayne, I would be agreeing with you on your rating. Former geology assistant and history grad who became "Dr." Bonnie Baxter is the expert on time - at least on that stage. But Martha Wayne becoming a genius in time-travel (shrug). And Thomas would have (and ultimately did) rescued the child. Messed-up storyline now. Ugh.
