It remains to be seen how the story proceeds from here, but Abnett sets a good enough foundation that it should make for an entertaining read, and Damian Couceiros art (with Matt Milla's colors) definitely lends a feeling of retroness in Groot #1 that works with the inherent classic setting of the story. More crucially, however, Couceiro is able to deliver on what matters most in any Groot comic: selling the emotional scenes that endear everyone to the lovable tree-thing, especially in his baby Groot state originally seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Groot #1 seems like it wants to do a lot, but in trying to do it all makes its individual parts weaker. Still a fun read, but felt like it could've been more. Solid art and beautiful colors are almost worth the price of admission on their own. Read Full Review

I love the character of Mar-vell (Genis and Phyla also. I'll buy whatever the Mar-vell family shows up in. Teddy feels like the odd one out but he's alright too.) I also have no interest on Marvel bringing Mar0vell back to life, he's a character whose legacy makes him interesting. So reading about him again in a flash back was great. Groot is fun, it's his comic, but it's the Mar-vell stuff that really made me happy with this issue.

It's essentially a middling Star Trek story, but I appreciate how smoothly the Marvel elements have been massaged into the script. It's nicely-paced, too, holding interest as the action ebbs and flows. The art's imperfect, occasionally dropping the ball when it comes to detail and dynamism, but there are also plenty of visual flares. A touch of great expression, a spread of inventive blocking--ultimately, I like the visuals. Subjectively, at least, it succeeds in the core mission of any #1: It has me looking forward to #2.
