Nov 04, 2024The Rocketfellers "Family Odysseys" launch caught my attention when it was teased in Ghost Machine #1 earlier this year. I'll admit, I had some pretty high hopes for this book and it more than exceeded expectations. It would have been easy for the creative team to just play with sci-fi tropes for this family of time-displaced castaways, but they found a way to ground the sci-fi component and lean into the human element for a truly unique story. I will give credit to the Ghost Machine creators, each of these books feels distinctly different. The Rocketfellersfits perfectly into an existing gap in the comic book industry, and I couldn't be more excited to see where the family's adventures go from here. Whether your kids are on a can phone, an iPhone, or a Holo-Phone, certain family dynamics seem to transcend time, and The Rocketfellers are no different. The present and the future are beautifully intertwined to tell this unique story in a fun, futuristic, yet relatable way. Ghost Machine is blowing me away, and Rocketfellers is no exception. Absolutely excited to see more from Peter Tomasi and Francis Manapul!

Plot This comic shows the Rocketfeller family (Rocket-Feller, not related to the famous billionaire family) on a spaceship in the 25th century escaping from time "cops" who are after Roland, his only goal. The family is made up of Roland-Father, Rachel-Mother, Richie-oldest son, Rae-youngest daughter, Rose-grandmother and Rodney-Grandfather. The ship crashes in the snow and the family escapes but Rose is trapped in a thin layer of ice, which is about to crack, she sacrifices herself for the family and gives Roland a pendant with Cronex, a source of energy that allows them to use a time machine and escape. Very enjoyable first issue with a wholesome family. Excellent art. Several plot hooks left in their to get things moving so that was nice. Also man the quality of the paper in this book... so much better than the Marvel or DC stuff. +.5 for that

The concept of Rocketfellers (horrible name by the way) reminds me of Mark Millar's Chrononauts, but the writing and art are not on the same level. I like the family though, and with a more capable artist, it could draw me in.
