The story has so many interpretations of the same battle, allow so much more to be covered than what may be seen in the main event. The different creative teams result in contrasting tones for the stories. Some have comedic elements, others more grotesque. A few focus on hope while there are some much darker. The Last 52 begins with Wonder Woman, all gold and gusto, facing down The Darkest Knight. After some nice, short, but sweet mini tales, the book ends with Wonder Woman facing down The Darkest Knight. Dec 31, 2020The only story I felt was worth the read was Armageddon Blues. This was Constantine vs. Dark(er?) Constantine in a way only they could: getting to know each other over a drink in the only pub in the wasteland of Themyscira. I can't help but chuckle as I think about how much it felt like The Nan In Black going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line. If you feel like eight pages of entertainment is worth $8.99, then I'd say grab this book. Hopefully you'll enjoy it more than I did. Read Full Review

The swamp thing story was probably the worst one but I enjoyed most of the stories more than I thought I would. Not really needed but a good read.

I'm surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one. With other Death Metal one shots, the anthology stories felt unconnected and sometimes just not interesting. But here, the setting was clear and the spotlights made sense/were internally consistent. Definitely corny moments but I really liked it, the brief snippets into characters I normally don't follow. Compared to almost every other Death Metal issue, I think it's the best - though the bookends of the story, with wonder woman, didn't do a thing for me.

Wooo, I'm so done with this event. This is pointless unless you're just... So into Death Metal. These stories, aside from the framing story, follow the same pattern. Hero meets their evil Dark Multiverse counterpart, and defeats them. It's usually through hope, but there are a few exceptions. The standout stories are James Tynion IV's The Batmen Who Laugh and Matthew Rosenberg's Armageddon Blues. The Batmen Who Laugh is so ridiculous. It's a parody. I have to believe it's Tynion taking the piss out of this event. It's just so dumb, and makes hardly any sense. If it's not that, then it's probably one of the worst stories in this anthology.
