DC Comics News - Derek McNeil

There's a lot of potential evident this book, but I really think that it could be vastly improved if Johns were to slow the pace of the story somewhat and not try to cram multiple storylines into a single arc. Dc should consider looking at the continuity in the release cycle of the title schedule if it wants to keep the interest of the readers - even if this means giving the book to another writer. With Mr. Mind, Dr. Sivana and Black Adam all working together the series looks to be building to a major showdown soon. Johns has never lacked for ideas or creative scripts with the title. It's just a matter of finding the time to keep it on a regular monthly rotation. Provided that could be a 2020 resolution, Shazam could be one of DC's breakout titles next year. Read Full Review

With Shazam #8, this series seems to be back on track after a massive series of delays, and all the better as it's the closest we've gotten to vintage Geoff Johns in a long time. An ambitious, mythology-driven take that still keeps the property's focus on found family, it's approaching the end of its first main arc and has split its team of heroes among multiple worlds. We finally have the Shazam Family back in action here, but the end result feels a bit rushed and certain aspects of the story feel off because of it.  I'm not a huge fan of Scott Kolins art, but he does a decent job here in depicting the many places that Geoff Johns wants to go with this story...... which really, needs to be tightened up a bit because while I like a lot of what we're getting, we don't get enough of it to really satisfy by the end and I just hope that the next issue, when it finally comes out is able to feel more cohesive. There's enough interesting ideas in the story to carry it, and for the most part the art looks fine, but fleeting moments of stiff character work stick out like sore thumbs. Read Full Review

My least favorite issue of this new Shazam run was saved by the final page's big reveal, but I'm honestly just hoping that the Black Adam storyline pans out or we're in trouble. The villain game has been weak so we could use something menacing to keep things spicy. With all that said, Billy, Mary, Darla, andmostof the crew make it where they need to go for the Shazam family to finally come full circle. But who will this mysterious 7th champion be to combat these evil new forces? Read Full Review

Pretty fun, but man I wish we saw the Captain Marvel family escape death.

Prelude: The last issue of Shazam was quite strong so let's see how Johns goes on this issue. The Good: Everyone is coming back together and I'm liking how they did it. Sivana is interesting with Mr. Mind. Billy's dad being the 7th Champion has potential. I'll wait for it to play out though. The Bad: Feels like a bit of a retread from the New 52 Shazam story. Kolin's art feels rushed here. Conclusion: The issue is interesting but it's a noticeable drop in quality. Hopefully Johns improves in the next issue.

Probably my least favorite issue of the run so far, mostly due to the switch in art. Eaglesham is a master of the 60s 70s vibe arrt that is great to see in a fun comic like this, but Scott Kolin's art just doesn't get there for me. Not to say it's bad, it's perfectly serviceable, but Eaglesham is what really was making me love this series. The story is good though, with more revelations regarding Billy's family and dad, I don't like that the Shazam power is becoming less special, after the New 52 ending and now this, it seems like anyone and everyone can get Shazam powers, which makes Billy himself seem redundant and not as unique as he should be. Another small complaint is that the series gets delayed so much, it's hard to see how this more
