You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Jul 24, 2024As competent as it is with the basic action of the situation, there simply isnt enough hard science in the series to make it terribly compelling as a concept. Its good superficial action fun, but it could be SO MUCH more of Johns and Fabok were interested in getting a bit deeper into the science of the situation. The encyclopedic entries on The Wildlife Grid and the Warden Helms at the end of the issue do a pretty good job of going in the right direction, but the series could gain a lot from getting more seriously into wildlife biology. This continues to be one of my favorite books on the shelf each month. The art needs no more said, it's amazing. The story continues to really grab my attention. I'm already a sucker for things animal related, animal familiars and things like that. Dystopian futures is also one of my favorite genres, so this one has a lot going on that's squarely in my lane. Geoff Johns is doing a really great job making the various wardens unique and interesting, as well as building the world around them. I loved the way Rook had more sympathy and connection with the pig than he does his own birds heh.

Plot Ursaw and his wardens of pigs (the one who stole Swine's helmet) and snakes arrive at the Oasis, Carapace manages to evacuate all the children and women, but the brutal attack of the bears is not expected. Rook and Dire Wolf go to meet Ursaw but their paths divide, and Dire Wolf faces Kaa, Dannica's former enemy, the guardian of the snakes, while Rook faces the one who stole Swine's helmet, there are two amazing happening at the same time, they both win and go to help Carapace, who is defeated by Ursaw. Ursaw is powerful and manages to defeat Carapace, Dire Wolf and Rook, sending the latter into the dam's lagoon. Maybe I am just missing something here but the plot is an absolute mess. The art is great and the concept is good but it feels like the action and dialogue are out of sink with each other. If I was being honest it felt like the art was completed before the speech was inserted. This happens way to much and usually when the writer is spinning to many plates. Sorry only my take and I will quietly drop the title.
