The Captain has thwarted a cadre of space dinosaurs, talked the gods into being reasonable for five little minutes, and managed to look A-OK doing it. So what's left? WELL WE CREEP. YEEEAAAHHH, WE KEEP IT ON THE DOWN-LOW. It's the fight of the century: THE CAPTAIN VS. THE CREEPER!

Funny, weird, and fulfilling, this issue showcases a perfectly campy yet surprisingly touching tale that serves as a very appropriate way to pass the torch to the new creative team. Read Full Review

This is a breezy and easy to enjoy comic. Sometimes they don't have to be overly intricate. This issue more than gets the job done and was a standout read this week. Read Full Review

This feels like one of those random team-up issues that Waid used to write in Brave and the Bold way back pre-New 52, which is a strength of his that often doesn't get acknowledged. Waid knows DC so well that he can basically throw any two characters into any situation and have a compelling read. Read Full Review

    ComicBook.com - Chase Magnett

There are a handful of clever turns in interactions between the innocent Captain and cynical Creeper, and their contrasts make for a pleasantly distracting, if inessential, issue of Shazam!. Read Full Review

    Weird Science - Gabe Hernandez

Shazam! #9 is a fun little break from DC's typically morose storytelling for a breezy, one-and-done pairing of The Captain with The Creeper. New readers will find this issue a great jumping-on point to learn about The Creeper, and the art is excellent, but the fight to capture an ethereal villain gets shortchanged in favor of a slow start. This being Waid's final issue on Shazam seems so weird. Like they just ripped him off the book even though he was doing a great job. I wanted at least one more arc with him. All that being said, I laughed a lot this issue and the several set up at the start of the issue pay off throughout. Excellent time to be had reading this book. Its just fun. That final page was great. Only issue was the slow start. Took a couple of extra pages but those pages did a lot for a lot of set up and some good small chuckles before the fights and payoff occurred. I am just sad that we will likely never see another Waid Shazam book as this was great. I might drop Shazam after this.

Waid ends his run on Shazam! rather unceremoniously, but still with the series's trademark fun and humor.

A pretty fun issue to end Waid's run on the title. It didn't really feel like much of an ending, but I don't think it was really meant to with Josie Campbell taking over with the next issue. Speaking of which, I hope she can maintain the quality of this series. At the time of this writing, I don't believe I've ever read anything from her.

kind of a weak issue and ending to Mark Waid's run. I hope the next writer will keep this series strong and have a good voice for Billy Batson.
