Not sure I have EVER read an issue #1 this strong (second time through). Having already read through "Infinity", I wanted to come back through these early issues and look for the brilliant setups and I was not disappointed. Hickman is indeed one of the most gifted architects of his generation.

Judge this on it's own merit. It isn't 1986 anymore and that's ok. "The Dark Knight Returns" holds it's status today because of the boundaries it broke in its release, not to mention it being a single Batman story for the ages. Just as you wouldn't compare a modern day play with Shakespeare, look at this as an evolution rather than a comparison.
Miller, already pushing 60, decides yet again to return to his holy grail, and why not after flame out 'Strikes Again', both deserved redemption. This time he returns with backup in the form of writer Brian Azzarello (Joker/Batman: Damned) and DC legacy artist Andy Kubert (Batman and Son). The story is a classic DC tale of the fabled shrunken and bottle city of Kandor, final remains of the planet Krypton. Upon his release, self appointed cult leader 'Quar father', deems he and his kind the master race of Earth due to their superhuman supremacy absorbed through the rays of Earth's yellow sun.
As the story progresses we are introduced to our cast of heroes through the wonderfully strange "Dark Knight Universe" one-shots, featured in Miller's crass art style, more reminiscent of his work in 'Ronin' rather than that of TDKR. The collection of variant covers this series earned (over 70) is an illustrated love letter to not only the Dark Knight but Miller himself, with names like Jim Lee, Brian Bolland and other industry titans all paying tribute. This is a worthy entry to the series and an expansion into Miller's unique world.

"The Last Crusade" serves as a prelude to the "Death in the Family" storyline in Frank Miller's 'Dark Knight Universe' canon. The writing is arguably the best Miller has produced in decades and features consistently fantastic strokes from Romita Jr. It's a much smaller story than "TDKR" or more comparatively 'Master Race', but fits in perfectly with Miller's world of grim tales.

Outside of one or two of the stories, really not enough was divulged for this issue to matter enough. Fans are definitely getting impatient, hopefully Death Metal #3 delivers (it did).

An excellent concept riffing off elements from notorious fantasy publication 'Heavy Metal', which (not coincidentally) is managed by fellow DC scribe Grant Morrison. It seems to me today's comic book readers have become awfully spoiled. I've been a DC reader for two decades and this is one of my favorite concepts in a long time.
Getting to explore the Dark Multiverse and the upside down Batman incarnations is the stuff of dreams for me. The one-shots for these new villains (Dawnbreaker, Red Death, etc) gives more depth to each of the evil entities, presenting them with a tangible fear and building a proper sense of the horrors to take place.
Even the smallest characters in DC canon have a place in "Metal", with superstar writer Scott Snyder and real life metalhead Greg Capullo pushing the pen, this is not a series to be missed by fans of the lore.

It's purpose was multifold, address missing characters pre-Flashpoint, introduce the Multiverse and successfully integrate DC's most acclaimed property of the last half century, the Watchmen.

While not entirely original (or canonical) it is certain to entertain and satisfy horror and superhero fans alike. While I wasn't overwhelmingly impressed by the story (a typical 'outbreak' scenario, though in the form of anti-life), the intense art style overcompensates for any lack of imagination in that department. There were some refreshing and unique changes (namely GL Canary), but on the other hand certain major character deaths happened too fast to really matter.

Every panel of this comic is incredible. Not only is it a fresh perspective on characters we all know inside and out, but the art is just as good as it gets in the medium.

I haven't read every issue of Hal Jordan's adventures through space and time, but I would wager that this is one of the single greatest entries in the publishing history of DC's GL lines. Morrison proves his genius and creates a story of pure poetry in a profound and relative narrative with Liam Sharp's transcendent lines and ethereal colors.

DC's Earth-One line is reintroducing us to their greatest icons one volume at a time but with new leases on life. Since these characters exist on Earth-One in the DC multiverse (Not Earth-0), this is not intended to be a retelling of their origin stories but rather an alternate telling of them.
This story is one you may already know if you are familiar with Lantern Lore, but the writing is what impresses the most. The novel was seemingly written as if it was expected to be adapted into a feature film, ditching the tired old military protocol of the 'Corps' for a space opera theme that favors the visual storytelling beautifully illustrated here.
With vol 2 already on the way we will get to see how the ring continues to unfold this Hal Jordan's universe. As was already shown at the end of vol 1, we know there are much more sinister things on the way. I also highly recommend the Superman Earth One trilogy.

Really blown away by the writing in this series. Clearly this is Marvel's "Suicide Squad" using the X-Men roster with the ability to kill anyone at any moment (due to The Five being able to rebirth all mutants) puts a fun twist on it. Kinda feels like Deadpool is missing but that might be too obvious.

This is obviously beautiful, and maybe it's just me, but I have a tough time following stories with no words at all. I love the art and story but there are too many ambiguous interpretations (and occasionally scenes) for me to get a clear read on it yet.
