Absolute Batman #12
September 11, 2025
|
|
Well that's it for me, guess I'm dropping this title.
Scott Synder is moving like a bulldozer, rewriting Batman like a horror show. And yes, there is supposed to be some reinvention with the absolute titles but to me he goes way too far...and nowhere interesting. I was curious about what he would make of Batman's rogue gallery and now that I've seen their treatment without any ounce of finesse, thanks but no thanks. It's a shame because I was quite into Nick Dragotta's art.
The worst Batman story along with Hush#2 nowadays, by a long mile...

I'm simply stunned by how good this is. Every issue gets better and better, so I'm saving the perfect rating but it's coming, no doubt. By far the best of the Absolute titles !
Wonder Woman as a sorceress is just a hell of an awesome idea and Hayden Sherman is killing it !

A disappointing issue. Nothing really happens and it feels like a rip-off from Marvel selling us two first issues instead of one. The final "reveal" is not a surprise to anyone, the art is good overall but sometimes a bit cartoony. Of course, Aaron is used to build things for the long run, but with this one he's really testing our patience.

This is more like it ! After a disappointing second issue (or was that issue 1 part 2?) there was much more content to enjoy in this one. The meddling of the everpresent Loki is fully justified with an insightful exchange between him and one of the Avengers. Entertaining with good character writing and a few surprises along the way. Can't wait for the return of the prehistoric Avengers!

It was really an average run at best. The visuals were good, but every human is flawed, and Chip Zdarsky is too, case in point with this lukerwarm final issue that had me rolling my eyes at several moments.

And that's how it's done ! While Marvel's issue of the crossover was a big fail, DC's offering is much better.
In the main story, we get the long-awaited reteaming of the creators of Klaus. Though it's not on par with their previous work, Morrison goes adequately bonkers with the story and Dan Mora's art is brimming with details. I'm not sure I got everything but it kept me immmersed and interested.
But the high points of this issue are clearly for me the second and the third stories. Hayden Sherman gives his best illustrating a meeting between Constantine and Doctor Strange plotted by 3 big guns, Snyder, Tynion IV and Williamson. The result is intelligent and true to the 2 characters. And Tom Taylor offers a heartwarming tale with 2 heroes he's well-acquainted with, Nightwing and Laura Kinney, with exquiste artwork by Bruno Redondo.
Who cares that the 2 other shorter stories are just meh, this is an easy win for DC Comics !!!

What a good idea to waste some talented artists for a quick cash grab !!!!
Did I say talents ? Maybe that's pushing it in the case of Frank Miller whom I would call aa formerly talented artist. His Batman vs Wolverine might be the worst thing I've read in a while.
Good parts ? Well I guess the Krypto vs Jeff was cute, Adam Kubert did a good job on Green Arrow vs DD and The Rocket Racoon/ GL story was fun, thanks to Al Ewing. But really nothing to recommend wholeheartedly.

No review from the critics for this one ? Sometimes I feel like there are just a few of us that are in on the awesomeness of this stuff. A very strong rebirth issue for the X-men. Generally I'm not a big fan of Jonathan Hickman, as his narration can sometimes get a bit too confusing for my taste, but on this one I got more and more engrossed in his world building. Larraz's art is excellent, as usual. Now let's hope that Marvel does deliver on these good promises... At least I'm hopeful for the X-Men series.

A perfect ending for the best run at Marvel in the 2010s. Reading it felt a bit like the end of LOTR, with multiple endings (all of them good !!!) and some new ideas thrown in for good measure. Clearly, Aaron's creative well was far from dry. Kudos to you, Jason, the greatest Thor fan !!! And good luck to Donny Cates and Nick Klein, they have a heavy task ahead for them, coming after that...

I would have liked to love this one more. The art was good all through and Jason Aaron's script
is competent, though nowhere near the level of what he's doing on Thor. Truth be told, this comic lacks a bit of focus and sometimes feels like a series of previews, without the coherence of what made DC Rebirth#1 a great reading.

An awesome ending full of spectacular battles and character moments. Jason Aaron has professed his admiration for Grant Morrison's run on "Batman" and he just might have come up with an equivalent for his tenure on "Thor". A joy to read and reread again and again. And as for Russell Dauterman and co what can we say except their labour of love is showing on every page. Very well done indeed !!!!
