Word Of The Nerd - Cat Wyatt
Oct 23, 2019Valkyrie #4 was a dramatic issue, quickly and effortlessly establishing a new threat and plot for Jane Foster. And it wasn't afraid to put other characters in the line of fire in order to increase the emotional investment of its readers. Read Full Review

You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Oct 23, 2019The series continues. Foster is being pushed in quite a few different directions this issue alone. Shes just learning the ropes. The challenge is going to be letting her gain some proficiency and wisdom on the job. Without maintaining the earthbound charm that the series has been gliding through so fluidly so far. The fourth issue is a fun mix of different elements. If they can maintain that mix going forward, this particular Valkyrie could have a nice, long life. Read Full Review

Comic Watch - Gabriel De Jesus
Oct 31, 2019Ewing, Aaron, CAFU, and Aburtov craft another engaging beautiful installment with Jane Foster: Valkyrie #4. Every piece seems to fit just right with a sense of intent, making the delay and means of acknowledging a characters orientation even more prominent. Read Full Review

Comics: The Gathering - Charles Martin
Oct 23, 2019This comic is a high-wire act of comedic absurdity, blending the ridiculous and the melodramatic into a sublime, hilarious whole. Where lesser creators might faceplant in the course of this delicate balancing act, the Valkyrie team triumphs and delivers an exceptionally "comic-book-y" comic. It's a good-vs-evil struggle with the highest possible stakes, yet it's also a shaggy dog story with a flying, talking horse. It all works thanks to the talent, effort, experience, and close collaboration of the creative team. Read Full Review

Oct 23, 2019This book up until now couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a serious Thor-esque book with all the pomp and pageantry or a funny book that doesn't take itself too seriously. This issue goes full out funny - and picks up because of it. Read Full Review

After a great issue 1, J found issues 2 and 3 of Valkyrie: Jane Foster to be quite unimpressive. And wow, what an issue. Valkyrie: Jane Foster 4 is a bit of a day off of sorts for Jane, as she attends a lecture with her buddy Lisa. Meanwhile, Mephisto, who is endlessly funny, recruits Grim Reaper to be his Valkyrie, which is only possible because of an old deal with Hela. To become a Valkyrie, the Reaper must either kill Jane or bring another hero to Valhalla. Dr Strange happens to be at the same lecture as Jane when a magic mirror starts acting up. Out of the mirror, which turns out to be a portal to the purple dimension, comes 3 of Stephen's foes, including Kaecilus. In the middle of the battle, Grim Reaper accepts Mephisto's deal and cap more

Prelude: Jason Aaron and Al Ewing have been knocking it out of the park with Valkyrie. Now that we're back on track with the story, let's see how it all goes. The Good: Mephisto. Man, he was amazing. Didn't expect to see Strange either. Always glad to see him though. Mr Horse continues to be funny. This was quite a funny issue all things considered. The Bad: Grim Reaper isn't too much of a threat really but it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Strangely, this issue feels like it focuses less on Jane and more on what's happening around her. Conclusion: Another great chapter for Valkyrie though for this issue, both our hero and villain seem to be a bit lacking. Hopefully this set-up will come to fruit n more

In the interview in Immortal Hulk Director's Cut #6, Al Ewing talked about tailoring every one of the early issues in that series to be a working "hop on" point for new readers. I think he's applying that lesson here, and the thorough recapping does slow down the pace a bit. But the recapping's enjoyable as all get-out, and all of the guest stars crowding out Jane in this issue deliver more than enough delight to make up for the slowdown.
