Comics: The Gathering - Nick Devonald

The penultimate issue to Cates run on Venom, an important set up for both the King in Black finale and the Venom finale, filled with moments that are guaranteed to have lasting effects on a number of characters and the future of the symbiotes. It works as a character study of Eddie Brock as well, early on in the run the question, ‘Who is Eddie Brock’, was asked, and the rest of the series has been spent trying to answer that question. This issue and King in Black #5 finally begin to answer that question. Excellent writing, fantastic art, this issue will appeal to more than just Venom fans. Read Full Review

Venom #34 is the kind of comic that is enjoyable, but also does what the mainline book could have done with fewer pages. It's a tie-in to a larger story that doesn't have a lot to delve into, but at least it looks great doing it. Since much of Eddie's struggle in this issue is given to him, the hero doesn't grow all that much and instead serves as a bystander in his own story. That said, it's a story we've seen before as the hero is called to do something great, which leads into King in Black's finale well enough. Read Full Review

Once I stopped asking questions, I found myself having fun reading this. Iban Coello will always be a plus on anything he draws, and I'm always happiest to have him on any Venom story. Donny Cates wanted to play with a lot of different ideas here, and while getting to these ideas was messy, the actual result was fun. It was a bombastic ride that I enjoyed more than the actual event's finale. Read Full Review

It feels like Cates is trying to paint this picture of a down-and-out hero that overcomes all obstacles, yet, its never him that overcomes. Its always someone or something else. Readers, Im at a loss. I know what Cates is trying to do and how hes trying to make me feel. However, its so forced down my throat I find myself struggling to accept the narrative. And ultimately, this entire issue of VENOM can be summarized in one sentence and skipped right over. Was this issue merely filler to get us to 200 on the button? It seems that way. Let me know what you think, have a great week, and God bless. Read Full Review

While there's certainly a lot of fun to be had in this issue of Venom, it really only works well as a companion to the final installment of King in Black. Read Full Review

Seems I may enjoy this issue more than others but you'll have that sometimes lucky me. I was floored by this I have been blown away by most of the king in black run it is really amazing.i thought the story and artwork on this issue were both tremendous it's a shame cates and stegman are leaving this book but they are leaving it on top and I eagerly await the news of who will follow the best venom run the character has ever had

Like other issues of these tie-ins, it is mostly set-up and not necessary to read. However, it is very good, has great art and teases interesting things to come.

KING IN BLACK comes out a little bland without these last 2 Venom issues. I found this to make the whole story much more whole!

This seemed a bit lacking in its stakes. I didn't feel the danger here, but it was still a solid issue despite this. The standout thing here is that Flash is back, and if you're not happy about that, you're just factually wrong.

This ends the King in Black tie-ins of this book, and pretty much reaches the conclusion of the run as a whole. This was another fun issue, cannot wait to see where the ending leads to as it's very exciting.

So Flash is back? Where was the editor's note for Carnage ever being dragon? I don't remember that during Absolute Carnage. This was a cool little tie-in , but added nothing important to the main story. Skippable, but as a comic book head, I just had to pick it up - though Knull, looks weak as ever here. Even Venom's symboite basically said he wasn't worth the fade. Damn Cates, should've built up his boss villain better. But the book is action packed with a redemption arc, so Knull's weakness can be easily glossed over with feel good moment after feel good moment. - Audiomack.com/cvrthebard

A closer look at the resurrection of Eddie Brock emphasizes that Venom and Flash Thompson had as much to do with bringing him back as the Enigma Force did. The prose is merely functional and the plot developments don't fit that well into the main event. But the character work is on point and the art is terrific. Imma just say it: I prefer Coello + Aburtov to Stegman + Martin by a considerable margin -- and the colors (i.e. using more than 3 of them) have a lot to do with it.

Venom Volume: 4, Issue: 34, Legacy: 199 "Rise" Publisher: Marvel @marvel Writer: Donny Cates @dcates Artist: Iban Coello @coelloiban Colors: Jesus Aburtov @aburtov Letters: Clayton Cowles Cover: Iban Coello & Jesus Aburtov This issue showcases how Eddie, was able to return to life following his death at the hands of Knull. As Eddie is transformed by the Enigma Force into Captain Universe, Flash Thompson rises from the grave! The story basically serves as a filler issue in between King in Black 4 & 5. The artwork within is perfect, which is one thing that's always been consistent throughout this entire series.
