Mar 16, 2022Avengers #54 is a fine ending to a story that has given us a taste of the Multiversal Masters of Evil, but doesn't commit to a final conclusion. The heroes lick their wounds and future fights will occur, leaving this issue too open-ended. Mar 18, 2022The thing that does intrigue me is the mental chess match happening between Mephisto and Doom Supreme. The Orb will undoubtedly play a part in either side besting the other, so one of the upcoming issues of Avengers should shed more light on this cordial beef between devil and sorcerer. I'm standing on the hill here as the one person who liked this issue of Avengers. Maybe I'm coming at this issue with the privilege of not being completely unaware of what I'm reading. This is a dumb, fun book. I've accepted that. And I'm having fun. Do I want to see an all-powerful Doom vs Mephisto? Of course I do. Do I care that Thor's mom is the Phoenix and he has Phoenix powers? No, because I'm not a fucking nerd. I'm a comics enthusiast who's read enough comics to know Thor's had at least 17 different moms. So, I can enjoy myself here. I can have fun with what I'm reading. And not to downplay Aaron's writing so much, as I don't think this is a poorly written arc either. It's going for a feel and it's doing a wonderful job with that fee more

Going downhill fast. Thor fights Echo/Phoenix for how many issues then in 2 panels does 180. Just one example of so many threads trying to be made into a story by Aaron but it's not cohesive enough following what was built so far. Frigeri is OK but not a strong as he was at the beginning.

This arc trails off to a rather inconclusive end. The game's not over; it's just halftime and the bad guys are ahead on points. Storytelling is relentlessly adequate all around. The script is nicely structured, but few lines stand out as really memorable. The art is highly polished, but its style also looks dated (not in a "classic retro" way, either). I'm still interested in the big-picture plot, sort of, but the way this issue pulls back at the end reminds me of how many moving parts there are and how truly dumb some of them are. I'll throw in the caveat that I think this arc would read much better in one TPB sitting than it did spread across 4 months.

Mr Aaron keeps on trying BUT it isn't working. He's just not right for this book and he's dragging it further and further into the depths! He's a good writer; King Conan is good, the latest Punisher too...BUT please no more AVENGERS! 54 issues and still counting on wanting to read one issue twice!!!
