Cappuccio is then able to use that base and build out a visual language that conveys many of the necessary emotions and beats through natural extension. Valenzas coloring then comes to add a layer to the sense of unification for the visual look in the cerebral and carnal elements, creating a dense narrative space that still moves like a high-octane action story. Ultimate Wolverine #1 is the book that not only feels like it could reach right into the pull list of current Ultimate readers but offers a distinct flavor that some would say has been lacking from the first wave of books. This is a title worth any reader's time and continues to prove why the line is one of the most compelling to watch from any publisher. Read Full Review

I tend to leave Wolverine to Lauren but, when I heard Chris and this team assembled I had to get in on the action. Ultimate Wolverine #1 did not disappoint in the slightest. It is violent, it is bloody, and most of all it is an issue full of mystery. When we aren't gasping from claws through the face of a character we are asking ourselves what happened to Logan and what is at play here. This comic has it's claws sunk into me. Read Full Review

But Why Tho? - William Tucker

Ultimate Wolverine Issue 1 combines horror and action by fusing two imposing characters into one terrifying mixture. Adding more metal to Wolverine and making him silent puts him in the same territory as Jason Voorhees, Terminator, and the Predator. But his powers may make him more frightening than all of them. Creative Team:Writer: Chris CondonArtist: Alessandro CappuccioColor Artist: Bryan ValenzaLetterer: VC's Cory PetitWithout going into spoilers, it was great to see how the X-Men's Universe has been impacted by The Maker's actions. We've seen glimpses in the other Ultimate titles, but this new story puts some of our favorite mutants in the spotlight. The first issue is on par with Ultimate Spider-Man and The Ultimates, and the stakes are clearly high as the story gets underway. The art perfectly aligns with the other Ultimate books while adding a new layer of a horror to Logan's narrative. This feels like another must-read book from Marvel and I'm already anxiously awaiting the next chapter. Read Full Review

With the arrival of year two for the Ultimate Universe, Ultimate Wolverine #1 by Condon and Cappuccio snikts onto the scene and jams its claws into readers. There is no messing around as the story in Ultimate Wolverine #1 is very reflective of its series lead. The Ultimate Universe version of Wolverine is even more no nonsense than his mainstream counterpart. That attitude comes with a heavy backstory that works into the greater Ultimate Universe narrative that increases overall interest in Earth-6160. What is presented creates even greater investment for the Ultimate Universe and mutants place in it. Read Full Review

Ultimate Wolverine #1 is a strong start, even if it's treading familiar ground. It delivers the brutal, tragic, and unrelenting version of Logan we love while teasing an eventual breaking point that could make for an even better story. If it can better balance Logan's feral nature and humanity, this could be one of the best Wolverine runs in years. Read Full Review

Ultimate Wolverine #1 delivers a rough and tumble Wolverine under the thrall of the Eurasian Republic within the Ultimate Universe. Writer Chris Condon ticks all the boxes in creating a plausible origin for a character who is two parts Wolverine and one part Winter Soldier, and Alessandro Cappuccio's gritty, brutal art fits the character to a tee. That said, the story only makes sense if you ignore the Maker and the origin of the Ultimate Universe. Read Full Review

Super Hero Hype - Matt Morrison

    Jan 15, 2025

All in all, Ultimate Wolverine #1 does little to distinguish itself from earlier Wolverine stories. It doesn't take many chances with the concept or characters. On the other hand, this will probably please those Logan fans who think there's no reason to change what works. And for the most part, with intense action-packed art and a few good plot hooks, this issue does work. Read Full Review

Plot This first installment shows how they launch this lethal weapon to eliminate Nightcrawler and Mystique. They reveal little about the past but his transformation from Logan to Wolverine was orchestrated in the Soviet Union of this alternate universe called by Doctor Prostovich, Omega Red, Colossus and Magik. They define him as their Winter Soldier. Apparently Nightcrawler and Mystique were friends of Logan but they abandoned him, regardless of his past, Logan is now a killing machine. More remains to be revealed but this comic begins with strength this reimagining of Wolverine if he were the Winter Soldier. This comic is dizzying and full of violent fights. Here it is, my first ever 10! I don't throw this number around lightly but good lord this book is an absolute BANGER. Now, biases aside, I have been waiting for this book ever since the very first teaser for it months ago and it did not disappoint. I haven't read any of the other Ultimate Universe books (sue me, I ain't rich sorry bub) and normally these huge crossover books/universes really throw me for a loop but I love how this book doesn't need any extra context to pick it up and you feel like you know exactly what's going on and you won't need 10 other books to fill in the blanks. The art is some of the best I've ever seen in a Wolverine book and the story is so well written in this first issue that I am just so completely satisfied wi more

Just like that, the Ultimate Universe gets me super interested in another writer. I had only read one book by Deniz Camp before he came out with Ultimates, and now he's become a creator to watch, for sure. With Condon, I've only ever read the Daredevil one-shot he did for the Venom War event, which was good. This, though? This was really good stuff. It definitely helps your book when you have the amazingly talented Cappuccio on the art duties (which he killed here, unexpectedly). However, Condon provides an extremely intriguing premise here. I'm hoping to see more of Logan's history with Kurt throughout this series, especially after that letter at the end of the issue.

I thought the first issue for Ultimate Wolverine was good. It provides us what we all probably saw coming. Which was action and a merciless Wolverine which is being shown as a force to be reckoned with. And I also like that we don't know much about Logan just like him. Were meant to learn his past alongside him which I actually like if that is what Chris Condon is going for. And the art was great I think it really fits the atmosphere they're going for and its Alessandro Cappuccio, can't really go wrong there. Overall its a good issue with still more to be shown and discovered about Logan and hopefully it gets better from here on out.

This issue highlights something I've been criticizing about the new Ultimate Universe for a while, compared to the original version: the characters are too similar to their 616 counterparts. There's no real reinvention or different origin story because the core of the characters remains the same as in the main universe. Here, we're dealing with a fun "what-if" scenario-"what if Wolverine were the Winter Soldier"-but nothing truly surprising. A brainwashed Wolverine? We've seen that a hundred times already. Despite all its flaws, the original Ultimate Universe managed to surprise us and offered genuine reinvention. In this regard, DC's Absolute Universe is currently doing a better job of reimagining its characters while staying true more
