Needless to say Joshua Williamson has done it again ! Teamed up with Hayden Sherman, clearly a magaician of the visual arts, they delivered a stellar first issue that got me interested in heroes and heroins I never read about. Imagination, action and mysteries, it's got it all...I'm not giving it the perfect score just in the hope of it going higher and higher in quality, which I trust this title will do in such expert hands.

You have to get past that atrocious cover, and after that this is very entertaining with some great visuals.

Really good start here. My favorite Next Level launch of the three from this week (the others being Doom Patrol and Teen Titans). This has the task of introducing a lot, particularly with the nature of the Next Level initiative, and I think it did so pretty well. Definitely not without its flaws, but very enjoyable for what it is. Sherman being announced as the main artist for this book is what really hooked me before release, and they did a great job here. Williamson does a very solid job with the script, as well, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where this goes with a lot of the setup out of the way.

I've been reading LSH since Jim Shooter was a teenager, so my tastes are definitely not in the mainstream of current fandom. Case in point, I thought the art was gaudy and artsy at the expense of clear storytelling.
As for the script, Williamson has set himself a big challenge by revisiting the "Legion as teenage rebels" approach that Mark Waid took so successfully back in 2004. I'm certainly not going to judge his conception on the basis of one issue, much of which was stage-setting, but at least we can tell that he has a big-picture conception to be developed over time, and that's encouraging in itself.
Some random thoughts:

There’s no doubt that this is the Gen Z version of the Legion of Superheroes. Everything looks very soft and light and kinda weird. The boys are very feminine, and the girl is athletic and bossy. I’m pretty sure that somebody will turn out to be trans or non-binary very soon.
While I’m not a fan of Sherman‘s faces - they all look kinda bland - I do like his imaginative layouts. There’s definitely a Moebius influence, although he doesn’t quite capture the realness of the French master.
All in all, I can appreciate all the creativity that went into this reinvention of the Legion. Is it for me though? No. I prefer more traditional superhero books with a more masculine art style.+ Like • Comments (2)• Likes (1) -

Very disappointing. Crap, and gaudy art.
Another attempt to relauch the LSH, which will fail.
Give us back the classic team.
