I've been reading LSH since Jim Shooter was a teenager, so my tastes are definitely not in the mainstream of current fandom. Case in point, I thought the art was gaudy and artsy at the expense of clear storytelling.
As for the script, Williamson has set himself a big challenge by revisiting the "Legion as teenage rebels" approach that Mark Waid took so successfully back in 2004. I'm c
ertainly not going to judge his conception on the basis of one issue, much of which was stage-setting, but at least we can tell that he has a big-picture conception to be developed over time, and that's encouraging in itself.
Some random thoughts:
--“Braniac 1 of 5” is a dumb name.
--Didn’t Brainy already know, or estimate as a 99+% probability, that Brande wore a surveillance suit that would identify the murderer? If so, why bother going to the crime scene first, and why call the case “a good challenge”?
--Brande wrote, “I just feel that being on a world where your every thought is expressed and shared would be very lonely.” Really? Lonely, not claustrophobic??
--Kudos to Williamson for the idea that telepaths communicate in both words and images. I couldn’t make anything of the images shown, but that didn’t bother me---it’s a foreign language, so why should I understand it?
--Having the magno-ball tournament broadcaster go immediately from “Rokk is racing upfield!” to “He’s going to score AGAIN!” was lousy writing—--unless it was good writing about a lousy broadcaster. ;-)
--If I interpreted the art correctly, Rokk pulled metal panels from the stadium to encase himself in a suit of armor--—but what was that supposed to accomplish?? Did he just lose his mind from being fouled again?more
