November 3, 2015

Batgirl #46
December 16, 2015

Not a bad issue, but it's a bit lacking. Like previous issues, Barbara spends most of the time reacting between extremes, and ends up feeling two-dimensional. The book also tries to make a shallow attempt to address gentrification in a hipster neighborhood full of expensive coffee shops.

Batman Hush
October 12, 2021
|
|
I've always said that Hush was a shallow and overrated piece of trash made solely for the lowest common denominator, the type of person who lacks the brainpower to critically dissect a poorly written mystery. Jeph Loeb is in full Ultimatum form here, a hack who depends solely on his name and corporate branding to sell.
Looks like I was proven 100% right, looking at the people who are desperately shilling for this, like the pedophile apologist and his weird parasocial relationship.

|

|
Batman #48
January 20, 2016
|
|
A rather introspective and self-aware issue that questions the value of fleeting tranquility, before racing towards an exciting climax. While this story arc has had a few lulls, there's no doubt that Snyder has managed execute a strong and character-driven story arc out of a status quo that had some shaking their heads.
|
|
|
Batman #49
February 10, 2016

It's a very emotionally heavy issue. The glimpses of future (or Elseworld) Batmans play nicely with the present-day story, and Snyder unexpectedly brings in a Chekov's gun to complete the arc for some meaningful closure.

Batman And Robin Eternal #10

A surprisingly sound character-driven issue that sees Jean-Paul Valley turn over a new leaf, and Jason truly deal with his own death. The latter hasn't seen anything like that in his own series, so it's nice to see this, given that DC has essentially distanced itself away from everything that made pre-N52 Red Hood work.

The opening is a bit contrived, but the interactions between Grayson and Gordon are nice. This feels mainly like a bridge issue to set up the next major beat of the crossover.

A slow issue, but unlike other "slow" issues (see: Wonder Woman), but the plot has been utterly unremarkable. Second issue of this arc, and it's stuck with characters talking about their backgrounds to one another.
And then throw in some Tim/Steph fanservice that seems to be in there just for the sake of pandering to Tim fans.
Seems like Detective Comics just continues to be the "Batman book that's nowhere as good as the main Batman book".

Detective Comics #936
July 13, 2016

A slightly-better-than-mediocre Bat book. There isn't much to this issue outside of a plot twist that was telegraphed well in advance, and makes very little logical sense. Clearly the weakest among the double-shipped Bat books, but not quite terrible. Best treated as a fanservice book.

Some good stuff, some bad stuff here. Most of this issue flowed well, except for the contrived writing that leads to the cliffhanger. The only reason there's any tension to the cliffhanger is because of the rumors of a certain character being killed off. Barrows is back on art, and his work is considerably weaker than Martinez's.

Detective Comics #940
September 14, 2016

In some ways it delivers, but it can't help but hit some really tired cliches. The ending cliffhanger is a mess that brings to the surface the ever-present problem with Big 2 comics: that their individual stories are often getting derailed by the "big picture".

Detective Comics #942

Overall, it's a decent conclusion to an underwhelming crossover that tries to be too many things at once. This issue provides a big bombastic finale but it isn't quite able to find its thematic conclusion. We're better off resuming the storylines of two excellent Batbooks and a decent Detective Comics run.

Dull, and too desperate to parrot manga instead of doing its own thing. This is "we have manga at home" of comics. The fact that Red Hood fanboys are only talking about "feats" and "power levels" shows you the IQ level of who this panders to.

This book is so pointless. It's a boring exposition dump on half-ass pages that DC decided to call "manga-inspired" because they couldn't bother to pay a colorist. Just bad writing all around. I pity the people who have to keep convincing themselves that this is amazing.

A dull issue with god awful narration. There is very little logic in character attitudes, and the series continues to take a "tell, don't show" approach to the Oliver/Dinah relationship. Only propped up by Ferreyra's excellent art. Safe to say this is one of the worse Rebirth series.

Strong issue that fleshes out all of the different characters that will be involved in the Robin War. Some (like Tim and Jason) are better here than in their own series. Duke makes for a strong and relatable protagonist. It's a considerable step up from Batman and Robin Eternal.

|
Robin War #2
January 13, 2016
|
|
Overall, it's a strong finish, despite a few loose ends not being completely addressed. The character arcs for Duke, Damian, and Dick are done very well, with their contrasting viewpoints of what the Robin mantle mean to each character. It does feel a bit rushed at times, with not every plot point from previous issues being fully fleshed out, and the artwork is inconsistent due to all the different artists. Still, it's one of DC's better events, and certainly worth a read (tie-ins notwithstanding).

It's an inventory issue, but it's an issue that nicely captures what this whole book is about. The character interactions are handled well, and Fawkes conveys a firm understanding of who Damian is, and why he's trying to be. The artwork captures the frantic action of the story well enough.

Starfire #8

At its core, this book is slapstick comedy stuffed with visual gags and the occasional sci-fi action, but there's a surprising layer of maturity underneath. What seems like an obvious setup for a love triangle sidesteps the cliched drama, and all characters come out for the better. Differences between the characters' motivations are conveyed clearly without being too heavyhanded.
