My god. This arc actually had some interesting concepts going on, but the art is insulting. This is a top tier character. Marvel's highest of the high A-list characters, and this is the art they settle on? I have a friend who isn't a comic artist and she drew a comic that looked 1000x better than this... for free. Once again the arc as a whole just feels sloppy and unsatisfying, but since it is Spencer he has left plenty of seeds.

I'm glad Nick Spencer acknowledged that Civil War 2 did this already, because I was thinking that during the last arc. This one was pretty good after the last arc, which was pretty much one of the worst arcs of the whole run.

This has to be one of the biggest disappointments to me all year. This reminds me of the 90s' Adam Strange which flips everything you knew about Rann and Sardath on it's head. This in a way retcons the original series so that the whole reason Amy ever goes to Gemworld is for corrupt reasons and it just doesn't add anything, if anything it makes it worse. I do not like Amy Reeder as a writer, idk why that should come as a surprise to me now either after reading her Moongirl.

The second issue is just as packed as the first issue, however the stories are quite a bit more forgettable. The Joker story is great as always, but the stories involving The Crime Master, Clubfoot, and a prehistoric man are easily disposable but still entertaining from a historical perspective.

As someone who loved Tom King's run on Batman and had to be disappointed by the decision he wouldn't get to tell his full Batman story, and honestly I have been very indifferent with Tynion IV's take on him so far... I loved this. The presentation was amazing, from the way the chapters are introduced, to the great looking art and costumes.
I already know a common complaint is going to be how convoluted it seems with all the plots happening at once, but it really is simple. Since it is a Christmas story, remember there is a Past, Present, and Future... kind of like A Christmas Carol. I have no idea if that was intentional.

So let's break it down:
Are the characters likable? No.
Is the story good? Not thus far.
Is the art good? It's average.
Is it really Image's Watchmen? Big no.
Does it pander to general comic fans? Yes.
Is it written like a Netflix pitch? Yes.
Is it really closer to the comic equivalent of Ready Player One? Yes.
I have liked the majority of Donny Cates' work, really only disliked Death of the Inhumans before this, but this one comes off as really amateur and something that anyone in the business could have wrote. In fact Brian K. Vaughan dies in the beginning, and this story actually reminded me of a more mainstream take on his Private Eye concept.

What's to say really? It's the first appearance of Batman ever and right off the bat he is delivered with full confidence. Also beginning now is my murder count for Batman, because he has changed his tune about killing over the years and that part of the character was absent from his early appearances. Murder count: 1. He kills a man by punching him into a chemical vat, and no it isn't the guy who ends up being the Joker.
Interesting historical point of note: Batman wears purple gloves in this issue, much like in Scott Snyder's Year Zero story. The identity of Batman is also not revealed until the last panel. Apex Chemicals.
I am going through every issue of Detective and Batman, and reviewing them. Nobody cares, but if you are a nobody, feel free to follow me. Especially if you are interested in these issues with no intention of ever reading them.

This series was far from perfect, but I do not regret reading it. I was personally happy when I heard the news Dan DiDio was leaving DC. I don't have anything against Dan, but I disagreed with the way he had authority over the characters. In interviews I have always enjoyed hearing from him, he seems likable that way. Anyway, it is very clear Dan DiDio loves the Metal Men. Like *really* loves the Metal Men. He makes some deep cuts and ties this well into main DC continuity, with the inclusion of the Dark Multiverse. While reading this, it is hard not to feel his passion for writing these characters. Dan's enthusiasm for them becomes infectious. At best he has inspired me to read some old Metal Men comics, and that was really Dan DiDio's job from the start... to sell us on comics. Goodbye Dan, I will miss your personality in DC Comics at the very least. DC definitely seems more corporate since they lost that big personality, even if it will be better for the stories in the long run.

I read this because I like Si Spurrier. However it was a bit too ingrained in the saga of Krakoa for me to enjoy. I haven't been keeping up with the rest of the X-men titles, but even then I don't feel like I'm missing much context. The important part seems to be the knowledge that the mutants can be resurrected from a previous point, which I do know. The Patchwork Man is what's new to me. Anyway, I wanted to like it, but I really just didn't. I really don't like the info dump pages from the past Krakoa stories I've read and I was sad to see them still here breaking up the flow of the story. Otherwise it was fine. I do like how the mutants are so desensitized to death now.
