You Don't Read Comics - David Harth

    Oct 29, 2019

Superman #16 is pure entertainment. This is easily the best issue of the series so far. Its funny and poignant, a reunion of two friends that readers have been missing together. Bendis hits all the right notes in this issue. Add to that Jons decision about joining the LoSH, and this issue has it all. David Lafuentes art perfectly compliments Bendis script, making the humor and emotion work so well. This is the kind of comic that can be read over and over again. Its so much fun. Bendis is writing a lot at DC right now, but this issue proves just how amazing a SuperSons book by him would be. Read Full Review

The issue ends with Jon's decision. It's sweet and heartbreaking and wonderful. This is the best work Bendis has done for DC. I do hope he writes more issues like this. It is pretty perfect. Read Full Review

God, what a bittersweet page. That middle panel of Superman standing alone, long shadows conveying some sadness, is just perfect. I loved this issue. As a fan of Super Sons, as a fan of Clark/Jon, as a fan of the Legion, this hit the mark. And the art is perfect for the content. Read Full Review

But Why Tho? - Charles Hartford

    Oct 09, 2019

Superman#16 proves a delightful story of two dear friends and the support they provide each other. After reading this issue, I wish fervently DC Comics would write a possible-future storyline with these two having taken up their fathers' mantles. Just like Batman and Superman, these boys are more than the sum of their parts. Read Full Review

This comic was a fond farewell for the young pair of crime fighters. I'm sure it's not a goodbye, but more of a so long for now situation. There are a lot of worse ways to spend your four dollars, at least here you are getting your money's worth and then some by getting an amazing story, cool art, and a few tears. DAMMIT! Who keeps putting these things on my cheeks?!? Read Full Review

Black Nerd Problems - Brandon Lawrence

I haven't read Superboy and Robin interact in quite a while, but I don't remember enjoying them this much. Wayne was being his normal condescending self, and now I'm curious if they were this warm by the end of that series. The initial reunion was hilarious with Damian losing a point of pride, being a year older than John. I remember when he tried to give him shit about joining the Teen Titans because he wasn't technically a teen yet. After a tense beginning, the two patrol the Gotham night and catch up. It was delightfully reminiscent of catching up with a long distance buddy as a teenager. The two depart after John reveals the plan to spend time in the 31st century with the Legion of Superheroes. He says his final goodbye to his father before heading to check the future out. Read Full Review

Despite my misgivings about the general direction, Superman #16 was still a joy to read. It gives a touching look at Superboy's friendship with Robin and his relationship with his father. And it presents us with the historic event of Superboy setting off for his adventures in the 31st Century with the Legion of Super-Heroes. It's definitely worth reading and adding to your comic collection. Read Full Review

Damian Wayne is sweet as hell this issue and while it feels really wrong........ I actually really liked this portrayal of the character and wish it was normal.  Yeah, there's some heartwarming stuff here, but there's also some things that aren't right as well, but if you can put that aside and are someone who enjoys a more cartoon style of art I think you could really enjoy this issue of Superman.  I know I did, even with all my hangups.  Read Full Review

Did the other users read a different comic than I did? Because I thought this comic was sweet and heartfelt, the first issue of this title I've actually loved. Damian didn't feel particularly off-model to me beyond the way in which Bendis's characters always sound more like Bendis characters than themselves. (And at this point in history if you're the sort of person who reads comic book reviews, you probably know the limits of your tolerance for that.) The only weak spot for me was David LaFuente's art, which is fine but is far less suited to Superman than it was to Ultimate Spider-Man. Still, overall my favorite issue of Bendis's Superman which has otherwise been a disappointment by comparison to his Action Comics. I actually think it's a more

"Why are you so tall?!" It was something between "alright" and "meh". It lacked the usual charm that the two of these youngins accustomed us too and Damian was being super childish. I've always imagined his reaction being something more like "Damn, now he's taller than me" and just going with it, without the freakout, he saw weirder things. And was this really the best art style they could have chosen? If both Damian and Jon were in diapers, then maybe. Gotta say I'm rather disappointed in this one.

I feel I have been more positive of Bendis at DC than most, but this issue failed to land. Coming off a stellar Super Sons run by Tomasi, It's clear Bendis doesn't know Damian Wayne well, as his characterization feels off. The artwork here also didn't do the series any favors.

Dialogue is truly pitiful! Bendis needs to read more on Damian! Art was alright in the beginning but then got so much worse! Do not read!

Prelude: Great. It's Bendis time. Please! Please! Please be good! The Good: I'm always up for more Super Sons and their interactions. The Bad: What the hell am I reading? This art is horrendous. Sorry but it is. Damian's voice is so off right now, which is funny since Bendis got it mostly right in Event Leviathan. On that topic, Bendis-Speak. We already know the outcome of this issue, making it pretty pointless. Conclusion: Welp, Jon is off to an even worse book. Yet, he still can't outrun Bendis. Seriously, why am I reading all this again?

Didn't really like anything about this issue. Damian is written overly sappy and out of character. The reunion was too short, and just reminded me of the decision to end super sons too much. I also didn't like the art, it looked a lot like manga/anime, which is fine for some people, but I'm not really a fan of it.

Whoever decided to let "bendis" write the Super Sons made of the worst decisions I have seen in a title that nothing but. He cannot write Damian at all. The dialogue in this issue is far worse than that in Event Leviathan and that's saying something. It hurt to read this. The change in artist did not do this title any favors.

Terrible art, some of the worst I've seen in a comic in quite some time. Amazingly, the story was possibly worse. DC needs to get Bendis off any of it's major characters.

If I could give this issue a lower score I would. The art is horrendous and the story is incredibly weak. It's a shame because up until 2 issues ago the Superman title was at least readable. -Side note: Has anyone else noticed the glaring discrepancy between "Critic Reviews" and User Reviews? the critics are averaging 8.3 while actual user reviews give the book an average of 3.0 Someone is clearly not being honest here and I doubt it's the user reviewers...Also just giving a numerical score to a book without any explanation isn't an actual review.

Nice reminder of how good Super Sons used to be until DC let Bendis age-up Jon just so he could be in Bendis' new Legion book. Bendis sucks, but that's like a known quantity at this point. DC sucks more for tanking one of their best titles just to accommodate him. I miss Super Sons, is what I'm saying, and this issue was just lemon juice in a paper cut.
