Solid story. I appreciate that it isn't just aping off the second film again like so many Aliens stories do. Art is rough though unfortunately. I'm interested enough to keep going, but Larroca's best work seems to be behind him at this point.

The best issue of the series so far. Aaron nails the arrogance necessary in Marvel's Dracula, introduces cool new villains and builds the team dynamic all in one issue. This arc has been excellent so far and if it keeps it up it could be an all timer Avenger story.

Good stuff, but the art mix is distracting. Would be better if it was just Zaffino, as he's the best of the bunch.

Interesting choice for the Phoenix at least. Not my favorite arc; I dig this book more than most I'd say but this was mostly just some nice looking fights. Blade issue and Heroes Reborn have me pretty excited though, especially the Stokoe issue.

My favorite issue in the series in a while. The Dracula subplot has been the best and this update is super interesting for all parties involved. Echo as Phoenix is promising as well. No idea where Heroes Reborn is gonna go but with the line up of artists I'm ready for the ride.

This is the best comic book being published right now. DWJ needs to be allowed to write and/or draw an arc of Thor proper at some point (hell give him the book when Cates is done.)

Immortal Thor #1
August 23, 2023
|
|
Thor is my favorite Marvel character so I was pretty excited for this. Ewing put a lot of pressure on himself with the name, and I would say the book isn't quite as immediately shockingly good as that firs tissue was. But how could it be? Expectations are there now, whereas Immortal Hulk seemed to come out of almost nowhere.
That's enough for comparisons though because this was really great and probably my favorite Thor number 1 since God of Thunder so it deserves to stand on its own no matter how good the previous titles it draws from were. There's a clear interest in what came before (Matt Fraction's run gets a reference! No one references that anymore!) but its not beholden to the same beats that the book has been about for the past ten years. I think that alone is its greatest strength; as much as I adored the Aaron run (its one of, if not my number one superhero run ever), we don't need another story about worthiness or anything like that.
Art is really strong, and Matt Wilson continues to be the absolute hero to the Thor series. His consistently great work has given all the disparate artists over the years a bit of unity and I can't be more happy to see him continuing on with the book. The Utgard-Thor in particular has this great, different look to its coloring and art that makes it feel like its truly not a part of this world. Hopefully Wilson, Coccolo (this was my first real exposure to his work as I missed a bunch of Banner of War) and Ewing are in it for the long run. The last run had its moments but real life got in the way a lot. This seems like the follow up to Aaron's saga I always wanted; big, new and exciting. Its a great time to be a Thor fan.

My favorite issue of the series thus far. Thor and Storm's battle and discussion was a highlight, and the gathering of the Thors combined with the continued sheer scale and size that Coccolo gives Toranus has me very excited for the upcoming battle. Even better was the teaser at the end; I'm very glad Ewing is writing that character again and can't wait to see what he's cooking with the teased idea. Last few issues were good but slightly dragging their feet; this one feels much more eventful and I can't wait to see what comes next on multiple fronts.

The Fraction run is not necessarily my favorite but I appreciated the pull from it with the Keep in this one. Ending is not where I expected this to go. Ewing really cooked with this arc.

Quite enjoying this series. I figured for sure I'd like the writing as Ram V rules, but the real treat has been the art. This is my first time reading Perkins' work and he's creating some very pretty and scary pages. Very curious to see where this goes from here and I wish it was an ongoing, but any Swamp Thing is good to have.

Ferry was not my favorite Thor artist but I do think he brings a nice dynamism to the violent portions of the book that works pretty well. Here's hoping he has a chance to stick with the book throughout this particular act. Anyway, feels like a slow burn, but I dig it. I happen to enjoy the runs where Thor has a human avatar or form just as much as the crazy high concept stuff, so leaning so heavily into this aspect after the book has largely been about the opposite since the start of the Jason Aaron run is a nice change of pace.
