With the tone that was set with Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon and Captain America, combined with the amazing art skills of this creative team, it was hard to think this would be anything other than a great issue. This creative team delivered, ensuring a solid launch to this earth shaking series. Read Full Review

Chip Zdarsky is penning an absolute masterpiece of a story. This issue and the whole series needs to be at the top of your reading list because it truly feels like the start of a can’t miss event. Read Full Review

    KPB Comics - Phillip Creary

Avengers: Armageddon #1 is an incredibly solid debut. Sure, it spends a significant amount of time setting up the chess pieces, but that’s exactly what a first issue is supposed to do. The foundational pieces are right where they need to be, the roster is killer, and the art team brings a massive sense of scale back to the book. After months of feeling totally disconnected from the main Avengers title, I’m happy to say we are so back. Read Full Review

Avengers Armageddon #1 is a fairly standard start to these Marvel “Summer Blockbuster” events. Most of this issue is just set up for what we will see further into the series, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Hopefully, this will be the start of Marvel getting back on track. Comic Book Revolution - Kevin Lainez

    Jun 10, 2026

Avengers: Armageddon #1 delivers exactly what it needed to drive home its message of this being a big event. It is far from perfect due to the continuity heavy nature of what led to this event. But even with that Chip Zdarsky, Delio Diaz, and Frank Alpizar make sure the reader focuses on why the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men must stop Red Hulk and his new group. The stakes are high and it’s clear the Marvel Universe will be different when all is said and done. Read Full Review

Super Hero Hype - Matt Morrison

    Jun 10, 2026

Avengers: Armageddon #1 is a tepid start to what promised to be a hot event. Unfortunately, this first chapter does very little to distinguish itself from earlier Marvel crossovers. Thankfully, enough is done right to encourage the hope that it might build momentum as the story continues. Read Full Review

    Comical Opinions - Gabriel Hernandez

    Jun 10, 2026

Avengers: Armageddon #1 assembles a new-ish team (against the wishes of the United Nations) to stop the Red Hulk from taking over the world. Chip Zdarsky’s story construction is adequate, and the art team makes the most of an all-dialogue issue. That said, there’s no surprise, no originality, and it feels like we’re replaying One World Under Doom all over again. That’s not a positive. Read Full Review

    Plot
To stay up-to-date with the key events, it's a good idea to read the current Captain America saga and the Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon miniseries.

General Ross/Red Hulk, with the help of his Gamma-powered soldiers, has seized Doomstadt and, consequently, all of Latveria. He calls it the "DEMOCRACY CITY of NEW AMERICA," essentially creating a new nation, with the goal of doing the same in neighboring countries like Symkaria.

The Secretary of the United Nations, Mrs. Riani, orders Reed Richards to keep all heroes out of the situation, stating that superhuman activities are the primary cause of all this chaos.

The Fantastic Four, Sam Wilson, Captain Marvel, Vision, Namor, Spider-Man, and Iron Man meet to more

    Astonishingly Awful

    Jun 10, 2026

This wasn’t bad for a first chapter, although I’m having some ethical problems with the entitlement and self-righteousness displayed by the heroes in this book. Anyway, I’m glad Dave Colton is returning - I really enjoyed him in Captain America - and apparently missed his appearance in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, a series I considered skippable, but looks like I shouldn’t have.
The art by Diaz and Alpizar is not quite classic Marvel crossover excellence, but pretty close. This is what superheroes should look like! Give him another year, and Diaz will probably be Marvel‘s brightest star.
