Can you really separate the concept from the story? The cover is explicitly playing with the concept, and the fact that those are alternative "Spider-Men" matters to the story. You can't just take them out and have the same story. I also mentioned the art, that I don't like.

I guess the only aspect I left out because I wanted to keep it short and focused on my main issues, is Osborn as Spider-Man. I don't think it's a particularly great idea, but it gives us the opportunity for the cosmic Spider-Man stories drawn by Pepe Larraz, which are much more interesting to me. It's a shame that the series cannot focus on one storyline and one artist.

She would’ve never left Peter for a guy like Paul and all the dumb crap in that run was character assassination. When I ACTUALLY read the issue that explained MJ's bond to Paul, being trapped in an alternate dimension for FOUR YEARS as the only two people on that Earth and adopting two children, that would really make a whole lot of sense. She can have a bond with another person. MJ has dated many people. She almost divorced Peter. Twice. This isn't out of the ordinary. This is also very realistic. She thought she was stuck, again for YEARS. Incels really need to get over the Paul thing.

You don’t know who MJ is for one she would’ve waited for Peter as for the stuck thing Paul is the one who made the device so if she felt like Peter would never comeback which is proof already this isn’t how she would be she could’ve asked him to make another device. Second Paul helped kill people in his world so MJ choosing to be with him makes her look stupid especially over Peter. Third she gave up on Peter super fast it hadn’t even been a full year and she already gave up on him.

Also they did not almost divorce twice they separated because she needed time because she had recently been kidnapped but hell she didn’t give up on Peter then or fall in love with her captor so more proof current MJ is out of character but when they were separated for a couple of years neither of them dated anyone else because they were miserable without each other and they came back to each other. So yeah it is out of character for MJ.

You should really go back and read some 90s and 2000s era Spider-Man stuff. Their marriage was constantly rocky. They separated multiple times. Peter was with other women while MJ was presumed dead. Yes usually a book might drop after the first issue but if the series is good they tend to actually stay in the higher rankings when a book is dropping from the top to the bottom isn’t really a good sign. People have unrealistic expectations for Spider-Man (and Batman) that really can never be fulfilled for two reasons. They don't know what they actually want, and the time they are trying to go back to isn't possible. That's also not to say that the period they remember was actually objectively good or not. If people really wanted to make a statement, stop buying. Buy Ultimate, really and truly speak with their wallets. Otherwise, stfu. These are comic books after all.

The target demographic is still children and "fans" of these superhero characters continually show how they never grew up to realize that. One can enjoy something as an adult that is still targeted at kids and not be unbelievably critical. It's honestly why I stopped reading the last arc of Spider-Man. I don't want to bash this character that means so much to me so I took a break to read old stuff. But that doesn't mean I want that old stuff in what we have now because it's not new.

What a logical and measured approach. I admire your stance. I stopped reading mainline Spider-man many times. The flux in appeal is so variable but you're right. It's kids/teen media and most of the folk on here crying about it are grown men. Crazy when you really think about it. Like you say though, a considered goal by writers could be to have the quality or theme appeal to all ages - but with the variance of thought in society - then factoring age and life experience, makes it challenging.

To piggyback off what you guys are saying: Personally for me I think a lot of people tend to compare previous run on what makes a comic book run "good", and that is really not fair. For me personally, I don't like to do that because that's not how to review an issue or a run. I look for pacing, good/consistent art, solid dialogue, action, coloring, story, and good writing for characters. And if people don't like the current/new series, then they can just not read this to get pissed off.

Who knew that if you stopped reading books that you get mad, you'll be happier than life? For me personally Spider-Man ended right after Dan Slott finished his run. Because for me, I was not a fan of Nick Spencer or Zeb Wells run. Who knows, maybe once Joe Kelly finishes this run and people praise it, I'll go back and read it. For now, I just like to read books that I enjoy.
