The story continues but I feel like there are very few answers or revelations taking place to help us understand what's going on and why. We do get a reveal of the villain behind it all, but it lands with a thud. There's no dramatic tension, there are a lot of characters and story threads in motion, and through it all, I feel very little. This comes as quite a surprise considering how much I love more
JSA #16
As our heroes converge on Starco in Gotham City, the villain pulling all the strings is finally revealed!
A strong finale to an enjoyable mini-series that was in several ways better than the main DC KO series. Seeing Bruce come to realize what his extended family means to him but also why he matters to them results in genuine heartfelt emotion with high stakes. As for the art, what can be said about Dan Mora that hasn't been said already by now, The man is a master at the peak of his powers! Paired wi more
DC K.O.: Knightfight #4
Bruce Wayne became Batman to strike terror into the hearts of criminals, but he never imagined a world where Gotham City would be so safe it no longer needs its Caped Crusader. But when he arrives in a Gotham where Damian achieved that very peace, will Bruce destroy everything his son has built to overcome the Heart of Apokolips's test and re-enter...
This book frustrates me. The last 2 issues with Goldface were quite good, but this issue takes a downturn. Ewing seems to take strange delight in deliberately not providing any answers as to what's going on either on Earth or in outer space. Almost a full year in and we know very little about the lantern corps, what Hammond is up to, and I don't feel very invested in the characters. Another prob more
Absolute Green Lantern #11
Jo Mullein is on the run! Can she get to the bottom of who is after her and how they keep tracking her location before it's too late?
This issue was very good, but filled with too much exposition for my taste. I'm intrigued by the Luthor/Braniac subplot that will no doubt keep building until it boils over. We also get a hint of the Parasite, some more Peacemaker/Lazarus shenanigans, and of course, the punch-filled introduction to Hawkman. Payoffs down the road should be amazing, but for now, this issue felt like it was busy se more
Absolute Superman #16
Superman finds himself at the forefront of a bold new age of heroes in the Absolute Universe, but he quickly learns that he wasn't the world's first super-powered protector. Enter Hawkman, who has a few tips for the new kid, whether he wants to hear them or not!
This book keeps getting better and better each month, it's now my favorite regular DCU book. Fraction is skilled at balancing multiple storylines and also with good character development, in addition to the requisite action. His characters act and talk like real people. Bruce is not the Morrison Uber-Bat here, thankfully. He's more human, flawed, humorous and relatable, which we haven't seen in more
Batman #6
After he survives the date night from hell, the long night isn't over for Bruce Wayne. While he juggles multiple needs as Bruce, Hugo Strange's Monster Men at- tack a petrochemical facility and force Batman into action. Gotham City becomes a powder keg as superstars Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez continue their acclaimed run on the Caped Crusader...
I'm starting to get the feeling that Waid is running on fumes as far as DC KO crossovers are concerned. His Flash storyline in that book remains very good, but this month's JLU chapter is underwhelming. The time-lost variant heroes all finally die heroic but meaningless deaths in ways that made me feel nothing. We get a bizarre proposal from Mr. Terrific with Neron, and it's hard to say whether he more
Justice League Unlimited #15
The plot Neron set in motion is revealed at last-and the consequences will spell the end of heroism on planet Earth! As powered-up villains ravage what's left of the planet, the Terrific Ten is whittled down to a handful of survivors who can't possibly withstand the fires of Hell!
Something is wrong with this book, and since Adams is usually a very strong, talented writer and has a great track record with both of these characters, I'm genuinely baffled by what's transpiring the last few months in this title. Ever since Adams restored the GL Corps to full strength, the title has floundered. I feel like he's simply killing time until issue 600 with this "Hal is upset by the more
Green Lantern #31
Barry Allen is wanted dead or alive, but they'll have to get through Green Lantern first! As Hal continues his investigation into the mysterious (and deadly?) new chapter in the book of Oa, the trail leads to Central City and old pal Barry Allen! The boys in red and green team up to tackle a duo-mystery that will test their trust, their friendship,...
While it's still living and breathing in the DC KO storyline, it's also a very much self-contained issue focusing on the Superman robots, Lois and Superboy Prime, whom Williamson has managed to reshape into a very interesting, compelling and unpredictable character once again. The storyline also takes us back to the Time Trapper on the JLU satellite, where new KO-related shenanigans ensue. Willia more
Superman #34
Darkseid's plan worked! Earth has been transformed into Apokolips. His Dark Legion prepares the Earth for his imminent arrival. If Superman is locked in the tournament, who can stand up and defeat them?
This issue, while very good, didn't seem to move the story forward very much until the last page or two. There seemed to be more psychological angst than usual this month, though I did enjoy the scenes that unfolded as the Martian and John seemed to take a break from one another for a sizeable portion of the issue. The mysterious government folks who showed up at the end of the last issue return t more
Absolute Martian Manhunter #8
Something weird(er) is happening in the town of Middleton, and John Jones is in no mental capacity to handle it. Dealing with a splitting city, a marital split, and a splitting hangover, what happens when he splits from the Martian? Like all breakups, John and the Martian find out what it feels like to be even more alone...and who might be waiting ...
The storyline about the race to save Barry's transformation in the past comes to a boil, with timely assistance from Wally and especially Impulse, who undergoes a bit of a mysterious transformation that has left me a tad confused. No matter, as we are off once again to save the future in a different point in the past in the big finale next issue. To miss it would be a crisis! This issue's thrilli more
Flash #29
The Dark Legion chase the Flash and Impulse to a pivotal moment in Flash history: the moment when Barry Allen was struck by lightning!
A bit of a comedown from the last couple issues, this is still an exciting read as we learn the origin of the Lion, and of course it has a Bruce Wayne connection. The no-fear plague begins to sweep the city and Batman begins to question himself more as the plague takes hold. Not quite the thrill ride as before, but it sets up an exciting finale to come.
Detective Comics #1105
With mere hours to go before Batman's mind and body are destroyed by the Lion's anti-fear virus, Batman takes drastic measures and seals himself inside an airtight suit to keep those around him safe while continuing his desperate search for a cure. But with the virus already taking hold and Batman's fears melting away, the world will soon see how d...
The momentum slows somewhat this issue in favor of a protracted attack sequence in the Fort Fox lab, running in parallel with Wally's journey into a Speed Force-like dimension. Still a great read with lots of excitement, but no resolution and a few unexplained plot jumps.
Absolute Flash #11
Wally finds himself pulled into the mysterious dimension that Barry was trying to access. But how can he escape and make it back to Fort Fox and save his father?
For the first time since the inaugural storyline, Diana seems to be up against a villain that is truly her ultimate match. Great character work as always is mixed with drama, suspense and action as the subplot with Cale enters a new, more dire phase. Between this issue and this week's Absolute Batman 16 featuring Diana, it's a fantastic week to be an Absolute Wonder Woman fan!
Absolute Wonder Woman #16
The Season of the Witch arc begins here! After her exploits in the Area 41 maze, Diana has resolved to not let her personal mission overwhelm the one she was sent to the surface world to fulfill. But a new threat has emerged in Gateway City, and it turns out the best thing to send to kill Wonder Woman is...another witch! Zatanna is here, and Diana'...
Hands down my favorite issue so far, and that comes following 2 prior perfect issues, but this one lands in its own tier of perfection. This issue deftly balances a perfect mix of action and adventure, meaningful and heartfelt character development for the whole cast of characters, sly humor, pathos, and empathy, along with an air of mystery. Dragotta delivers his finest artwork yet. Each page is more
Absolute Batman #16
Part two of our Absolute Batman/Absolute Wonder Woman story- Bruce Wayne is on a desperate hunt to help his friend Waylon, now transformed into a monstrous crocodile roaming the sewers, consumed with a deadly hunger. Batman's last option for a cure is to turn to a god for help...but will he have to descend into the depths of hell to get it?
This book has been on a steady downward spiral for me after its first few issues. This issue was by far my least favorite. A borderline incoherent story with Saturday morning cartoon-style artwork, a villain whose plans barely make any sense, and a Jon Kent subplot that is teased and then disappears, all add up to a nothing-burger for me. ACTION and SUPERMAN are fantastic, but this book really has more
Superman Unlimited #9
Mayor Perry White has seen some major threats impact Metropolis over the years -but even the bulldog of city hall is unprepared for a murderous rampage by... the all-new Prankster?! Superman's now in a race against time to save his friend from a truly sick and twisted death! Do not miss this one. This is the story that will redefine the Prankster a...
Big improvement over Hampton's first few solo writing issues. The characters all seem to have important things to do and that Larfleeze was a real threat instead of a joke. More issues like this one, please.
Green Lantern Corps #12
Tensions between the Lanterns on Oa boil over, and the fate of the Tanagarian refugees is in the balance! Meanwhile, Enquar continues to build his army, and Guy Gardner and Kilowog's trainees are in their eerie blue sights!
This book has become one of the very best monthly books that DC currently publishes, thanks to legendary writer Mark Waid, who is in effect writing "Superboy: Year One" here. Each issue explores a new facet to Clark and how he interacts with, and learns from, the world around him. This issue was another outstanding example. To have both ACTION and SUPERMAN in the hands of such talented storytelle more
Action Comics #1094
As Superboy is called for his first mission for General Lane, Clark wonders if he made the right decision. As the tension builds, the U.S. government prepares a contingency plan that could put our hero down for good. Plus, Pete Ross has a secret-one he's reluctant to share with his best friend.
Great Superman character work, some bizarre tag team partner choices, nice action, and some nostalgia tossed in all add up to the best chapter yet that finishes with an Absolute knockout cliffhanger!
DC K.O. #3
IT'S TAG-TEAM TIME! As the Omega Tournament reaches its endgame, the final eight combatants are put to the ultimate test-confronted with a decades-long stay in their own personal hell! Emotions run high as heroes falter, villains revel, and the Heart of Apokolips eyes its new King Omega. In the end, only the final four will remain...
Best issue yet, with excellent characterizations, clever twists, and a nice twist at the end! Williamson and Mora are a dream team!
DC K.O.: Knightfight #3
All-star creators Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora deliver the next pulse-pounding chapter of Batman's journey during DC K.O., giving us the Dark Knight's greatest challenge yet. Jason Todd is Batman. Tim Drake is Batman. And to complete his mission, Bruce Wayne will have to fight both of them. The former Robins aren't giving up without a fight, and ...

But more importantly, there's work to be done, as we experience a day in the life of the world's busiest superhero-and welcome guest artist Juan Ferreyra (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to the series!
