But Why Tho? - William J. Jackson
Jan 01, 1970Nightwing 2021 Annual #1 is definitely worth the money and time. Nightwing is in top form; Red Hood is grim yet on the move forward. It feels like there's no stopping at this point like we're headed for a better set of Bat heroes and perhaps a better Gotham. Get this one for your Bat collection. Heck, get it even if you're not a DC fan. It's just plain great reading. Read Full Review

Dec 01, 2021If you haven't been reading Nightwing and don't want to wait for the Volume 1 TP Leaping into the Light that comes out later this month, this annual is a good place to jump in and see what you've been missing. Dec 01, 2021This issue is beautifully done. The detailed artwork is filled with bold colors, and places emphasis on character expression and form. These factors allow the illustrations to visually represent the tone of the tale, and the action-oriented panels are really draw you into the story. Dec 03, 2021But we also got hands in this annual. A lot of hands. Nov 30, 2021Nightwing 2021 Annual #1 is a solid, if a little unsurprising, tale of brotherly love against the high stakes of crime and murder in Gotham City. The two different art styles perfectly fit the two time periods on display here and Taylor's script effectively tugs at the heartstrings for anyone invested in these characters. Nonetheless, the core mystery is a little limp, and the ending moments don't quite nail some of the nuances at play between being a crime fighter and a violent vigilante. Read Full Review

10/10 no doubt about it. Tom Taylor’s Nightwing FINALLY made it out of tie in hell, and came out the other side shining brighter than any bat fam book. An exciting ride from start to finish with stellar art, and scenes that will tug at your heart strings. Buy this book.

Proof that we need a Nightwing/Red Hood team-up series. This issue was a fantastic representation of the brotherly relationship between Dick & Jason, and I hope we see more of this beyond just this issue.

The Nightwing Red Hood team-up was great, both in the past and in the present. It's one of the first times they actually felt like brothers in forever, and it seems like there is a lot more to explore in their dynamics. It was a very good issue and I hope we could see more of their team-ups in the future.

Cool ! This is the first word that comes to mind when I have finished reading this annual. Nightwing and Red Hood make the pair. The plot (who is the culprit?) Is only a pretext which serves to reconnect the thread between the two characters, at the same time brothers and competitor. It's fresh, fun and funny. A little action, humor, brotherhood and an appearance from Alfred (never free). I had a good time. This is also reading. Just have a great time.

A cool issue, with great action and a great good cop-bad cop story (but Jason isn't so bad cop, anymore. He's more like a angry cop now). I liked the interaction between Dick and Jason in the past, all that brothers talk. I kmow is a retcon, but worked for me. I don't see why they can't be brothers (or at least friends) being both from the Bat Family. The villains are generic, but okay to a one-issue story. And I like Clayface, so it's cool to see him again. I liked the arts, but I really hate this new costume that Red Hood is using.

Ok so this was a pretty decent one. It wasn't as good as the Lobdell annual from RHATO during Rebirth but it was still pretty good. I especially liked the flashbacks and the way the relationship between Dick and Jason was portrayed. Though it does put both of them, especially Dick, in a better light. A lot of people remember that Jason had an inferiority complex towards Dick and he did, but they forget that Dick really didn't receive well the news that he has been replaced. All the same, I enjoyed the art from the flashbacks a lot and the writing is pretty decent on that part if you ignore the part where Taylor plays favorites. The modern day story is decent, too. The art is serviceable, but nothing great and the way Taylor endorses the dro pping the guns thing is both ideologically motivated and stupid. Jason looks dumb with those crowbars. And the "explanation" that he uses the crowbar for the same reason Bruce dresses up as Batman... yeah, that's just facepalm, it's laughable. In the modern day story, Jason is yet again made dumber just so Dick can look good. They're battling Clayface, two panels later Clayface molds himself into Batman yet Jason supposedly buys that's Batman. Yeah, no one is really that dumb. When a writer deliberately dumbs down a character to make his pet character smarter, that's a sign of bad writing. Overall though, given this horrible and obnoxious run, I'd say this is the best issue yet. Less hating on the rich and capitalism, more bonding between brothers. This is really better. I'm sure Taylor will waste no time to disappoint me yet again next issue. more

SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 1, 2021Excellent review as always, I do not know why Taylor tried a little more in this, but he is still doing a mediocre writing I do not know why, his Unkillables I liked to the degree to acquire them.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 1, 2021This new way of looking for new consumers discarding the ones they had. I don't know if it's really working for them, it all feels so boring. I recognize it, I am a person who likes the canon, there are great ideas out there, and the writers know it to the degree that they over-write in past stories saying that it is new, and I think that is what they try, I am aware that my generation has weak eyesight. , crying and easy to manipulate.
Merlyn - Dec 1, 2021I wasn't a huge fan of the way he used Jason in the DCeased book. He basically "fridged" him after Unkillables. I have a feeling he's not a huge fan of Jason Todd but he does get some aspects of the character and I can appreciate that. What I don't like is how he plays favorites here. I expect the book to get back to its shitty quality sooner rather than later but this one I liked. There is un upcoming meeting between Nightwing and Jon Kent. Oh boy, will that be a massive dumspter fire.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 1, 2021Taylor fan of Jason? nah I think he took it out in the annual to attract fans, in a comment on twitter they rubbed him why he had put Bruce as a toxic father, making comparisons about Dick, which neither this person nor I remember happened in the canon, I think that's more of the fics like scars. Let's see if he doesn't block it because Taylor is a bit intolerant of criticism.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 1, 2021More now that it is fashionable to be an immature idiot who does not recognize that a bad job was done and actors, directors, etc., take to blame the consumer. That is complete idiocy, I was determined to see the Eternals but when I read Kumail's statements, I decided not to, I saw it for free.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 1, 2021The same happened with the last duel, I love vintage and medieval movies, but when I read that they presented it as a feminist film, no matter how womanly I am. No thanks to the top of toxic feminism and all extreme progress. I am a very foolish woman, if I were a tree it would cause problems, so if someone wants to force me to do something, I simply do the opposite, as long as it does not go against my principles.
Merlyn - Dec 1, 2021What did Kumail say? I know he annoyed a lot of people but I didn't follow the news. Honestly I never found the guy funny so I just don't care about what he has to say. I heard about The Last Duel, I'm not even thinking of watching that. We are in a stage when entertainment is fully ideological and until people don't speak up against it, it won't get better. And it will get a lot worse before it gets better, if it ever gets better.

Decent book. Taylor does write Nightwing really well but like with a lot of authors now doesn’t really follow canon all that well which hurts the overall product. If you remove that then the book is pretty good but for me it pulls me out way to much. But if you can get over that hurdle then you will find enjoyment on this.

I haven't enjoyed Redondo's overly clean and to me pretty flat art on the main Nightwing title, even if I can admit he draws an aesthetically pleasing Dick Grayson, which means I enjoy seeing Dick drawn by Daniel HDR and Cian Tormey. They bring a sense of gravitas to the movements of the characters that has been missing. Rian Beredo and John Kalisz colors enhance the inks with gritty and lively colors depending on the time in Jason's and Dick's life the Issue is focusing on. While I was surprised that I enjoyed the beginning of the story, (I've admitted before that Taylor's characterization and voice of Dick Grayson isn't for me) the longer the story went on, the more it became lacking. There is a conflict but barely any tension. Jason i sn't allowed to go batshit crazy in his anger for more than two panels and Dick reacts as if he is about to fall asleep beside him. Also, could someone please stop using Clayface for every "stolen face" story? It's getting extremely boring. There are more characters with that skill set all over the DCU. (Though Hush wouldn't have been better.) I already sighed when I read "between Redondo and Lucas" but then I had to find out that Bylsma isn't a Red Hood or Robin Jason villain but someone else associated with Taylor and it was time to quietly close this Annual for me. Despite that, I enjoyed the art a lot. more

It feels like Red Hood is Nightwing's side kick. Tom Taylor wrote an excellent characterization for Jason Todd in DCeased:Unkillables (in my opinion) but in this story Jason feels less interesting. A lot has happened to the character in the main DC continuity which in many ways has matured the character, making him less violent, so I understand the difference between the portayls. With that being said this doesn't feel like the same Red Hood you'd see in Task Force Z or Urban Legends right now. Yes I know this is a Nightwing annual, I am aware of that, I am also aware that as the main character is character he "should" be more prominent. My only problem with that is Nightwing had an appearance in the Annual #1 of "Red Hood And The Outlaws R ebirth" and I enjoyed the Jason & Dick dynamic more in that issue. I wanted to love this issue because I'm a massive Red Hood fan but I just didn't. obviously I am extremely bias, I'll own that fact since the only reason I read the issue was because Hood's in it but unfortunately it just wasn't for me. P.S the Art was pretty good and I'd still recommend the issue to others. more

A complete fanfiction of Dick Grayson's hits, it wasn't that bad in action but completely inconsistent with canon and childishly written. It's something I wouldn't buy no matter how much Red Hood comes out. There are too many cliches and nothing that can surprise, completely predictable the story at the moment that dazzles a protected witness and agents of the fbi. Taylor is so bad at making a real impact, as I said a very childish and random writing in this issue. The art is decent, the story is mediocre however notas mediocre from what I've read this year, that's why I'm being nice in rating.

This was moderately decent compared to this man has been doing, it's still quite the ridiculous fluffy numer. The only thing I am grateful for was that he stopped putting in so many nonsensical character cameos and down with his left politics a bit and thanks for not being excessive in jokes, this time they were well placed. It was obvious that Jason's guns were not returned (and now with the case of poor boy Kyle Rittenhouse who was forced to defend his life). Otherwise nothing to get excited about, completely predictable, even though I wear it in a decent way to catch Red Hood fans, but I won't buy his book, that's for sure. It is curious that someone who does not read Red Hood or Jason because he has said it in endless comments ma king reviews of where Jason comes from, now come to say that he is well characterized when we all know that Robin-Jason in his beginnings was a nice Robin, until some writers decided to pee on him which continues to this day, including Chip's idiotic conclusions to hint that he might have murdered a man in his childhood. Dick and Jason were never close, Dick himself has acknowledged that he was not a good older brother in the previous comics, he is more of an absent brother. Although it was not a bad relationship, I never liked was the way some writers put Dick being so hypocritical and bad mouthing Jason behind his back and even when he died. Therefore it does not make much sense to see Dick playing good brother and Jason talking about his private life. I also do not understand the stupidity of calling to Jason Robin, I just need to say little wing for this to be a fanfiction, HA! I think he gave up on that. I feel sorry for the little person desperate for attention who looks at imaginary enemies. I think they should change their schizophrenia medicine. more

Merlyn - Nov 30, 2021Now he pretends that's not him, when that's definitely him, you can see how he's got that insane hate boner for Red Hood and Lobdell. SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 1, 2021Meet this or these people in person must be a hell, them intolerant that like a rapist they do not know how to respect the word NO. They speak of diversity when they do not tolerate other thinking than their own. My recommendation as always, do not feed the Troll, it hurts them to be ignored, mentioned, throw tantrums on the ground, crawl and cry, but in the end they are affected by what you say.
