Comic Watch - Dustin Gebel
Feb 21, 2024Checchettos art elevates and refines these various elements through deliberately clumsy action and pure warmth in expressions. Paired with Wilsons coloring, which subverts visual expectations while grounding the specific beats into adjacent tones, the art proves what top-tier talent brings to a flagship title. Ultimate Spider-Man #2 is proof the debut issue was not a fluke and there is a level of care and craft that fosters true innovation for the webhead and his supporting cast. Anyone lingering with doubts about this book should jump on this train now, as it shapes up to be quite possibly the defining Spider-Man story of the decade. Read Full Review

Feb 28, 2024Final Thoughts If issue 1 was a prequel, this is Day 1. Peter is still getting used to his powers, hes already lost twice, and Spider-man still has no real identity. Thats bound to change in the upcoming issues. Wilson Fisk is set to take charge, the Goblin is just ramping up his attacks, and Jonah and Ben are very quickly becoming the heart of the book. I cant wait another month. Out of the two books in the line so far, this is the one to beat. Read Full Review

Feb 21, 2024Ultimate Spider-Man #2 is a wonderful follow-up to the stand-out debut of this series. Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto nail the story of an older Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man. What that means for Peter and those around him provides plenty of potential to play off from. That is shown throughout this issue, building a comic book you are excited to see how it continues in the future. Read Full Review

Feb 21, 2024Ultimate Spider-Man #2 is a fantastic second issue. If you were excited by the first, the second is sure to amp all of that up. Feb 21, 2024Ultimate Spider-Man #2 significantly improves over the first issue by putting more focus on Peter Parker as he tries, fails, and tries again to figure out how to be a superhero. Hickman wisely balances the wonder of a person getting superpowers with the maturity of an older man who thinks before he acts. That said, the second draw of this series is the Parker family and they still aren't given much exposure or anything to do, which is a bummer. Read Full Review

Plot Peter Parker enjoys his new secret identity and at night he takes advantage to learn how to use his spdoeres and help the community with this new nanotechnology suit that is currently all black, it begins to appear in the Daily Bugle thanks to the photos of Peter. May, Peter's daughter, doesn't like that suit and she is afraid of this vigilante. On the other hand, Ben and JJ Jameson discuss the current situation in the city, where Kingpin, as the owner of The Bugle, hides that he has received several attacks from a masked person, who apparently is the new Gree Goblin. This comic shows Peter's trial-and-error learning process as a 35-year-old Spider-man, where his innocence is taken advantage of by Shocker, whose new design is am azing. The comedy approach of this new Spider-man is based on the learning process of a millennial. Peter is careless and his daughter May discovers it, but they both keep the secret and set out to redesign the suit. This new series gives a magnificent creative twist to the Spider-man universe, each new series delves into a plot that is as fresh as it is well-known. Art It is loaded with great details that explode in your face supported by subtle and well-placed textures, which gives a raw and powerful tone to this story that shakes up and gives a realistic twist to Spider-man. Summary Peter Parker learns to use his powers through more mistakes than successes, while a threat in the city grows and is covered by the Daily Bugle's new journalistic guidelines. more

This was great. This is exactly the type of Spider-Man book that the fans have wanted for over a decade. I love Peters family dynamics, and the art is fantastic! The build up of Kingpin and the Green Goblin is also good and keeps me wanting more. Even the Shocker was given his own unique personality and had a fun introduction. Ben and Jonah's relationship continues to be a surprising highlight as well. The only thing that concerns me is the lack of spider-sense, but hopefully Pete develops that soon.

Hickman and Checcetto are as near a perfect match as Zdarsky was. All three master storytellers in their fields. Checcetto really understands Hickman's pace. Fluid and graceful in dynamic or humorous scenes, rigid and dark when it needs to be in tense or sincere moments. I couldn't be happier with how these first two issues have been. I remember talking to some friends about what projects people would like to see Hickman on and a lot of them said ASM. I was pretty against that. Not because I dislike Hickman, I think he's one of the greatest writers of our generation. I didn't think he would fit because ASM has a much different voice and direction that I am not sure Hickman would slot into or conform to that structure. Which is a good thing. He does what HE wants and makes the stories pop against the other titles. USM has been exactly what was needed to put him on Spider-Man because the few times we've seen him dip into the well of Peter Parker it was always amazing. Now, ultimate. more

Ok this is probably too high of a rating for this issue, but it got me in the soft spot. May helping be Peters inspiration for changing the costume cause it scares her? Got me tearing up a bit with a big old smile. The banter between Ben and Jonah is great. I legit love it. There is so much in this new world to explore with the character relationships. I also really enjoy Peter exploring the question, do I need to be the same Spiderman that I was suppose to be? I hope that answer is a clear no with him becoming his own unique version. Lastly, I chuckled at Peter and the Shocker. Great moment. Everything has been said by the other comments. This is a great series giving readers what they have wanted for over a decade. A married older Peter with adorable kids and an amazing Mary Jane. more

A strong second issue that sees Peter learning how to be a hero. And he's pretty bad at this right now. But hes learning. The JJ and Ben stuff didn't really go anywhere this issue. The Kingpin stuff was cool. But the main drive of this issue is Peter's story, and how he's doing something he should've done ages ago but now late. Hes a little too self aware of that, and he was also a little too trusting of Tony's message, but I get it. Hes kinda a dolt; bumbling through life and now will have to learn everything... hoe to use this power and how to be responsible with it. That final line was also hilarious. These folks at marvel know EXACTLY what they're doing and I love it.

A surprisingly straightforward issue delivering exactly what the book appears to promise. Fantastic art. I can't really find anything meaningful to complain about. The villains are a little wooden and does Peter not have spider-sense? In any case, this is certainly the most interesting spider book at the moment.

Two-for-two on great issues. This didn't quite pack the same punch as Issue 1, but I didn't expect it to and it didn't even necessarily need to. I thought this was a super fun first adventure, of sorts, for Peter in this universe. I think it was filled to the brim with great writing and character interactions, specifically. Plus, Checchetto kills it again here to the surprise of absolutely nobody.

Near perfect issue. Is is world breaking or mind blowing? No but just like when you're fasting in the summer and haven't had water for 18 hours, water tastes like the best thing you've ever had in your life. This comic book delivers on what we all wanted albeit from a different angle but it ticks all the boxes and I had a smile on my face the whole time. I even chuckled on that last panel with Peter saying that line. It was mm mmm chef's kiss from Hickman and Checchetto on art is beyond beautiful. Seriously, his Spidey is top ten all time. Top him with Wilson's subdued hues that only highlight what's important and we have a near perfect outing. I can see a turn coming at some point but for now I'm all in and twice on Wednesday. P.S. does he not have a Spidey Sense or am I missing something? more

Another thumbs up issue. This series is off to such an entertaining start. It's interesting to see the first in Peter's family to learn his identity is his daughter. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this will probably only help them grow closer. I'd like them to keep it a secret to themselves for the time being. I'd say little May is already developing into a promising original character. Hopefully in time Richard may too. I think it will also be interesting as well seeing father and daughter keep this secret from their own family for now. One thing though, if little May was afraid of Spider-Man in black now, just wait till this reality's Venom shows up (And that's inevitable, just a question of when). I enjoyed the Shocker's debut a s Spidey's first supervillain and it was a hilarious first two encounters. Let's see how encounter 3 goes. Many notice his lack of Spidey sense, which should have been triggered several times this issue alone. There are 2 possibilities. One, He has yet to develop some of his abilities, or 2, The spider wasn't 100% perfect and some of the powers he was supposed to develop are missing (and if that's the case he may over time discover a couple of new original ones no other Spidey before has had; And I admit that would be pretty cool). It seems Wilson Fisk is the villain he always is at heart, but here he is still having to answer to others. Something our Kingpin never does. But like him odds are that won't last. I look forward to seeing him climb in status to becoming the Kingpin (yet another inevitable thing). Then there's Jameson and Uncle Ben. I never gave much thought to what they'd be like if they met. A relationship I'm sure very few have thought of. That's why Hickman was so clever at thinking it up. It seems meeting and actually becoming friends with a guy like Ben Parker actually mellowed an old hardnose like Jonah out. I look forward to their take on Spider-Man as he grows in popularity. Will they agree he's a hero or a menace? Or will they disagree? So much to look forward to. One final thing I'd like to know is what happened when that burglar showed up 20 years ago in this reality? There was no Spider-Man to allow him to escape at the arena, nor capture him later. But Apparently Uncle Ben didn't surprise him this time either. I'm really hoping to know what happened there. Did he get anything or search, give up and leave before anyone saw him? This series holds so much promise for interesting and exciting things ahead. Let's hope rather than screwing it up, as Marvel tends to do anymore, that this exciting trend will continue. more

this issue shows that the first issue was not a fluke, and Hickman is just firing on all cylinders. If he keeps this up, then this series will overtake Zeb Well's Amazing Spider-Man soon. I also love how we see how an Adult Peter Parker will struggle, and the art of course is spectacular. I think it is a fantastic idea to have an issue come out once every two months to really get the ideas sharp and to also build up hype.

Nothing here makes sense. The main issue is that we are seeing a mature man playing with his new super powers as if he were a teenager, I mean, do you want him to be mature or not? I will elaborate later why the story doesn't make sense at all, but first, there are some of the same technical issues the previous one had: The "bros" relationship between Jonah and Ben feels weird but I won't complain about it, what I did find annoying was the dialogue about the 25 years of cofee, that page was completely pointless. I guess Hickman wanted to get some casual dialogue like the "Royale with Cheese" scene from Pulp Fiction, but the result feels so unnatural that it seems like it was written by an AI, that must be insulting to any writer bu t I'm sorry, bad dialogue is bad dialogue. It serves no purpose. A good editor would have altered that. (I'm going to repeat that several times, get used to it.) Marco Checchetto is one of the best artists working at Marvel right now, but someone has to tell him that's not what a one-eyed man looks like, or that he should at least have consistency, how is it possible that in one panel the guy has a scar and in the next panel he doesn't. Maybe he didn't notice the scar was missing, but a good editor would have. Checchetto, next time just draw a patch. Now, let's talk about the story: I love the Shocker and I hate when writers make a joke out of him, that's not the case here and I appreciate it, the problem is that by making the Shocker kind of cool, Hickman turned Spider-Man into the joke. Seriously, Peter Parker should be a smart guy, sometimes silly but always smart, here, the Shocker easily outsmarted him TWICE. It's not believable at all. Peter is not even a kid here, he is a grown man, why was he fooled so easily TWICE? I get it. This guy is not a smart guy. Peter's IQ isn't the only inconsistent thing here. I mean it when I say that the story doesn't make sense. At the beginning of the issue, Peter's son (Richard) tells his little sister (May) that the masked man on the front page is not real, that it is probably photoshop or CGI, and Peter pretends he doesn't know anything, but a few pages later Jameson says that Peter Parker was the one who took the photograph of the mysterious man, so Richard was accusing his father of photoshop... WHAT THE HECK? Wouldn't it have been better if the son showed enthusiasm and curiosity about the story his father was covering? Jeez. And Peter Parker now is having "existencial questions", now he thinks that maybe it was a bad idea to do what the hologram of a stranger accused of terrorism proposed to him. OF COURSE IT WAS A BAD IDEA! And now he is in search of some meaning. Dude, you're married to a wonderful woman and have two children to raise, that's your friggin meaning. Maybe you were supposed to become a superhero, but you didn't, the world changed, your life changed and your responsibilities changed. The story would have been MUCH BETTER if Tony Stark had exposed Peter to new circumstances where he was bitten by the spider without him knowing, the fact that Peter willingly chose the powers makes no sense. A scenario in which Peter obtains powers without wanting it and that, instead of making him happy, causes him frustration as he sees how his entire life loses balance would be much more believable, in this scenario Peter would have to choose to sacrifice his lifestyle to become Spider-Man not because he wants to but because he has to, later in the series he would find out that it was not fate but Stark and that would cause an interesting conflict in which Peter would blame Tony for ruining his life. But no, no one told Hickman that his argument was stupid. Marvel urgently needs a good editor. Also, Mary Jane here is as plain of a character and one-dimensional as she could be. more

Ghostdemon - Feb 25, 2024 (edited)For your awareness "They likely can't answer you since they never read it. This is just a hit & run ratings troll job" I don't know where you'll get this information from but I read this comic and don't cry because I gave your favorite heroes 1.0 but the comic was boring.
Ghostdemon - Feb 25, 2024"1.0 means it couldn't get worse. The writing and art is the absolute comic there is. There is nothing redeeming about it. Nothing. I'd love to hear why you think this." I gave it 1.0 because: 1) I don't give points for art because I can happily read a manga/comic with shitty art just because of the characters and plot. 2) Nothing new and I didn't feel anything when I read the comic, literally nothing and it didn't encourage me to read the next issue and that's it.
Hex - Feb 27, 2024Both comics and manga are half art, half character writing and plot. Your justification makes no sense. If you felt nothing that's fine. But not crediting art when it's good is just as bad as ignoring/accepting bad art without criticism. Otherwise you're just better off not reading comics or manga altogether.
Psycamorean - Feb 28, 2024Art does a *ton* of the storytelling. If you feel something from an issue you read, it probably wouldn't have been as impactful as reading it in script form.
Ghostdemon - Mar 4, 2024Cry more because someone doesn't like the comic book of the hero you love so much, I can give you 10 series with poor art but a much better plot and characters, so...
