Captain America #1 is a strong start but it highlights one issue with Marvel's universe (and comics as a whole) in the sliding time line as to when things happened. While there's a lot of potential, the comic isn't subtle at all making it clear what we can expect. Sure we have seen Steve's past explored before but Zdarsky and Schiti make sure they present their story in a way that does feel like this is an untold Captain America story. In the process they are able to establish their voice for Steve Rodgers that will help inform the series when we get back to the present day of the Marvel Universe. Read Full Review

Goodbye Marvel. This story is good. Chip has (as should we all) forgotten about Batman and is back where he is inspired. The art from Valerio is, again, well above average. In all (as you can see from my rating) a decent start to what I hope will be a worthwhile run...So, why am I leaving ALL Marvel books? Captain America is my favourite character. I own a nice copy of Avengers #4. BUT, this Cap is NOT my Captain. What Chip and this comic have finally done is made me realise that the Universe in which this tale takes place is NOT the Universe of my youth or the one I grew up collecting the comics of. Somewhere along the line an alternate reality has taken over...without so much as an explanation from Marvel/Disney. The FF were off to Ma rs, Cap is found in early 2000...I would go on but it would sound like a rant and this is not. I'm an author and some time back I approached Marvel with an idea of how they might solve the problem of the 'aging' of their characters. DC have done it so many times that we now just seem to accept whatever they tell us about Supes or Flash or the Lanterns. Although, I thought, the main problem was solved the proposal wasn't fully thought through - I was asking for NO remuneration - and hoped they might see that the details would be fun to work out and a draw to creators who wished to create. I had no reply and since then I have watched, open mouthed, as details in the stories and comics I have collected for over half a century (I have around 40,000) have been changed and omitted while still being told that yes, this, the 616, is the one, true reality. This fine comic has finally broken the camel's back and shown us the truth of the lie. Farewell, Marvel, auf wiedersehen, goodbye. more

I liked it for the most part. It is jarring to see the time change to the defrost, but the quality of the story was high. It set up what it needed to.

Maybe it was the coloring, but I swear this is not Valerio Schiti's art. When I compare it to Empyre or GODS or Inferno, it's totally different. I can't put my hands on it, but this artist was really familiar. regardless, I was surprised on how well this book was, considering how dissapointing Zdarsky's Batman final ending. I hope Zdarsky's run on Captain America will also be solid, and I will have my fingers crossed

I am willing to give this a chance. On the sliding time scale: I’ve read through Crises, a few year ones, an emerald dawn, a secret origin, a birthright…. I think I can get over it. If they fix the coloring and find the right balance in the storytelling.

Very well written and I'm a Zdarsky fan but it is a little disappointing that the series is a retelling of his past rather than set in current times.

There are a lot of service members that upset with parts of the story, and I think Chip is really pushing the envelope when it comes to trying to mirror the Steve Rogers story. However, it does start really well. Filled with action. I hate the design for the grey costume with he black star. It sucks. Hopefully we never have to see that again after next issue. I do like the conversation with Reed, but I just want a villain, not another clone of Steve. I'll give this another issue to see where it's going. I realize that having characters not age significantly over decades can lead to problems in a fictional universe, but in my opinion, the best way to deal with this strange phenomenon is to not address it at all. It's just not possible to reconcile every story with actual history, so why try at all? The new Captain America series does try and boldly moves the reemergence of Cap from 1963 (or some vague moment in time in the early days of the Marvel universe) into the 21st century, which leads to many problems, especially for older readers. Am I really to believe now that all of Marvel history has happened after 09/11? My brain hurts from trying to think about what that means for the continuity in X-Men, the FF or Damage Control (who fixe d the World Trade Center back in 1989!) Reading CA #1 feels like my childhood is being erased, but I understand why Marvel is doing it - to appeal to younger readers, which is fine and necessary, if they want to matter in this day and age. So with that minor mindf*ck out of the way, is Captain America #1 a good comic? Well... I think it was an okay comic. There are scenes and pages I enjoyed (the flashbacks look really cool - I wish the whole book was drawn in that style) and others that didn't. There were some weird transitions in the action scenes that didn't work well and the artwork was a bit inconsistent in quality. All in all, the issue was fine. However, I can't help but wonder what readers in 1963 or 1989 would think of it. more
