I don’t understand the rave reviews. This is a truly mid-level comic, with artwork that doesn’t really do justice to the Silver Surfer, new characters that aren’t very compelling, and a storyline that’s all over the place, lacking any real grounding. Silver Surfer is one of the most interesting but also one of the hardest characters to write. If you’re making a comic called “The Death of Silver Surfer”, you better bring your A-game. This one just doesn’t deliver. more

Being a gay man, this should speak to me. It doesn’t, because it looks like crap and reeks of indoctrination. Really, I’m expected to buy this poorly assembled bullshit just because I’m homosexual? It may come as a surprise to you, Marvel, but your actual gay and lesbian readers, like any other reader, just want to read a great comic, but you’re not giving us great comics anymore.

Bad art with beyond boring "stories" with no action for 99% of the book. Queer people might actually like to see SOME fighting instead of feeling in their SUPER HERO comics once in a while. Also, I thought Tim Sheridan was all but hurt over DC not supporting his Gay Lantern book and was done with them. I guess not....unfortunately. I think this book is a prime example of how agendas and identity do not really equal talent. Spend some money on quality talent to show you care about a group of people instead of simple lip service at a gouging ten dollar price tag. more

Adam Kubert and Sara Pichelli make Giant-Size X-Men 1 look good, but make no mistake: this issue continues the ongoing desecration of the corpse that once was one of the most beloved, inspiring and exciting comic franchises of our times.

In part 1 we learn why Kamala Khan - a character nobody asked to be turned into a mutant in the first place - is the best, most intelligent and most important mutant of them all. In part 2 we learn that Prof. Xavier, a white cis male, has always been scum - by adding a new character and origin to the story of the original Giant-Size X-Men.

I doubt that any of this is what X-Men fans wanted.

The fact that Marvel is going for that crap is interesting though. I can't help but wonder what they are trying to achieve with all these retcons and subversions. Do they want to change X-Men continuity for good by inserting Ms.Marvel into everything? Or is this just a self-contained story and everything will be as it always was after it's wrapped up? In which case I'd ask myself why I should care about these one-shots at all?

Whether it's one or the other, Giant-Size X-Men 1 (2025) is disrespectful to the original and tries to further shove a character down our throat that has failed to stand on her own and that for some reason has now become the vehicle for Marvel's political agenda. And this, perhaps, is the answer to the mystery why we get comics like "Giant-Turd X-Men". more
