Batman #50
July 4, 2018
|
|
Yes, it was wrong of DC to hype up the wedding and then it not happen. Yes, I'm pissed that it didn't. However, this is still a great issue of Batman.
Most of King's run has been hit or miss, but everything came together in this one. The duel narratives, the art reflective of Batman's history, and the emotion it contains. Most of the complaints seem to be about the wedding not actually happening, instead of the issue itself, which is a disservice to all who contributed, including those who laid the foundation for King to come and spin his tale.
Given that we're halfway into his run on Batman, and a huge part of it has been over whether or not Batman can truly be happy, I think it's safe to say that this is not the last we'll see if the Bat/Cat romance.

Doomsday Clock #1

I'm not someone who bows at the feet of Watchmen. It's a great comic, surely, but it's not my favourite. That being said, I loved Doomsday Clock. Not much happens in it, but reading it, you get a sense of what's to come and all the world building being done by Johns and Frank. It has the feel of an epic, in a way I haven't felt in a while (probably not since the Rebirth one-shot, at least). Metal is shaping up nicely, but it's a different sort of event than Doomsday Clock. That's the balls-to-the-wall, non-stop action like modern events. If you've missed a slow-burn story from the Big Two, certainly check out Doomsday Clock.

It's okay. The art is great, but it felt a bit short story-wise. Being Peter David, I'll give it another shot, but judging by the first issue, the series will probably continue to be just-above-average.

Not the strongest issue in the series, but definitely not the worst. Part 2 of "Run, Goblin, Run" sees Phil Urich's (aka the Hobgoblin) life come crashing down. Spidey has revealed Phil's identity, so Phil makes a final stand. The art is fit for a comic like this, but the writing fell a little flat. The ending wasn't very satisfying, and felt more like setup for future plot lines than a true ending.

Wonder Woman #23 is definitely the best issue of the series so far, and is one of the best comics I have ever read. This issue will have you laughing, then cheering, then crying by the end of the issue. Brian Azzarello has crafted a wonderful comic. Cliff Chiang draws the entire issue, and you'll probably end up staring at the art for a while before turning the page. I cannot recommend this enough.

Wonder Woman #61
January 3, 2019
|
|
Before going to pick up this issue, I was questioning whether or not to continue reading Wonder Woman. After all, the series hasn't been remarkable since Rucka left. Unfortunately, I still don't have an answer as to my future with Wonder Woman after this issue. Wilson's writing has elements I like, such as her characterization of Diana herself, but does little to get me to care about the conflict at all. Similarly, the art itself has moments of brilliance but also boring. So far, Wilson's run has all the pieces to be great, she just needs to better work on fitting them together. And given that I didn't reach a conclusion on whether or not to drop, plus am going to be away from my LCS for months again, it appears I will be sticking with Wonder Woman for now.
