Jun 19, 2024Pairing with Wilsons emotionally and socially driven coloring, the aesthetic of the book feels as foundational as the artwork in the original Ultimate Spider-Man. With one story arc under its belt, its clear that this book will go down as a defining moment in Spider-Mans history, offering a real, substance path forward for the character in terms of plot, character, and artwork. This is a book that belongs on any comic readers shelf, Spider-Man fan or not. It is an offering of what Big 2 comics can be when they have the chance to grow and change, striving for something familiar yet original. Read Full Review

Jun 20, 2024Ultimate Spider-Man #6 is yet another example of the excellence that is Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto run. The way they wrap up the first story arc created even more interesting in not just the plans for Spider-Man and Green Goblin but the direction the entire Parker family will take from here. Jun 19, 2024Ultimate Spider-Man #6 is the issue starving Spider-Man fans have been waiting for. Checchetto delivers the goods with fantastic character acting and art, and Hickman finally takes a break from interesting-yet-unnecessary world-building to give readers an adventure story that mixes action, heart, and intrigue. If it wasn't for a (probable) glaring goof between the art and the script, this would be a nearly perfect issue. Read Full Review

Aug 01, 2024Wilson Fisk has proven to be a fantastic villain and a worthy stand in for the Maker. Its obvious that in this reality, Wilson Fisk is going to end up being Peters arch nemesis, and now that he is also super-powered, Im excited to see how Peter and Harry rethink their strategy. This issue had heart, grit, and a surprising amount of bloody action, especially for a first meeting between our heroes and villains. Jun 19, 2024Ultimate Spider-Man #6 is better than the previous issue, but not as good as the first four. The family's reaction feels a bit odd with MJ being far more understanding and calm about it than expected. There seems to be a lack of it hitting them as to what it all means. Maybe we'll see that in the next issue but for what should be a shocking moment, it falls flat and comes far too soon in the series. Read Full Review

The first arc of Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man comes to a thrilling conclusion, solidifying its place as Marvel's best current Spider-Man series. In these six issues, Hickman has masterfully crafted a fully realized world with his version of new, yet not-new characters. It has delivered everything Spider-Man fans crave: intense action involving a mature Peter Parker, who also has a home life that includes his perfect partner, MJ. But none of it is lip service. There is an intentionality in this book that shows the creative team knows exactly what they want to do and are flexing all of their creative muscles to achieve it at an extremely high level. While we see how much of a family man he is in this universe, I’ve loved how much Peter’s family has shaped the superhero he has become. May helped him choose his costume a few issues ago, and in this issue we see that MJ decides on his name. I actually hadn’t even realized he had never used it yet, but I nearly teared up upon its first appearance once I realized what Hickman was doing. Hickman has shown he can write superheroes of all stars and stripes, but I didn’t know he was so good at writing these softer moments. The dynamic between the Parker family is not what we typically see in pop culture. They have their flaws and disagreements, but they’re respectful of one another and aren’t afraid to show their love. Marco Checchetto returns to art duties and immediately reminds us why he is one of the best in the business. Every scene, every character and facial expression, every minor piece of background is drawn with precise detail. His Kingpin looks downright terrifying. His action panels are brilliantly choreographed with an intensity that makes you feel every bump & punch along with the characters. This isn’t just art, it’s an experience. Colors from Matthew Wilson bring Checchetto’s designs to life with deep palette that runs from hot to cold to help set the necessary mood. His rich red and oranges during the battle between Spider-Man, Green Goblin, and Kingpin create an intensity that draws you in. Rounding everything out is Cory Petit's lettering which perfectly ties the visual & written aspects of the book together for a complete packaging. Ultimate Spider-Man #6 is more than just a great Spider-Man comic – it's a near-perfect comic, period. more

Theme: HOPE Yes. I gave it a 10. I usually ignore the top scores or lowest scores of something. But this, for the first time in a long time, I fully believe, ten toes behind this line, will die on this hill give this a 10. I am a 38 year old man. And I cried. I cried tears of joy, Tears of frustration and tears of HOPE. I've read Spider-Man since I was 5.Spider-Man was my hero, as in truly. At 5, my formative years were spent reading old back issues and very early 90s stuff. And more or less, Spider-Man became more than a comic to me, he became an ideal. The things he stood for, his love for MJ. His fierceness to fight for what's right and good. His ability to THINK through his problems, not just rely on his powers, his willingness to ne ver give up. And MJ: Peter's rock, while just human, she brought to the book the strongest superpower of all: Hope. All of that was lost when OMD happened (well it started a bit before, Sins Past for instance, but OMD was...apocalyptic) and it has never been regained in the 616.We had glimpses of Peter and MJ with kids (Spider-Girl, Renew Your Vows) and personally I loved those instances. Never understood why they hated 616 Peter and MJ so much. So, thats where the tears of frustration came from. The tears of Joy and Hope came from Nick man's writing in this (and previous) issue(s). Hickman treats Peter and MJ as humans. As adults. And with love and care. This makes this Peter and MJ not just relateable, but as ideals to strive for in OUR lives. Peter kept his being a hero a secret from his family, and this is revealed to them when Peter comes home after getting beaten badly. But it doesn't devolve into screaming, yelling, or threats of divorce. Its handled maturely, even by the kids. Sure, the family is scared for Peter. But their love for him overcomes any anger about a secret. We even get a peak at some 90s innuendo from MJ about adult activities. Hickman even writes the kids as....well KIDS, with different developmental levels and everything. May(Peter's daughter), in her overwhelming worry about her dad bluffs out his secret in a tearful rambling. May had a hand in creating the Blue and red Costume, and MJ gives Peter the Spider-Man moniker in this issue. Richard (Peter's son) is level headed in the whole situation, but asks his dad to be careful after wanting to ask a million questions. This series, but especially this issue gives me HOPE. It...its a breath of fresh air after being held under water. Words can't do this justice to the hope for a character who has endured SO much over the years...the HOPE it gives me. As a fan, as a reader, and fundamentally on a human IRL level. Its astounding how a comic, when done well, can convey HOPE to real life. The art in this one is great as well. In the fight w the Fisk, the hits seem to have gravitas. The art really conveys Hickman's writing well both in fight scenes and at home with the family. more

Plot Peter and Harry visit Kingpin, as he was part of The Maker's cabal, but they both do not know that they are facing an enhanced human and Wilson Fissk does not hold back in beating them up. Peter's bruises were evident in the morning and his daughter inadvertently reveals that she has been doing superhero activities for months. Although her children are excited, MJ is worried, but accepts this new facet in Peter's life and using her public relations knowledge officially gives him her code name... SPIDER-MAN. This series achieves a different atmosphere for Peter, having a family will be the pillar of support for this superhero activity. Art It is loaded with great details that explode in your face supported by subtle and well-placed textures, which gives a raw and powerful tone to this story that shakes up and gives a realistic twist to Spider-man. Summary Peter's secret is revealed to his family, while he begins to make new enemies. Great closing of a first story arc that never ceased to surprise more

Misters Hickman and Checchetto just floored me. This is the best Spidey story I’ve read in years. The characters, the subtle differences, the dynamics between them, the villains, and the way it all plays into the overarching Ultimate storyline is just brilliant. I might have liked a little more time between Pete and May pre-everyone finding out, but I’m confident plenty more Spider-family is coming.

I really liked the issue, and seeing Marco Checchetto's art back is always amazing to see. I really did like that this was finally the issue that the rest of the Parker family found out about his secret of being the wallcrawler. Seeing the chemistry between Peter and Harry definitley was fun to see before the action and looking forward to how they grow as a pair in their teamwork and in friendship and in their sole fighting ability. It was cool to see how green they both kind of are especially Peter, but having something to look forward to later and eventually to see how far he's come in that aspect, in later issues. However, I guess the only thing that held back the rating is just how MJ and Richard reacted, it just seemed like they came t o terms with the fact that their Husband and father is a superhero fairly quickly. And they found out by seeing him be all beat up with a black eye and cuts on one side of his face. I get that this Peter has a pretty good life and we all like that in general, its definitely a great change of pace but I would think this would be a pretty big point of contention especially with MJ, since it would mean not only her husbands safety, but also her kids and herself. But I will admit seeing the final page and how the name of Spider-Man becomes reality once again was very nice to see, generally speaking I think we all love to see it. more

Jonahtan hickman is like the Human Torch right now, because he's literally on fire with this run. He is straight up murdering the competition with this run, and I love the chemistry between Peter and Harry, I like how threatening Kingpin is, and I like how Peter's kid chose the suit for him, and how Mary Jane chose his name. It's beautiful, I f*cking love it.

The only thing I'm left wanting on in this book is a bit more engaging action. Seeing as it's Peter still getting his feet under him as well as Harry, I can understand. It's their first big fight. Against an opponent they were both completely unprepared for. I just want my jaw to drop at some point from how amazing that will be. I know we'll get there. Before then, we've got some of the best characterization in Spider-Man that I could ask for. It's not 616 Peter and this still feels like the most genuine version of him we've seen in almost 20 years. Peter who cares about his family, Peter who doesn't WANT to hurt people or commit crimes if he doesn't have to. A real boy scout in the best way. Just a good guy doing everything he can to do th e right thing. All the while being led by a man with a much more cynical and potentially sinister agenda. The inevitable confrontation between Peter and Harry will happen but the build up of their mutual trust being established and reinforced over time is a fantastic stepping stone into creating a satisfying and devastating falling out. I am also left wondering about Richard's attitude toward Peter's reveal. MJ's I can understand. She has clearly wanted Peter to really come out of his shell and be the person she knows he wants to be. And while dangerous she knows that this is his choice and will stand by him as this is a broken world without many heroes. It hasn't gotten to the point where it's TOO dangerous. We'll see if we ever get there and if that creates tensions between them. Richard however is a curious case. I'm interested in seeing what his real thoughts are. I'm sure we'll diver deeper into it. Hickman is the man. more

Alright. It looks like after 2 rather drab issues we're back in business here. Little was resolved as far as fighting the bad guy here, but it was a great conclusion to our introductory story. It was also a clever way to bring the secret out. How often does a superhero have a family that shares his secret? Frankly it's a fresh twist that actually works. It should be interesting seeing how this impacts the Parker family. I wonder if Uncle Ben will learn it too? The possibilities are vast and quite exciting to consider. As for the big battle against the Kingpin, hopefully Spider-Man learned something. Rushing in recklessly is never a good idea. That's one reason I doubt this apparent partnership with Harry will work. Harry is reckless here a nd I doubt he learned that. I expect an eventual clash over that between the two. I'd say they also learned dealing with Fisk will not be as easy as they expected. The Kingpin never has been an easy challenge, but in previous Spidey incarnations he never rushed into their first confrontations so recklessly. When you confront the rampaging bull you need a plan. It's issues like this that make it a small wonder why this is outselling Amazing by far. Ultimate Spider-Man definitely earns that title. more

Not to bother to try out outdo other reviews. My favourite parts: He got his name! Woo! I enjoyed that a lot. The Kingpin fight, although just round one was a lot more shocking than I figured. I just wish it would have gone on for a bit longer. Cons: The family took the situation a bit too well. Like that was awfully convenient. Wish it would have been handed with more nuance.

Okay, listen. I understand the criticisms about MJ and Richard's sudden acceptance of Peter being Spider-Man. As a matter of fact, I, somewhat, agree as well. Richard seemed a bit troubled or concerned, but I have a feeling that we'll revisit that at some point. As for MJ, I'm not sure there. I'd like to have faith that there's a bigger reason for how well she took this, considering it's Hickman, but I'm unsure currently. All of that said, I still really enjoyed this. Especially the dynamics between Peter, Harry, and Wilson. That was just a lot of fun, man. I was super stoked to see Checchetto back on the interiors, as well.

Thank God we are back to form on this series. I was just about to drop it from my pull list. Two issues with Spider-Man even making an appearance is insane. This is structured very well and there's a decent fight scene as well as scenes with the family. That's why we read this book. I did think it was a cop-out with him telling the family the secret when he was so adamant about not telling them only two issues ago. Otherwise, the issue is great. Very good issue and wonderful series that hit all the beats for a fun and intriguing Spider-Book. But the same family aspect that's a strength in this story was a weakness here in the narrative because MJ's reaction to the reveal felt off to me or maybe there will be delayed ramifications when danger undoubtably rear its head. Harry/Peter Tag-Team is pure fun. Checchetto back on art duty immediately levels up the story and I see why he needs more time and I'm fine with it.

I wish this was perfect. Or an amazing conclusion to the first arc. But unfortunately it isn't. There is a lot of amazing stuff here, chemistry between Harry and Peter, amazing art and action. But MJ and Richard were disappointment. Richard feels like a non-character and MJ feels too perfect. There is no struggle, no doubts, not even worries or arguments. Just text-book perfectism, which is nice, but not exciting. I don't want massive argument or anything, but something. Right now I have gotten very little from MJ as a character and I hoped this would give us something. I love MJ. I love her and Peter together, they are my favorite couple in comics and one of my favorites in fiction. So I wanna see her more, as three-dimensional character, not just as "perfect wife". But I know we have only seen 6 issues. My expectations were high because this series overall has been so good. So we might get more out of MJ and Richard later. more

Scartissue2002 - Jun 21, 2024I agree, I really like that Peters family life especially with MJ is good, it just seemed that there should have been more worry from MJ not just for her husband but the kids. I definitley agree with you about not wanting to see an argument but definitley some contention about the secret, and possibly trusting Peter in the end but the series is still great in my eyes just something that seemed off like you brought up and at least its giving us something fans wanted, a happy Peter/ Spider man

Its good. But this dude brings nothing new to the table. At all. The action scene is great. The family seen is... fine. But i was expecting them finding out to be a bigger deal. They don't really do anything with it. Hickman set up the mayday as knowing and I thought that was gonna be an interesting dynamic but a couple issues later she just reveals it anyway and MJ is immediately OK. Its just like... kinds predictable? Kinda redundant? I want meat, character drama. For decisions to matter. Peter's choice to hide it didn't matter. He might as well have just told them all a couple issues ago. Meh. Still good.

I'm a big fan of Hickman and I've been really enjoying this run up to this point, but I cannot ignore how poorly MJ was written here. She really did not seem like a real person, with real thoughts in her head. It feels nice for everyone that she's so supportive and unquestioning and... subservient, because that 616 bitch isn't, but I promise there is a better way. We can have supportive wife material MJ *and* have her be a strong person in her own right. We should not skip over the necessary character work to get to that feel-good final page, but we do. I hope future issues rectify this, but this is a glaring misstep for me.
