It is a well regarded fact that punitive justice systems and for-profit prisons contribute to the recidivism rate of inmates. There is a profit motive to keeping more and more people incarcerated. The United States spends nearly $81 billion a year on incarceration, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, however this is a definitive understatement when you acknowledge things like payroll, healthcare, policing, food, construction, utilities, etc.

But Why Tho? - William Tucker
Oct 27, 2021Daredevil #35 is a thrilling conclusion to the arc. Zdarsky has ensured that other plot points have been put to the side so that this war with Bullseye is streamlined and entirely captivating. The use of characters that know each other so well shows an incredible understanding of this small corner of the world. The fights in this run have been drawn out and exhausting sometimes to wear down the reader. Great heroes and great villains are brought together in an expertly choreographed action thriller. Zdarsky and the brilliant artists are creating a new classic before our eyes. Read Full Review

AIPT - Christopher Franey
Oct 27, 2021The penultimate issue of Chip Zdarsky's excellent Daredevil is a great issue that took me back to the issues right before Marvel's Civil War event. The groundwork is laid, and I can see how this builds to Mayor Fisk's big move for the upcoming Devil's Reign event. I loved how Elektra was spotlighted as a hero, which shows her growth. And as always, the art department on this book delivers astonishing sights!! Read Full Review

Comic Watch - Clint Theron
Oct 27, 2021Daredevil #35 depicts an epic battle of strength and wits between Elektra and Bullseye which culminates in a pretty satisfying conclusion. While I wish the early scenes of Elektra fighting the Bullseye Boys would have been easier to follow, the main event felt exciting and tense until the very end, when everything just sort of worked out conveniently. Oct 30, 2021Daredevil #35 is the issue before the big finale which also appears to be laying the groundwork for the upcoming "Devils' Reign" event. Issue 35 is likely the best showcase of showing how competent Elektra can be as the Devil of Hell's kitchen. I just wish Matt and the other Marvel heroes didn't show up and almost forget Elektra was even there. Read Full Review

Great conclusion to the hunt for Bullseye. All the major players were given something to do this issue; culminating in a satisfying conclusion to this arc while dropping interesting teasers for what is to come.

Elektra stopping Matt from beating Bullseye was such a great moment that highlights how much of a hero she has become. This was honestly a very satisfying conclusion to Lockdown.

There were some good scenes and I actually did enjoy the art. What I didn't like were the cheesy parts like when the heroes showed up or some of the Bullseyes fight.

This wasn't the best penultimate issue. Mostly because of the art. When I saw Checcheto's art on the cover, I got hyped seeing this "grudge match" between Bullseye and Elektra. But I didn't get that. I know that Checcheto is working on Devil's Reign right now, but this art just isn't that good. And the writing? It's not the best Zdarsky has offered. Spidey felt off in the last issue and Bullseye isn't used properly. I miss when he used those cards. Or anything other than guns. It just makes him feel less of a threat. It's not bad. It's okay. But, I expected better.

This was OK. Nothing to get me excited for Devil's Reign. It has come down quite a bit these last few issues. The way the fight scenes went down and how the heroes showed at the end was just dumb. The art on the fight scenes was confusing at times and didn't help.

I made the mistake of getting a subscription to Daredevil through Marvel via Midtown Comics so I get to read this a month and a half after everyone else. I’m a fan of both Daredevil and Chip Zdarsky but this issue was a letdown. I get the impression that Zdarsky is just tired of writing this series and is focusing most of his efforts elsewhere, while hastily wrapping up his run here. As a result, Matt’s interpersonal struggle about doing the right thing and not acting as if he is above the law, a struggle which he has been dealing with this entire run, is just haphazardly dismissed. After three years, instead of a real resolution, what we get instead is an awkward close where Matt just impulsively decides he is in fact too good to follo w the law and he has fellow “heroes†that feel the same way to back him up. The fact that the focal point of the past three years was so sloppily and inexplicably resolved in half a page really diminishes what has otherwise been a great run. more

I'm really not sure what to make of this issue... I thought the art was a step up from the last one, and there were some cool moments, but overall it felt disjointed and scattered. Elektra's internal monologue throughout the fights was a little hokey (I'm not a big fan of characters narrating what they're doing or what they need to do next while they're doing it), Spidey chewing out that cop seemed both out of character and uncalled for, and that was perhaps the weirdest timed marriage proposal I've ever read. Fisk gets stabbed, Mary comes out of nowhere and kills the Bullseye clone, Fisk saves Mary from falling to her death, and then he just...proposes? I don't know. It just felt forced and out of place. Definitely the weakest issue of the run so far. more

Confusing fight scenes. Hard to follow. And bullseye used to use Everything as a weapon, not just a pistol. The way the clones are disposed of is ridiculous. And all the heroes showing up after the action is over is silly and since when do they interfere with beat cops who just have their orders? Really a come-down.

Even though I'm a big-time BLM/Defund pinko, it didn't feel good to see Spidey shame a random cop like that. It's a sentiment I agree with, but the time, place, and speaker were all wrong. But that didn't factor into my rating much. The initial fight scene was visually disastrous, the final resolution was unsatisfying, the Fisk/Mary story just got thinner and less believable, the prose is some of Mr. Zdarsky's weakest, and Izzy Libris has become this arc's appendix -- totally vestigial. OTOH, the theater scene was deliciously demented, featuring the level of visual and conceptual quality I expect from this title. So I still rated this issue above average (a little). If only the rest of it was anywhere close to that!

Okay. Fight sequence hard to follow but great fight sequence. I read the issue again. Again Stupidity from Chip Zdarsky. Here, Spidey was wrong. I agree Cops didn't do to stop Bullseye. But this stupid pep talk isn't justified either. DD ran from Prison. He is fugitive. Cops had order to arrest DD. That particular cop, who listened to Spidey' stupid pep talk was just following his order. Why he was put like he was wrong in following order? What a Bullshit. From when, following order became wrong? Even the order wasn't wrong. DD is superhero but it doesn't make him above law that law will start bending over his d**k. He ran from Prison. So he must be arrested like other people who ran from Prison. Why DD be treated differently than other s? Is he above law? Oh, Matt Murdock, lawyer, already illegal Vigilante, now also thinks himself as superior to Law and everyone. Living in universe where Superhero thinks himself above law is hell. Superhero are curse rather than boon. Rating only for great Art. Writing sucks. more

This was an incredibly clumsy issue. Elektra somehow loses track of the Bullseye doubles despite watching them as they run away, then just so happens to have a perfect line of sight on both of them as they hide in the rafters, which seems unlikely. I was thrown off when Bullseye starts to do a stage act as if he's the Joker, but it is explained that he's cognitively altered himself to act more unpredictable in the hopes that it will give him an edge on Daredevil, so it does end up making sense why he's been acting so out-of-character. The end is where things really go off the rails. Daredevil literally comes out of nowhere and clocks Bullseye in the face as the climax. I guess that's technically a spoiler but, in this case, I think i t's worth warning the reader to lower their expectations. Things get even more awkward from there as various other Marvel heroes show up to stand up to some random officer on behalf of Daredevil, freshly broken out of prison, with knowledge of the prison experiments that haven't been clearly established to be public knowledge yet. It's just a mess. more

Bad art, stupid plot, idiotic propaganda. Thank God this run is nearly over, maybe after this Zdarsky can actually focus on a story and not just infecting us with his stupid ideas about how prison turns people violent, because otherwise those people were obviously very decent citizens who got there just by crossing a red light. I'm really not one to wish other people harm, regardless of their stupid and moronic beliefs, but I would wish one of these stupid writers who are so detached from the world to just meet one of these "innocent victims of the system" in an alley, see if their stupid theories would work. These people are what Lenin called "useful idiots" as in people who in their stupidity are sabotaging their own country. They're like the idiots who at riots protest the police and then when an incident happens, they're all "call the police". Dude, are you crazy? Weren't you just asking a second ago for police to be abolished, why would you ask for their help? Then again, logic and sanity are not the strong suits of these people. more

Machinery Insect - Oct 27, 2021Private prisons have an estimated profit margin of 2.7%, and that's just the prisons themselves, and not the multitude of other private companies that offer their services. Like any private company, the goal is to increase that revenue, which is increased by the number of inmates being held at their facilities. The obvious incentive here is then to keep people imprisoned and ensure that more get imprisoned.
Machinery Insect - Oct 27, 2021This means there is little to no attempt to rehabilitate these people, or in many cases, spare them from becoming more hardened criminals. That's why the recidivism rate is so high, and that's what this comic was getting at. Norway spends a lot on their prison system as well, but the results of that spending are far different. Their prison system focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment. Compare the United States' rate of recidivism of nearly 68% in three years, to Norway's 20%.
Machinery Insect - Oct 27, 2021Compare the crime rate between the two countries. Norway has a crime rate of 33%, versus The US's 47%. On top of that, we can see a direct correlation between inmates being released in Norway and the country's employment statistics, so the prison system in place is also beneficial to the economy, despite the high costs.
Machinery Insect - Oct 27, 2021It is clear that the system in the United States, and most western countries, is inefficient, costly, dangerous and inhumane, and that there is a better solution to the crime problem, which is why the criticisms in comics like this exist.
Merlyn - Oct 27, 2021Well hello there, just new made account specifically to comment here. Your "well regarded fact" is in fact called "opinion". One I don't happen to share. For one, stop making stupid comparisons between USA and Norway. Completely different types of countries, low population density, they're miles apart in every way you want to think.
Merlyn - Oct 27, 2021No, it's not clear, again, it's a matter of opinion, one I don't share. You can't seem to grasp this concept, do you? No, there is not a better solution. Your "better" solution implies letting criminals off the hook and everything devolving into anarchy. I don't want that and I'm not in the minority about that, I think.
Merlyn - Oct 27, 2021Also, I have this weird feeling you're actually someone who already has an account here. If that is the case, I think someone should do something about it because I don't think there should be duplicate accounts.
Machinery Insect - Oct 27, 2021I made this account before this issue was even released. My "well-regarded fact" is based on the statistics, some of which I laid out above. Those stats also imply that the Norway model is a better one, and it has been adopted abroad, including in some states in America. Their solution leads to less incarceration, less crime and a better economy. Norway is not devolving into anarchy, is it?
Merlyn - Oct 27, 2021I think it's time you admit who you are so I can unblock you on your actual account and have an honest conversation.
Machinery Insect - Oct 27, 2021I laid out the facts, so I think this is a good end point. I don't think there's an honest conversation to be had with someone who thinks Norway has devolved into anarchy somehow.
Merlyn - Oct 27, 2021And I don't think there is an honest conversation with someone who doesn't care to read my first comment about not making stupid comparisons between a country like USA and Norway. You didn't laid down any facts, just opinions, and stupid opinions at that. This is over.
Rachit Mittal - Oct 29, 2021This issue was absolute stupid. Spidey pep talk is what bothered me very much. Cop was following his order of arresting DD, who just ran away from Prison. But DD did some good so he is out without Trial. BS. Looks like DD and every suoerhero think themselves above law. They instead think what they say is law. BS. They are just people with super powers but it didn't make them above law at all. Do some good and get free "get out of jail" card. Wow. This is absolute Stupid message.
Merlyn - Oct 29, 2021Which is ironic because the first arcs dwelled exactly on that: superheroes shouldn't be above the law and that's why Matt went to prison willingly. In a comic that didn't allowed itself several issues to this theme, I wouldn't have any problem with that but here it's just idiotic. Then again at this point Chip doesn't really care about the story (or Matt as a character) anymore, he's more concerned about putting forward propaganda that prisons make otherwise innocent people bad and police sucks
