Amazing Spider-Man #8

The Amazing Spider-Man #8 is a comic firing on all cylinders, taking a lackluster previous issue and performing a total 360 with the craft inside. From Wellss script to Romita Jr.s art and Caramanagas art, the issue doesnt miss a beat and anchors itself in a strong narrative core that could center the aimless title going forward. Along with strong innovations in the art and lettering effects that fill the book, this issue is a great place to jump on for Spider-Man fans unhappy with the book thus far. With the next arc of the title building to a crossover with the X-Men, including some mutants that Wells wrote in a much more consistent title, itll have to be seen if Wells and the creative team can carry the momentum of this issue forward. Amazing Spider-Man continues to be a really fun title. Not a ton happens storywise until the tail end of the issue, and that isn't so bad, because the bulk of this issue is a really engaging fight/chase between Spider-Man and the Vulture. The art team and the letterer really make a tense scene even more impactful with an expertly crafted moment. The implications of Norman's actions and words in this issue set up what could be a very interesting arc for the character, which is where this run could very possibly shine most. The new suit looks a bit janky to me, but I'm not fretting over it too much. I want to see Gleason's version of it, as he is the one who designed it. I'm sure it'll last until Dark Web, anyways. Also, I guess I have to cat ch up on Mutant comics in the next two weeks. more

An enjoyable wrap-up to this “mini-arc” of sorts. The bulk of this issue was Peter fighting Vulture, and it was a lot of fun to read. It just felt like a classic comic book fight. Plus, Peter being Peter with his witty mid-fight dialogue is always a treat when written well, and this was exactly that. As for the ending of the issue, I thought that Norman’s reasoning for not getting on the glider to help Peter was great, as Wells is establishing him as a character the reader can get invested in. Despite the hate surrounding the Mary Jane & Paul situation, this book is honestly really good.

This a really really good Spider-Man run so far, still has some mysteries going, and is doing a good job of keeping me entertained. It's changed up the status quo with some good writing, and some great takes on the villains. We all know him making peace with Norman Osborne will not last long, but it's always nice to see Peter give someone the benefit of the doubt. It's who he is, no matter how many times that person stabs them in the back. He's going to give them another chance.

As with last issue, I’m excited at the prospect of the new Pete/Norman dynamic but this issue is all action but little substance. Looks great but moves the ball up one yard.

Still not sold on this. At all. It's always 50/50 good and terrible. I love the art, but the story is meh: I can't take this Norman storyline seriously, not after what he did to Peter, Gwen and MJ in the past. And I can't believe he's free after all his crimes and being locked up in Ravencroft less than a year ago. Why and how is he running a new Oscorp? Also, why is Peter so damn weak suddenly? He can't beat Vulture without a new high tech suit by the Green Goblin? Also, what was the point of this Vulture story? Did Peter actually sell him to Tiana? And if he didn't, why didn't he tell Toomes? Why do I always have 100 questions after every single issue?

To be fair, some of these questions have been answered already. In #850 (or Vol 5 #49), Peter revealed Tiana what had happened with Toomes. And Norman ran Ravencroft after Absolute Carnage (as seen multiple times in Spencer's run) so no it's no wonder he is free again.

Nothing wrong with what the creators are doing here, but nothing spectacular, either. And their storytelling goals with this issue are pretty modest -- old-fashioned, too.

Dialogue didn't seem as on here in the first half but the latter was what I like to see from Spider-Man. Introspective and communicating with his villains. It's what makes him so likeable. The biggest detractor is Romita's artwork. It's just bad. Extremely flat, backgrounds almost non-existent leaving the colorist to just slap a tone in the back to attempt to give it life and depth. I like the idea of Spidey on a glider using Goblin-tech. It's a really cool idea that I am surprised I haven't seen before. But it shouldn't be Romita doing it. Patrick Gleason had a way better design and is a much better artist. He didn't get to do enough issues of Beyond and that is a shame. Like this book. Just kind of a shame.

This comic is going in the wrong direction! Any interest/ramifications from "the big event six months ago" is neutered by Peter acting normally and suffering no obvious harm other than his status with MJ. By now, who cares what that event was? Ditto with MJ and her new family - which has to be either a big retcon or an alternate universe version of her. As to this issue: falling from miles in the air and landing without any impact, webbing notwithstanding? Didn't Gwen die from the impact of being snatched out of the air from a much shorter distance? And steering the Vulture directly into Osborn's office from all of NYC? And putting on a new suit and miraculously recovering from his bruised/broken ribs? And all supervillains in this series j oking/speaking in the same voice? BAD. more

Gwen died because the sudden stop snapped her neck. Peter essentially made a cocoon around himself. It's not perfect but that's relatively how physics work. Also, Peter knows NYC and its skyscrapers likely better than anyone. It wouldn't be beyond reason to assume he would be able to navigate to Osborn's place with ease.
