This book has been great, but for some reason, people just don't seem to realize it's a Black Label book, which means this shit just isn't in continuity. This has loose connections to JLI, but that's it, and it's not like you have to even read JLI to enjoy this. And no, King did not "ruin" Martian Manhunter this issue. Human Target is an-out-of continuity Noir detective story. Characters are going to be framed in certain roles when you do a story like this, and these roles are to get the story where it needs to be. Human Target is the Hard-Boiled Detective, Ice is the femme fatale, and Guy Gardner is the jealous ex-lover, etc.
Whether you are fine with these character reworks is 100% up to you, but it shouldn't make you genuinely angry or upset. Like coupling together two characters out of continuity isn't "disrespectful", and it really isn't a big deal if characters are acting slightly different than how they usually would, or some side character that pops up in one issue has their character development during some dumb crisis/mega-event ignored, as this book is NOT in continuity. If it does genuinely make you upset or angry how King treats these characters, then maybe just try dropping the fucking book? I didn't like Strange Adventures or Rorschach, so guess what? I stopped pissing away money, time, and energy on something I didn't even like. I dropped them both by the second issue and just read something that I liked.
King & Smallwood are doing their own thing, and this book does it mostly perfectly. The art is amazing, King's dialogue is sharper than usual, and his captions thankfully don't slow the book's pace down as they did in Supergirl. Amazing read and probably King's most consistent work so far. Hopefully, he can stick the landing at the end, because that's usually where his stories fall apart for me.

This is some seriously well done satire. Mark Russell is so damn good and always has something worthwhile to say. Even if you don't agree with his politics 1:1 (which I and I assume many others do not) doesn't mean what he has to say isn't worth thinking and talking about. He always manages to make situations feel real with his perfect blend of humor and politics so when he does come at you with more heavy handed messages, it's able to land because the characters actually feel like real people, and not just plot devices to progress an author's agenda. I have always said you can have an agenda, just please tell a decent story!
Only problem I have with this book is I cannot tell any the robots apart for the life of me. They all look exactly the same and it can kind of mess up the flow of the story when you are double checking who is who from issue 1. The rest of the art is great thought, as the artist is able to potray real
emotions from these robots, I just don't know who is who.
Other than that, amazing second issue. Took me forever to find a copy though, my LCS has been sold out.

Another amazing issue from Lemire and Sorrentino. My LCS gave this and Good Asian to me a week early which was nice. The splash pages are incredible, with some seriously innovative panelling by Sorrentino. I know his art isn't for everyone, but it really works for the story Lemire is trying to tell. This is one of the best creative teams working in comics today. Pick up anything by the two of them.

This book makes me so happy. It's just Joshua Williamson writing Damian at his absolute best, while also having an amazing time fleshing out some of these tournament fighters, and still delivering fun action and solid writing every issue. This book probably isn't a 10/10 per se, but Williamson clearly puts so much care into it, that it sure does feel like one to me.

This honestly is my least favorite Superman book on the shelf, which is a shame because I usually love Taylor, but man this series is so damn soulless. Nothing has been done in 3 issues to make Jon any different from Clark, as he does exactly what Clark would do, and no reason or motive is given on why he wants to help so much. He has been given 0 new personality traits, hobbies, or literally anything to make him stand out from Clark.
Also, let's talk social issues that leave ALOT to be desired. This comic is clearly political and heavy handed, which I don't really have a problem with as long as it's well written, but this is just not and it is seriously distracting here. The refugee crisis is an important issue and there is a lot to it, but this was clearly written by some white dude halfway across the world who has no actual clue what's going on here besides what Le CNN tells him. It is so far detached from reality that is loses all relevance and ends up boiling a serious issue down to a set piece to show everyone Superman cares about refugees and has speeches prepared. That is so brave. Writing a story about important issues doesn't automatically make your work great if you can't actually say anything worthwhile, or even accurately portray the issue. This was lousy and the only saving grace is the art and covers.
Anyone value judging this book is also so fucking garbage. Just because a book validates your politics doesn't make it amazing, or mean people who don't like it are "bigoted" or whatever. It also doesn't mean just because someone whose politics differ from yours is writing Superman now, that the story automatically sucks. That kind of garbage ruins real discourse and constructive criticism about a book.
