The draw of Ultimate Invasion #4 is its setup of a new Ultimate Universe. It does that and does that pretty well. But, the issue, and series as a whole, rushes through explanation and background of key characters and moments delivering a reading experience that feels like the Cliff's Notes version of a series rather than laying a strong foundation and groundwork. Ultimate Invasion #4 looks great, but it's a mess. Hickman tries to get fancy with Time and Reality in the Maker's bid to create a Utopia in opposition to Kang, but the plot gets lost in the shuffle halfway through. Ultimate Invasion #4 solidified how big of a disappointment this entire event was. So much is expected from a Jonathan Hickman comic book that this left a lot to be desired. The entire execution of The Maker and new Ultimate Universe storyline failed to generate interest. The story was as meaningless as all the clone vs clone climatic battle we got in Ultimate Invasion #4. That leaves us with an Ultimate Universe that is not fresh and exciting. Oh my gosh I couldn't be more excited to see where this goes from here!! I loved every panel of this story. Hickman is hands down my favorite writer. I love his style of storytelling complex and multilayered stories. What a phenomenal final issue of the set up to the new ultimate universe. Phenomenal issue!!

I think this is really great and I don’t understand the lukewarm response to it. This issue is the start of something new yet not new, that Hickman fans should be hyped about. Bryan hitch delivers lots of cool 2-page spreads, to boot.

I liked how short this series was, but some won’t like that. I for one was glad this story was 4 issues instead of 12. It isn’t easy to make a story like this so succinct, and it doesn’t get enough credit for that. This issue feels like the part 2 to issue 3, simple as that.

Sorry but I loved this story. Its all setup, but it still has a core story within it, an ideal and a theme that defines how its central characters guide it. It feels and looks epic in scale but is not overwhelming. It plays out like a cinematic superhero movie but a good one. The art is brilliant and gorgeous. The colorist really did great work here with the lightning in the epic clashes of the gods of time. Im surprised at the middling reception here. This is exactly what I want out of superhero comics of this scale and its a neat setup for this ultimate universe.

Jonathan Hickman wraps up his four-part launch of the new Ultimate Universe with a fascinating exploration of this universe’s Howard Stark and what it means to be an autonomous individual. His decision to take matters into his own hands and his decisions have a seismic impact that will undoubtedly cause ripples yet to be seen. Hickman also does a phenomenal job developing this Reed Richards as a sympathetic and enigmatic figure who will like play a major role moving forward, as evident by the discovery he and Tony Stark, who dons the Iron Lad moniker, make at the end of the issue. This was the perfect conclusion to the initial story Hickman set out to tell, though I’m not sure where things go from here. The only series which will ta ke place in the new Ultimate Universe and that’s currently announced is Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man, which wasn’t set up at all. As a whole, this miniseries has been a quintessential Hickman story and it’s a shame Marvel didn’t put more marketing effort behind it. more

If for nothing else but those quotes, this series while possibly too short for the story it was telling is like most of Hickman's works. Fantastic.

This was, unfortunately, the weakest issue of the miniseries. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't good. I do feel as though this was a bit rushed and I think this could have been, at least, a 6-issue series instead of a 4-issue one. Either way, I did like a good chunk of what we got here and, as usual, Hickman's writing was definitely the strongest point of this. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this new Ultimate Universe shapes up.

The marketing and the final page are equally emphatic about this series being "a beginning," but it sure curls up on itself like a timey-wimey Möbius strip. Character X grows up to be Character Y, who returns to the past to set the plot in motion. Of course, this reading is merely implied, never definitively stated. And it's Jonathan Hickman doing the implying, so the odds are good that the likeliest explanation is wrong--or at least twisted. Strategic thoughts aside, this puzzle box of a series never really connected with me. There's a wicked intelligence in the ideas, and the art is scrupulously detailed to the end. It just never gelled into a must-read.

As a massive Hickman fan, this series was a letdown. It felt like 4 issues wasn't nearly enough for this. I have more questions than at the start and even if this event was considered as a prelude, it suffers that it's not fully enjoyable as its own thing. It's fine. Don't get me wrong. But I expected better. And the hanging plot threads from #1 feel very unnecessary now.

Def agree with everyone on this. Should have been a 6 or 12 issues. With the effect this is supposed to have, everything feels super rushed. All the character stuff was cool, but introducing these versions of characters needs a lot more baking in order for the story to hit. For me, Howard Stark dying really was just like ok that's something that happened rather than feeling an emotional impact for it. And Tony immediately assuming the Iron Lad mantle just feels like cool let's just start it here without any buildup. The world set up is cool, but we literally see no dynamics about it. All of the factions are just names on paper without any real follow up. In HoX/PoX and his follow up X-Men run, Hickman set up the status quo of the mu tants vs the rest of the world very clearly. Here it just seems way too contained for what the story is trying to be. On top of this, each issue was $10, and knowing that this was essentially just a tease to Ultimate Universe #1. The collected trade for this will be cheaper by far than each issue and will probably read better too. more

I will keep this simple. Now that all the issues are out and we can see what this entire mini-series is, I ask the simple question: Why? This is never really answered. It just feels like Marvel throwing a hail mary hoping to get more cash out of the Ultimate Universe considering how poorly their main universe is doing. Book itself is 'ok'. Not inspiring, and I feel a lot will finish this book with the statement 'Ok, that was a thing.' While this review is light on details, the feel to me is the most important for this book. You get nothing big from it. Just a middle of a road forgettable book and some wasted art (Hitch is good but not used to his full potential).

probably controversial opinion, but I did not enjoy this series. I get that this is basically the Marvel version of Flashpoint, where Jonathan Hickman is "resetting" or "creating" a new universe similar to ultimate Universe. But my biggest problem in this series is that it feels sluggish and boring in the first three chapters (maybe not hte first chapter), then it just rushes till the end. Maker was boring, the dialogue was clunky and made my eyes glaze over, Kang came out of nowhere, and I wished he was more interesting. In an alternate timeline, this could have been at least a 6 issue event. Miles Morales and Earth 616 dont really play a role, majority of characters are boring and uninteresting. Overall, maybe I'm an idiot. But I d idnt like this event, and this was pretty underwhelming and disappointing. I dont think Hickman is a bad writer because he made one bad event while ignoring Secret Wars, House/Powers of X, Infinity, and his work on Avengers and X-Men. I hope GODS will be good. But this was a bland, underwhelming and disappointing event. And I dont like Bryan Hitch's art at all. Sorry guys. Overall I would have gave this event a 4 out of 10, but for this issue its a 5 out of 10 more
