Priest, Quesada, and Isanove aim high here. Unfortunately, for as much as the art and coloring elevate Marvel Knights The World To Come #1, the overall narrative holds it back. While there are intriguing character moments, they arent surrounded by much in the way of world or story. I feel like this comic might have been fun in 1998, but it feels like moldy leftovers in 2025. Joe Quesada deserved some better scripts for his return to interiors. (Thankfully, Marvel Knights #1 is less wordy than Kevin Smith's Daredevil.) Read Full Review

I couldn’t help but wonder if Priest wasn’t inspired by Angela Basset yelling on the big screen, “Remind them who you are!!”. Because it seems as if he went straight home and did just that with this story. It explains why this first issue reads like Christopher Priest’s Greatest Black Panther Hits — Everett Ross’s humor, the power of the Dora Milaje, the absurdity of Wakandan geo-politics are all an homage to his own Marvel Knight’s series. As if to say, “Allow me to reintroduce myself..”. Cue Jay-Z’s Public Service Announcement.

Plot This comic tells of several situations in different eras using the event THE WORLD TO COME as a starting point. It is still unknown what happens at this base date. The first shows how T'challa dies 16 years later, and the leader of the Dora Milaje meets in Oklahoma with someone who knows what happened in the last forty years in Wakanda. It then tells of how eight years later, T'challa faces the challenge to obtain the Black Panther's sword. His opponent is about to die. The cleric is upset with T'challa and his entire relationship with the Avengers and Ororo Munroe, and is told that until the other breathes, the challenge is not over. But the opponent is T'challa's son with a New York jazz singer named Monica Lyme, a woman who d oes not belong to any tribe. T'challa's son is named Ketema and is Caucasian, possibly something the people of Wakanda reject. They then show how twenty-four years earlier, his marriage and separation from Ororo Munroe/Storm divided the nation, and her death led him to erect a monument. This comic chronicles the rise and fall of Black Panther and the possible nonexistence of a descendant. Its narrative is complex and disruptive, yet it flows calmly. Art It is detailed and achieves interesting ethereal effects that differentiate the different eras. It is mesmerizing. It felt a little short. Like it just ended. Which means it will read better in trade. So difficult to recommend picking up a $6 book that felt this incomplete. But I like the creators and trust them to deliver.

I had high hopes for this series, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite meet my expectations. While I really appreciate the artwork, the storytelling just didn’t draw me in. After finishing it, I was left with the sense of a missed opportunity. A feeling I’ve had before with the Black Panther series.
