Amazing Spider-Man #7 is an action-packed issue that may appeal to Spidey fans who enjoy a good fight scene, but it hardly progresses the plot. We still don't know who or what Hellgate is, just that he's powerful and wants to form an alliance with Spider-Man. Why? I don't know. Maybe we'll find out next issue. The art is a mixed bag with some of the panels looking rushed or unfinished. This is no doubt due to Marvel's seemingly greedy policy of publishing two issues of ASM each month. Plot This comic picks up right where the previous one ended, showing Spider-Man and Black Cat in the presence of Hellgate, who asks Spider-Man for a parley. Spider-Man asks him to give him time to stop BOBGLOBIN's henchmen from committing criminal activities. Hellgate is annoyed by Peter's audacity and eliminates everyone because he doesn't want to be bothered. Spider-Man begins to fight to stop him. Felicia Hardy/Black Cat yells at Spider-Man that he has to flee. She tries to distract Hellgate because she somehow knows that this being with magical powers is much more powerful than Peter believes. Spider-Man manages to dodge almost all of Hellgate's attacks, but the comic closes with Hellgate declaring that Spider-Man is the princ e she was promised. A shocking second installment that introduces this new villain whose powers come from the underworld. Art John Romita Jr. captures the grim and gloomy tone of this situation and incorporates it into the unique body language he gives Spider-Man with his art. It's a privilege to read comics illustrated by this legend who always evolves. JRJR always features one or more splash pages that define the comic. The inverted splash pages are a spectacular retro touch. This comic is a work of art, where the dynamism is mesmerizing. Summary HELLGATE arrives to collect a mysterious promise, and Spider-Man is part of this prophecy. more

The hate on this one is a little much. I don’t like JRJR or this would be a tad higher. This one was at least fun. It was a nice fight sequence, the banter at the beginning was good, and the inner monologue was decent. It’s better than the prior run and I wish it was better, yes, but it’s still not bad. Am I settling and accepting this? No, but I’ll give a C when it’s deserved. Overall average book.

There were a number of moments in this book that had me thinking it was about to get really good, including the last page where Hellgate is like "there he is" but it never crested into good territory imo. Joe Kelly is a really good writer and the dialogue is all really good, but for an issue that was almost all action it was kinda boring. The art was meh, I've never been a fan of JRJR at all but I've appreciated some of his Spiderman work lately. This book wasn't among that "some."

I think this is the weakest issue of this run. Not to say it's bad, it's still enjoyable read, but not on level of previous issues. Since it is mostly fighting. I do like how well Kelly wrote Peter here. He seems to have a good grasp on his voice. But JRJR was a disappointment. The blueprint is still there, I love how his makes the story move from panel to panel. It lacks focus. But if his inker currently is undergoing cancer treatment, I can't be too hard on the art.

I was invested to an extent. Just flew by without a really impactful hook. Imagine how much better this action would have been with Larraz. JRJR is washed!!

I don't want to be rude, but I think this issue confirms that John Romita Jr. is degenerating as an artist. This is probably unavoidable for any artist of a certain age. Alan Davis is not what he was and neither is John Byrne. JRJR - in my opinion - never produced the quality of those two, and now it's getting even worse unfortunately. Having said that, the real issue is Joe Kelly's story and dialogue. I seriously had to stop reading the book after two thirds because it was just so painfully stupid. This confirms what I suspected before - without great art (Pepe Larraz) this book is doomed.

You can draw the most breathtaking fight scenes in comics history, but it'll never make "You chaotic evil fart barbarian" into an acceptable taunt.
