Amazing Spider-Man #17

Amazing Spider-Man #17 is a blast. The plot has a long thread and energy in the short term. This is an extremely funny comic, silly at some points but in the most complimentary way possible. That is what works so well with Dark Web, not taking itself seriously and just having fun with demons and superheroes. THERE we go! After two rather disappointing issues, at long last this is the sort of nonsense I wanted from Wells & McGuinness doing an Inferno pastiche. Delightful

As a whole, this Dark Web event is a dud but props to Zeb Wells for his zany humor in this issue because it works here(and only here so far). I love McGuiness's work and his art is a perfect fit here with Rathburn/Menyz's wonderful inks and colors. As the great philosopher of our time once said "No question about it I'm ready to get hurt again"-Michael Scott.

Though it might not be what the event needed, this issue's absurd humor really hit the spot for me. The plot doesn't advance very much, but the non-stop misnomers are enjoyable. The characters' reactions to them (and Madelyne's disappointment with Chasm) are even better. The art remains solid and this was an all-around fun read. Ben Reilly's plan may be a problem in a big-picture sense, though. He was already pretty short on menace, and coming off like a schmuck here might undercut him completely.

So bad it's so good? Kinda. As I said, I'd rather have this story if it was not connected to Ben Reilly and all that's happened before. But sure, at least it's fun (and it's not something to be taken for granted in this run)!

Don’t get me wrong here, I’m still enjoying the current story, but it’s just not as good as the stuff we were getting prior. The humor here is fun, but it is getting a little too much for me with the build we saw in ASM #14. Maybe if this was the tone set in said issue, this wouldn't be as much of a problem. Even then, I just, in general, wish this was a more serious story after the way Ben has been acting since the end of the Beyond storyline.

Honestly, like Afre said. The problem with this event is that the tone is inconsistent, and the story really isnt that engaging. Maybe because I'm a stickler, but I'm not a fan of Ed Mcguiness art at all, the pacing is kinda wonky, the fights, dialogue and story isnt engaging. It's just not working for me. The tie-ins are better than the main event.

It's better than last time. The scenes of Peter working for Hell Bugle were enjoyable and all, but... This is just so stupid. Ben isn't the focus as much here, which means I am not reminded how terribly he has been written. It still annoys me whenever I see him talking. The "Sinister" Six is also just... what. All this just feels so random and goofy. It's not at all what I hoped Dark Web would be after such a strong opening. Now, it's not entirely negative that the comic isn't what I want it to be, if it otherwise is written well and drawn. This isn't... terrible, but I just can't enjoy this when the event itself still baffles me. It feels like tie-ins take this event much more seriously than the event itself.

I liked this more than last issue but just barely. The art is about all I have to praise this for even though McGuinness isn't my favorite Spidey artist, he's still good. Male characters at least just look really chunky. Thicc bois, which isn't the worst thing, it just stands out. There are only a few moments in this I thought the dialogue was even decent. Hell Bugle is funny but all of it is unnecessary. Robbie just exists there. Jonah has something to do for a few panels and it's only okay. Not even very funny except maybe to a 10 year old. I really don't know. This issue also didn't seem to move the needle forward in terms of the event and if you aren't reading the tie-ins, knowing there is only one more ASM issue and then the finale, th is really doesn't do much. Even trying to endear us to Parker-Man isn't really something I care about because none of this matters. more
