It took a bit to get back into the groove of the series and remember the who, what, where, when, and why of things but Taylor's plotting and dialogue works well to reconnect me with the story and its cast. I'm definitely glad to get this book underway again as it's a strong and engaging work with some really neat designs and ideas behind it and it takes chances in showing things playing out badly. Ivy's got a great moment here and I really liked Harley trying to find a path to peace. Constantine being even more reckless than usual is a whole lot of fun as well. Dark Knights of Steel #8 feels like one of the better chapters in a sometimes hard to read series. Much of its conflict comes as a result of several clashing storylines. I can tell Taylor has a handle on the direction by how each moment weaves into the narrative. The layout, color, and tone of the artwork is also a positive standout. My complaint since issue #6 has the same, this series is coming out so slowly it's agonizing at times. I think we're now a year in and we're only just past halfway done, when I expected the series to be completed by now. It's alright, we're getting there… slowly but surely. However, if you're someone a bit impatient like me, then I suggest waiting for the full collection to come out. Also, if you're like me, then you'll want the next issue right now! The art's beautiful and the story pulls you in every time. Issue #8 gave a good jolt to the proceedings, and I'm absolutely looking forward to the next one. Read Full Review

The War of the Three Kingdoms finally fully kicks off with Dark Knights of Steel #8. The story is equally dramatic and action heavy as you would expect. There are moments that do happen in this issue that do show how little time there is to fully develop certain key sub-plots and characters. That timing issue does impact how well the beginning of the War of the Three Kingdoms goes over. But what does take place keeps you engaged enough to want to find out how things will go next in Dark Knights of Steel. Read Full Review

Even though it took a while to get back into it, it's a great return. The story is convincing and the tension is real. Constantine is particularly well written. He wants war, he wants it powerfully, he becomes almost obnoxious. It's just a shame that Tom Taylor felt the need to show us that there was a third party involved in this story (with his own motivations clearly geared towards chaos). It wasn't necessary and it takes some of the bite out of the story. What an ending, I can't wait to read the rest. Not in 6 months eh!

The series finally came back after a weird hiatus. I liked it for the most part. It was good to see Harley and Ivey and Ollie and Black Canary. For the most part, everything worked, Constantine's hot temper and Ivy as the forest witch. Joker as Green Lantern is pushing it as is Lara acting completely out of character. Let's see where it goes.

The hiatuses this series has really hurt it. Not only interest and sales but the pacing is awful. Some of that is definitely due to the breaks but there is just too much happening in this book and I only care about a handful of the dangling threads of certain storylines. This definitely wasn't one of them. I always like the inclusion of the greater DC cast, seeing Dinah and Ollie are great but seeing as there are only 4 issues left there is no way they are going to get decent panel space or characterization in that amount of time. Seeing the Green Man or whatever they are calling him just upsets me. He does nothing for the story and was just an excuse amalgamate three characters into one mediocre one. Same with Constantine. I was really exc ited to see him in the beginning but he has been bastardized and coopted into a character I don't recognize. Go Lara though. more

Entertaining but everything moves at hypersonic speed that it really hasn’t breathed enough. It really feels like set pieces are in Taylor’s head but the in between on how to get to them are fully structured so he just jumps to them and relies on us the reader to add in our actual knowledge of thee characters to feel in gaps that in reality would not or should not be there because we are in a different DC here. It’s a little lazy now in its world building.

I'm afraid the series is pretty lost. Taylor pacing for this story is sadly, well, bad. Really bad. When you need to put the same narrative trick (and now, an evil counterpart of the Superman family will reveal themselves to be evil) four times in a row in, with literally no alteration, in the span of whopping 8 issues to advance your plot maybe you just don't have enough story for twelve issues. Which is a shame because other parts of the setting could and should use that panel time, TT's worldbuilding is pretty barebones and his characters are held hostage by the plot that needs you to not know them too much. The Green Man still feels like a pretty weak antagonist and the conflict lacks that personal touch you need in a war story. I h ope Taylor's next twist isn't what everybody thinks it is (imposters). It's a shame because when this story started, it seemed to have some promise, but even beyond some writing choices (which can be a bit more subjective) the storytelling skills just aren't there, I'm afraid this plot isn't really salvageable at this point but maybe that's just me. Putri's artwork continues to be top notch, though. more

This series is a complete and utter failure. It’s so fixed on pretending to be smarter than it actually is it completely fails at every level. The story is complete forced conflict and randomeness, we’ve got a bunch of characters that barely know each other fighting each other because a third group we barely know anything about just falls from the sky and kills somebody so that the story can advance, yet, instead of trying to get the tone of a “classic” fantasy series, this wants to trick you into thinking it’s actually layered when its not. The twists are either so obvious they don’t really warrant so much time dedicated to to them (yeah, the Evil Els are probably imposters, we get it, that reveal should have come several issue s ago and it still hasn’t come) or so obtuse they are imposible to guess (I was low-key hoping the Joker Green Lantern thing was a fakeout because it’s completely stupid and came out of nowhere). The characters are cardboard cutouts (partly because the series is so enamored with its asinine imposter plot it cannot actually characterize them for fear of showing its hand early), the conflict is completely artificial and the pacing completely dreaful (we’re way past the halfpoint of the series and it still feels the plot, which is pretty generic btw, has just started). We are still ending chapters with a random baddie coming into the story and murdering somebody, as if that were shocking anymore. I went to this with an open mind but seriously other than the artwork, this is absolutely terrible. And don’t get me into Taylor’s (lack of) dialogue writing skills… more

@DC Fan of Sorts - nope, and you’re just trying to twist my words. Nowhere did I say or imply that someone should stop reviewing things they don’t like. What I said was, it was surprising to still be reading something they hate and is obvious, 8 issues into the series. If it’s that bad why read that deep into the series?
