I also almost gave it an 8, but I think I'm a little suspicious, however I think it was a great change of direction.

Dec 07, 2021Batman #118 is a fantastic start to a new era for Batman, likely to appeal to fans both new and old. Batman himself is well-characterized, with a portrayal that veers more toward the classic detective model than the action-horror hero of the previous run, but without a jarring tonal shift that might be off-putting for current readers. The artwork is beautiful, but honestly, Im not sure Ill ever be able to get past that one page without wincing. Read Full Review

Dec 07, 2021This is the first new issue of Batman I've read in almost a year, and I am not kidding when I say it's the best time I've had with this title in a long, long time. Williamson doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, or even try to force changes that are meant to leave his creative mark on the character, but only end up diminishing Batman as a result. No, this is a grand adventure, meant to entertain and respect Batman's role as Gotham's protector, and have a good time doing it. Read Full Review

Dec 13, 2021Batman #118 ushers in a new creative team, a mystery for Batman outside of Gotham City, and, once he touches down in Badhnisia, a change into the Batman, Inc. costume for our Caped Crusader. I've got to say I'm happy to have the Bat-Symbol back on our hero, but the lack of trunks (plus the unnecessary seams) means we still are denied Batman's classic look as DC seems incapable of providing more than half of a good costume for our hero. As for the mystery, it seems Batman may have an ally (of sorts) in… Lex Luthor? Read Full Review

Beautiful art aside, taking Batman away from Gotham is a fantastic decision. The story needed something fresh and this is looking to be exactly what it needs, new locale(s), the underused Batman inc and some good old mystery/ detective work. Batman has outgrown Gotham and this was well illustrated by how he made short work of his A list villains during the first few pages. Good on Williamson to realize that Batman saving Gotham from peril from the same old villains is getting old. I'm really looking forward to this story.

Amazing issue and a fresh and exciting start for a new writer on Batman. He is currently writing the some of the best if not best books of DC, and it flows here to, I am really excited for where this story of Abyss leads. The art is amazing to show a change in writer and and writing in general, is it on far with Jorge's art I say it beat it in some places because this art works better in terms of grounded shady places with batman while Jorge's work better with bigger world building. So yes the art was amazing I have said it before and will say it again I hope Williamson doesn't just focus on creating other characters and making them relate to batman because that's what Tynion's arc felt like, specially after the joker war. It felt lik e batman was a side character in a book named "The Batman". Lastly, I am seriously hoping for a Batman and Robin team up again like the Morrison and Tomasi's run. more

Coming off an unbelievably fantastic run of batman expertly written by James tynion I was very interested to see where Joshua Williamson would take the dark knight. I was very pleased with the results as this was a very good first issue. The artwork was incredible!!! This might be one of the best looking books I've ever seen!

After 1,5 years of boring and forced stories since joker war by Tynion, when it was announced that Williamson is the new Batman writer, I was super hyped, since every book he wrote in the past 3-4 years was great. A new chapter begins, he concludes Tynion's run and start a brand new plot, and it felt natural, Williamson's writing is great and fits well with the book, the return of Batman Inc. is interesting. Jorge Molina's art with Tomeu Morey colors is damn good, everything in this issue was excellent, finally I'm excited to read Batman again

Great pallet cleanser after Fear State. Really like the Batman Inc costume and was glad to see it back. Also enjoyed the twist of who is backing the Club of Heroes now. There were couple cool Easter Eggs, too: -Joker cosplayer assassin mentioning Batman’s toys, a callback to Batman 89 -Batman disguising himself as Croc, a callback to the B:TAS ep “Almost Got ‘Im†Probably some others I missed.

I'm telling you really, it feels good! Frankly, it's a complete break from the Tynion era and I much prefer this new launch. Tynion's run was too obscure, too meta-intellectual. It spoke too much, it explained too much, and Batman had become a draw. Always a train behind, spectator in his own story. Stop and thank you to Williamson and his team for this clever reboot that doesn't take anything away from what happened (have to do with it) but hastens to put all this unnecessary mess in the closet. Farewell Ghost maker and Clownmachin, and long live Batman. I like the exchanges with Oracle, I like its melancholy, I like its confrontation with zeros during the "evening". and I love the idea of him going to investigate Batman's Incorporation an d I love the masterful entry of (for you to read) Very Good story. more

This was a really great start with some strong writing and incredibly engaging visuals from the team of Williamson and Molina. As a huge fan of Grant Morrison's Batman run, it warms my heart to see Bruce back in the Batman Inc. suit, and with a mystery set up around the old team to boot. From the first page, with Gotham city depicted in a moment of celebration, sucked me in. It was really nice to see as a contrast to the endless destruction and various wars it's gone through in the last 50 issues under King and Tynion. It felt fresh and almost immediately had me on board. The pacing as the mystery around Abyss presents itself was also perfect and the benefactor reveal at the end sets up an intriguing hook going forward, while working well within current continuity, as Bruce has lost his fortune. Overall, I think this is my favorite start to a Batman run since Snyder and Capullo launched the title in the New 52 by bringing the Court of Owls into the fold. more

Rock solid issue. I wasn't sure i was gonna continue this run, not because of the last run which I actually liked, but simply because I didn't know if I needed to. But the art won me over and I'm glad that I got this. I'm interested in what the story will be, and the art again is phenomenal. Really strong looking stuff. Recommend picking this up.

Well, I can safely say Williamson's off to a good start. I just hope he prefers to stick with stories like this and not one long story that only continues into another long story, which seems to be a fad in modern comics. This story got off to an amusing start with the Billionaires' club and their easy target party. Those idiots were lucky the only real villain to show up was the Firefly (In a way better costume than what I've seen him in over the last several years). Williamson also put in some remarks for fans to recognize, like Joker's reference to "those wonderful toys" and Batman disguised as Croc. It shows he's an actual fan. I hope he remembers to keep giving us good stuff to read and always puts that before making a name for himsel f as "The writer who..." that's what really got to King and Tynion's heads. I also want to thank Williamson for getting Ghost Maker and Clownhunter out of Gotham. No all we have to do is make sure they stay out.... Molina's terrific art also contributed to the high score this book has earned. If this keeps up I'd say we have a great writer/art team to look forward to. But they're off to a great start. This is the best this book has been in a while, so let's keep it going smoothly and give us a break from all the longer than they had to be stories of King and Tynion and I'm sure these guys will go far. more

If I'm being honest... I liked this. First of all, Molina's art is wonderful. On par with Jimenez? Maybe. And second of all? Well, it feels natural continuation to Tynion's Batman, which I was surprised with. This isn't just a brand new chapter, it feels like a true epilogue to Tynion's run and a prologue to Williamson's take on the Caped Crusader. The plot progresses naturally and has some interesting twists left here. I'm actually intrigued what Batman book will offer. I haven't felt like this on a Batman run after "Their Dark Designs" which was like 1,5 years ago. But there isn't a lot that happens here. As I said, this book is an epilogue and a prologue at the same time, so you might feel that there was very little here. It doesn't bother me, but I can understand if it bothers someone else. So, Williamson, you got me interested. Don't go all-Tynion on me and make this run boring. Because right now, Batman should be anything but boring. more

Even though I liked Tynion's Batman, I think Joshua Williamson will be better than Batman. It focuses more on Batman and Batman leaves Gotham, which is actually good because it doesnt have the same story of Gotham City being destroyed by villains. I am so far enjoying a lot of Batman content. Keep it up DC Comics and Joshua Williamson!
-
8.5
The things i liked the most were the more comedic and lighthearted moments and judging by this first issue I guess that's what Williamson is going to try to do with the book. The party, Batman Inc, Batman giving autographs, people loving Batman are all evidence for that. You know, It's been a while since Batman's been that way and it's certainly refreshing after the darkness and depression of the recent runs. Ofc Williamson does not go extreme and the issue still feels like an issue of Batman. The change of tone also comes quite naturally from the story itself and from that that now people love batman. Bruce is clearly not used to that, which creates an interesting dynamic. The twist in the end was good and really exciting.

This book was simply a great Batman book. I really enjoyed the setup in the issue for where this run wants to go, I really enjoyed the two small time criminals at the start. And my good lord can Molina draw Gotham and Batman, the fireworks in the background of his first Batman page almost seemed like a celebration of finally getting to draw Batman in Gotham for the first time. The art is just breath taking, and worth the read for the billionaires ball scene alone. The only thing keeping this from being a 10 is no Alfred, no Batman book will ever get a 10 until he's back to me. The story was fun and interesting, I'm always down for a new Gillian but I really loved how they have this one set in the past and brought in a good my stery. We haven't had some good detective work lately. I really hope this is a good long run if this is what we are getting. Like if he keeps writing this and robin this good, give this man the keys to Gotham and let him play as long as he wants. I haven't enjoyed a Batman book outside black label stuff this much since Snyder. I don't care how dc does it but we need Alfred back and Bruce Wayne's fortune aswell. more

I am a bit conflicted about this. I don't enjoy seeing Batman kicked out of Gotham for nothing, so that kills a lot of the joy I should get from a Batman book from the start. On the other hand, at least Tynion's out so that's a huge plus. So was this good? It was good. It was good seeing Batman being Batman again, and not just a tool to make stupid "original" characters look better so the writer gets some sweet money in the future in case they end up in a tv show. Also, I liked how Williamson showed Bruce's vulnerability without slapping you in the face with it. The art is very good, and the last two pages are electric. It did have some faults however. For one, I have no idea how Batman puts on a Killer Croc suit so fast and Josh doesn't bother to explain us. I really didn't need another stupid billionaire line which was also a lie, as in Bruce definitely attended to many such galas, usually to HELP PEOPLE. Because that's who Bruce Wayne is. And I would have liked to know more about Abyss, to see if there's something there with his character. All in all, normally I would have given this 7.5 but I missed Batman so much that I was much more lenient with the rating. Let's hope this gets even better from here! P.S.: I also urge anyone to go to George Perez' facebook page and wish him whatever you feel you have to wish, awful news indeed, the man is a treasure to the comic book community! more

Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Its good to have a writer that actually likes the character. I don't like the house cleaning Willuamsin had to do for Tynion but I get it. I love the idea of Batman and Luthir matching wits again. Bringing Alfred back would be a crowd pleaser too.
Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021And get the Wayne fortune back from Lucius and stop having. Him be a heel.
Merlyn - Dec 7, 2021From his interviews, I think Batman won't come back to Gotham for a long time. I don't know if that's up to him but he doesn't seem bothered by it. That's a problem, for me. I liked this but it had some flaws, Quinn pointed out some of them. I hope it gets better, for an opener it was good.
Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Unfortunately getting Bruce out of Gotham was Tynions shitty idea from early on and Williamson has said he consulted with him before he took over with this issue. One positive seems to be hes cutting Tynions origunal characters loose sooner than later.
Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Hes doing some upcoming back ups as well which will have Alfred and Gordon in retrospective stories but I get the impression Williamson knows their value to Batman. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and start back to in continuity with this book.
Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Tamaki on the other hand needs a radical improvement and cutting Future Stare loose from Tec before I consider that book again.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 8, 2021That would be nice, bringing Batman back to Gotham, Joshua may not be the best writer ever, but to my mind I think he tries to respect canon a bit and doesn't go around with nonsensical inclusions or mediocre villains. to seek to make them a separate series. (You know from the copyrights and royalties like Taylor does), he is giving back his prominence and that's great.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 8, 2021uf Tamaki is very fickle for her writing I don't like it at all. On the one hand I appreciate that Red Hood does not have a series, the way they are destroying the characters. Just imagining Tamaki or Taylor taking over the show, it would be to die for. They would inevitably kill the character.

I had completely scrapped this series, hated it so much to the degree that I didn't even read it for free, just like most DC series. But I said why not? Let's take a look. A good start, we finally have a Batman book where the main character is Batman and not a bunch of random villains. It has been a good change of writer for the moment, we will see what he does later. And if things improve, maybe I will buy this series again.

Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Willuamson had to do some house cleaning for Tynion with this opening issue. I'm crossing my fingers that he dumps Tynions chatacters fast. What I'd love to see is Alfred back and Wayne's money returned. But I always love when Wayne and Luthor match wits.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 7, 2021He's going to have to go to great lengths to clean up the mess, at least his villain looks much more interesting than the ones Tynion insists on presenting. I am glad that people are receiving this in a pleasant way. I don't want to get too excited about it as we know DC's reluctance to bring out Batman, put Tim Fox on the mantle in Gotham, or do a battle for the cowl.
Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021So far DC has blinked fenix. They're moving Tim Fox to New York away from Gotham. I have read that Williamson s plan is not to keep Batman out of Gotham for too long. It's too early to tell anything of course but Williamson so far is saying the right things.
Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Unless Tamaki has a huge rise in quality the only in continuity batbook I ll be buying is this one. It ll be the first time I'm buying in continuity batman since King crapped all over the book. Tynion just plain hates the character.
SenpaifenixJäger - Dec 8, 2021I will see how it progresses, I think I will wait for the next number to invest here.

First new Batman issue I have read in a while and I’m pleasantly surprised. To be honest, I initially only bought this for the beautiful homage cover by Viktor Bogdanovic but was still curious about where Williamson would take the book after Tynion. This felt refreshing after the mess that was the end of King’s run and the blandness of Tynion’s run. Williamson crafts a fairly straightforward Batman story and with very solid art from Jorge Molina. That said, I’m not really interested in any more new Batman villains / characters. Overall, it’s worth checking out but not blowing my socks off. I’ll probably just trade wait for now.

I'm very torn on this comic. I love the idea that Joshua Williamson is trying to dust off ideas from Grant Morrison's Batman Incorporated. I just wish that Williamson had actually read Morrison's Batman run beforehand. This story feels as though he'd just glossed over a Wikipedia page, and it's kind of insulting. Heading into HEAVY spoilers back from Grant Morrison's Batman run! This story mentions that the members of Batman Incorporated had formerly been members of the Club of Heroes. But only two of the five Batman Inc members within this story were actually in John Mayhew's Club of Heroes. El Gaucho and Man-Of-Bats. And how can you have Man-Of-Bats in any story without any mention at all of his son/sidekick 'Raven Red'? The Dar k Ranger that was in the Club of Heroes died on John Mayhew's Island. His former sidekick scout took on the mantle as Dark Ranger. I seem to remember at some point that the original Dark Ranger not inviting his sidekick to the Club of Heroes meeting, as he was afraid his sidekick was going to steal his thunder. Hood didn't show up into Batman Incorporated until issue #5. He was sent in by Spyral to infiltrate Batman's team as a double agent. Now one of my biggest issues. The Batman of China. There was no Batman of China. It was Jiro Osamu, the Batman of Japan. The name Jiro paying tribute to Jiro Kuwata, who had wrote and illustrated the BatManga. And Jiro didn't join the team the team until Batman Inc either. Mixing up China for Japan (especially when it's a homage to the Manga), I'm honestly at a loss for words. So this story definitely has some glaring flaws with it's use for Batman Incorporated. Aside from that, the story itself is ok. I wasn't exactly blown away by the intro before we'd gotten into Grant Morrison territory. There was a party where everyone was dressed up as Gotham's villains. Some criminals decide to crash the party also dressed as Batman rogues. Batman shows up to stop their plans, and the party guests all thin it's part of a performance. Neat idea. Some of the dialogue is a bit childish. "WE DON'T WANT NO BATMAN BEAT-UP, PLEASE!" I dunno. maybe that's the tone that Williamson is going for? The art is really nice. better than your typical comic these days. The color also compliments the art very well. This is a very pretty comic. The story is just ok. But if this wasn't reprising ideas from Grant Morrison's Batman run, I doubt I'd even be giving this a second glance. more

Psycamorean - Jan 2, 2022I don't think Williamson mixed up China and Japan, I just think he decided to use the Bat-Man of China from the New Super-Man series from Rebirth.
myconius - Feb 10, 2022but Williamson had referenced Batman of China as being one of the men formerly of Batman Inc, as well as The Club of Heroes. Batman of China was never actually in either team. he should have at least had Bruce say that he'd never worked with him before. it's this lack of care with details that makes this story feel phoned in.

I rate this a 5, neither good - neither bad. The issue has Gotham celebrating the end of Simon the Pieman, but apparently the mayor who made it all possible and let it happen is still in office. This shows me that the new status quo is still based on a stupid idea. The mayor hates Batman and suffers no consequences for allowing a fascist to take over the city. We see people celebrating the end of fear state and Babs tells Batman to not get all broody. There is a billionaire party and Batman crashes and fights his "villains" in front of a crowd of people. Apparently it's a ruse and people just want to get pictures of Batman. The villains are of no consequence. There is even a little girl dressed as Harley clone girl. The whole thing strik es me as supremely stupid. Babs erases all the cell phone shots before they are posted online. Good thing no one uses film anymore. Then Bruce sees that his Batman Inc. proxies are arrested for murder. I never liked the Batman inc. thing. At best they were insulting stereotypes from a different era - the 1950s, when "things were different in those days." At worst they are racist depictions of stereotypes that Morrison and DC should really have known better not to publish 60 years after they were created in a "different time." Bruce leaves Gotham and investigates in the fake country. It turns out that the Batman Incs did the crime. It's pointed out that Bruce Wayne is broke so who funds them now? Turn out it's Lex Luthor - Dun, dun DUUNN!!!! (Say what you will about Luthor, despite all his losses to the heroes, he's kept his fortune and stayed out of jail. That's more than Bruce can say.) What this issue doesn't do is tell us what all the other Bat allies are doing. Writers keep forgetting that Gotham is filled with Bat kids. That's what makes it so difficult to write Batman stories when continuity is really emphasized. Morrison says it all happened so we get a racist Native American Buffalo Batman brought back from like three issues in the 1950s, but they don't bother to explain what happened to the Batgirls, Robins and Nightwings who have their own books and appeared in the last issue. Very frustrating. Now dealing with the Batman Inc. heroes just seems like going back to a bad idea that makes no sense in our more modern story-telling times. Also Batman is supposed to be broke. How did he have a Batwing to fly overseas? Saying he's broke but showing that being broke does nothing to hinder him in anyway just shows how bankrupt the whole idea is. Either do something with broke or just return his fortune. What they're doing how is the worst of both worlds. It's too early make a fair judgement on Williamson's new story line, but since when have I been fair? Honestly, I suspect DC's next big event will have yet again another reset of the universe and some of the bad ideas that have taken hold in this iteration of DC will be erased, including Batman is broke. It's a guess. I could be wrong. But I am not optimistic about the next arc. more

Mingthemerciless - Dec 7, 2021Tamaki will handle Gotham without Bruce in Tec I believe. Recently Williamson said the plan is to have Batman operate outside Gotham for a short time. Even though Williamson consulted with Tynion Snyder and King about Batman it's clear hes got a better grasp on the character.
Quinn - Dec 7, 2021Oh, I got the point. It’s a stupid point is what I am saying. The whole Batman Inc. is as silly as the Adam West tv show, but with racist stereotypes. That’s my point. Or I could be wrong.
