Regardless of your feelings about Tynion's previous run on Batman or Williamson's run on The Flash, I urge you to check out. Batman #118 clearly shows that Williamson understands the character and bodes well for the title for however long he remains as the writer. Read Full Review

Batman #118 is a fantastic start to a new era for Batman, likely to appeal to fans both new and old. Batman himself is well-characterized, with a portrayal that veers more toward the classic detective model than the action-horror hero of the previous run, but without a jarring tonal shift that might be off-putting for current readers. The artwork is beautiful, but honestly, Im not sure Ill ever be able to get past that one page without wincing. Read Full Review

It may feel like a step back in intensity from past runs, but I think that's by design. Williamson is an expert at building a run from the ground up. Read Full Review

This issue very much feels like a return to form for the main Bat-title. It keeps its focus on Batman, gives us some classic action beats, and sets up the next direction. For me, this serves as a promising jumping on point. It's direct, engaging, and recaptures what a Batman title should be. Read Full Review

This is the first new issue of Batman I've read in almost a year, and I am not kidding when I say it's the best time I've had with this title in a long, long time. Williamson doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, or even try to force changes that are meant to leave his creative mark on the character, but only end up diminishing Batman as a result. No, this is a grand adventure, meant to entertain and respect Batman's role as Gotham's protector, and have a good time doing it. Read Full Review

This creative team had a lot to live up to. Not only did they jump in enthusiastically, they honored the previous run and set a course for an interesting new future. The mystery is interesting, the art is great, and I'm excited to see what they have planned for us. Read Full Review

Readers looking to be wowed right out of the gate with Joshua Williamson's Batman run start may have to wait a bit.  This was a solid but safe issue that spends time transitioning out of James Tynion's run before getting interesting by the end.  The entire issue looks fantastic, and the cliffhanger alone makes it worth reading. Batman #118 ushers in a new creative team, a mystery for Batman outside of Gotham City, and, once he touches down in Badhnisia, a change into the Batman, Inc. costume for our Caped Crusader. I've got to say I'm happy to have the Bat-Symbol back on our hero, but the lack of trunks (plus the unnecessary seams) means we still are denied Batman's classic look as DC seems incapable of providing more than half of a good costume for our hero. As for the mystery, it seems Batman may have an ally (of sorts) in… Lex Luthor? Read Full Review
