Well that's it for me, guess I'm dropping this title.
Scott Synder is moving like a bulldozer, rewriting Batman like a horror show. And yes, there is supposed to be some reinvention with the absolute titles but to me he goes way too far...and nowhere interesting. I was curious about what he would make of Batman's rogue gallery and now that I've seen their treatment without any ounce of fines more

But I guess I was never going to love this issue because I think the premise that Batman and all of his major rogues were childhood friends is dumb and a poor storytelling shortcut that I look past every time I read this book. And it was front and center this time.

It seems that ever since Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder finished their Batman runs, every writer starts off strong but in the end falls flat. Tom King's run started off strong with his first arcs (The I am Trilogy) but then falls flat at City of Bane. The court of owls for me was such a creeping, well build experience, while city of owls felt disjoined, at times rushed and it was almost like skipping chapters for me personally. I liked the message. It made a great thesis for the whole run, but even that felt weird in its delivery as the ending was such a departure of what i liked previously.

Hex - Sep 14, 2025

Yes he was but in regards to the N52 being a semi-reboot and it being so far removed from that Silver Age incarnation, it felt fresh. I had also just seen Crisis on Two Earths with Owl Man as Thomas Wayne Jr. so that helped at the time.

Solid start. Beautiful art. The story doesn't give us a whole lot in terms of direction as there really isn't a villain present. It'll likely be a commentary on the current militarization of the police and extra-policing forces that have been deployed. Poignant. I'm for it. Levity exactly. Seeing him being a hero to people. Simple but beautiful to see. Particularly after how cold Zdarsky Bats was to civilians. I.e - hardly even acknowledging them. What is a super hero without them? No hero at all. The most negative critic wrote - "Batman written as a cynical, jaded loner."

daspidaboy - Sep 3, 2025

I think what I like about Matt Fraction's Batman is that it's looking to the future. It seems that DC or Matt Fration at least knows that readers are tired of Gotham City being taken over by villains (City of Bane, Joker War, Fear State, Shadow War), Bruce Wayne having a mental breakdown and pushes his friends and allies away. I hope for the future issues, Matt Fraction is just having Bruce go back to basics with solving mysteries instead of focusing on spectacle. Which I do have higher hopes.

Too early to say anything definitive. But I have worries. One of the reasons Robin was created was to give Batman someone to talk to. Now Bats has an AI holographic Alfred. That doesn’t strike me as mentally healthy, especially considering the fact that there are 174,964 Bat family members Bruce can talk with.

This better not be another arc where Bats learns the value of family. Just more

Goghfacekilla, I read other reviews and they stated Alf was an ai, but some said he was in Bruce’s mind. Either way, not healthy mentally, so I think my point stands. Thanks for keeping me honest. There are a lot of people Bruce can actually talk to. That is the trap of the Bat family. We love the characters, but we love “loner” Bats. But remember, Robin was introduced within a year of Batman. The always a loner thing is a myth. But let’s see where this is going.

Quinn, you review and assessments were a lot more fun to read than the actual issue itself! 😂 ....I agree with many of your points. Especially the part about Batman "getting rebooted to a tired status quo that leaves out charm, fun, and originality." ...I honestly could not have said it better!

The meta approach is very well done. We may not be getting a deconstruction of Batman, but we will get a story about if a man can change. Especially if that man is a fictional character that can’t really change.
